Swine flu advice for Liverpool parents after 11th victim in region named

MERSEYSIDE health chiefs issued advice to parents worried about swine flu last night, as the known death toll reached 11 in the region.

Parents have expressed concern after the death of Birmingham three-year-old Lana Ameen, a perfectly healthy child not eligible for the vaccine.

But health bosses claimed expert advice categorically said only children with health problems should be vaccinated.

It comes as the Daily Post was made aware of an 11th swine flu death in the region.

Eleanor Carruthers, 68, from Wavertree, had been given the flu jab, but still died from the disease.

14 treated for swine flu in Western Trust

Fourteen people are being treated for swine flu by the Western Trust, the Public Health Agency has revealed.

An additional 20 people are waiting to find out of they have the virus.

The PHA also confirmed that 17 people - including two with no underlying health conditions - have died from swine flu in Northern Ireland since November.

Dr Anne Kilgannon from the Western Trust said Altnagelvin was busier than most hospitals over Christmas, but staff were coping well.

"Although the numbers are small we have been busier than in other hospitals in Northern Ireland.

"However I think it's important to say we have coped well.

"We had predetermined plans in place and our staff have implemented those."

School pupil, 4, is latest victim of swine flu in acounty

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD child who contracted swine flu in hospital after being admitted with pneumonia is recovering at home.

The youngster, who is a pupil at Werrington Primary School, was taken ill at the beginning of December and spent Christmas in hospital.

Headteacher Nicola Walker sent out a letter to parents earlier this week to scotch rumours a case of swine flu had been reported at the school.

Mrs Walker stated: "On December 9 one of our nursery pupils was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and unfortunately remained in hospital throughout the Christmas period.

"While in hospital the pupil then contracted swine flu. The pupil has recently been discharged from hospital and is now recovering at home.

"I did not feel it was appropriate for me to write to parents as the pupil in question had not been on the school site immediately prior to contracting swine flu or during the period in which they were ill and so posed no risk to the other pupils."

Parent Danielle Edwards, aged 30, of Leek, has just recovered from swine flu.

Family?s agony at dad?s suspected swine flu death

A HEALTHY father-ofthree has died of suspected swine flu.

Chef Stephen Hall, aged 45, from Westhoughton, died at the Royal Bolton Hospital on Saturday.

His wife Lynda described him as ?a gentle, kind and caring man? and said she cannot believe what has happened.

Mrs Hall, aged 46, said: ?It?s just so unfair. He was a big, strong, healthy man.

He never smoked and didn?t drink, apart from the odd tipple, he never had any problems. I just keep thinking it?s a dream and I?m going to wake up.?

Mr Hall began to feel unwell the week before Christmas but insisted on fulfilling his duties as head chef at The Dressers Arms in Wheelton, Chorley.

Broadcast singer hospitalised with serious illness

Broadcast frontwoman Trish Keenan is reportedly "fighting for her life" in hospital. A co-founder of the British art-pop band, Keenan will reportedly undergo surgery after contracting H1N1 and pneumonia.

News of Keenan's illness first appeared on Broadcast's Facebook page, in a post (since removed) by Crystal Summers, who claims to be Keenan's sister. "I'm sorry everyone but I have some bad news," she wrote (via Pitchfork). "Trish Keenan is fighting for her life in hospital." After touring Australia in December, Keenan contracted the H1N1 flu, Summers said. The singer has been on a life support machine since Christmas. "She won't be singing for some time as she has to have a tube that the doctors put in her throat," Summers said. "She will have to have surgery and she won't be able to get any infections in the wound."

Broadcast's label, Warp Records, confirmed Keenan's illness to Pitchfork. "Trish is in hospital and very ill with pneumonia. At this time, please respect the privacy of the band and the family and when there is any more news [Manager] Martin [Pike] will be sure to update fans."

Broadcast's most recent album, a collaboration with the Focus Group, was released in 2009.

UK Fatality Sequences Relate to US and Iran

UK Fatality Sequences Relate to US and Iran

The <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">US CDC</span></strong> today released a small set of sequences at GISAID spanning June to November 2010. As the UK Severe Wave is the current topic of interest, we have profiled 6 of these sequences from today against the UK Fatality Sequences that have been published.  Five of the sequences are <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">from the United States</span></strong> and one is from Bangladesh.

Previously, the UK HPA released a small group of sequences in two deposits at GISAID related to the present severe wave filling the ICU wards in the UK. A concurrent paper <strong><span style="color: red;">1</span></strong> was published in early January with a phylogenetic tree. <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">Several of the fatalities</span></strong> noted on the HPA Ellis Figure3 <strong><span style="color: red;">1</span></strong> phylogenetic tree have been included in the two sequence deposits.

So that focus may occur at the clinical outcomes of highest priority, <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">GeneWurx</span></strong> has prepared a fresh <a href="http://genewurx.com/data/GeneWurx_Global_Spread_of_Divergence_UK_US_Iran_v0.JPG" target="_blank">phylogenetic tree</a> with annotation in progress that may prove useful to those investigating the <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">ongoing divergency</span></strong> within this <strong><span style="color: #660000;">zoonoticly active</span></strong> <strong><span style="color: #4c1130;">pH1N1</span></strong> <a href="http://pf11.blogspot.com/2011/01/uk-and-iran-transmit-hyper-zoonotic.html" target="_blank">viral reservoir</a>.  UK Fatalities, UK Severe cases (<strong><span style="color: blue;">225G</span></strong>), UK potential Vaccine Escape cases (<strong><span style="color: blue;">158E, 159K</span></strong>) and cases from the US, Australia, Iran and Bangladesh are profiled.

<strong><a href="http://genewurx.com/data/GeneWurx_Global_Spread_of_Divergence_UK_US_Iran_v0.JPG" target="_blank">GeneWurx_Global_Spread_of_Divergence_UK_US_Iran_v0.jpg</a></strong>

The <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">GeneWurx</span></strong> annotation for the full HPA Ellis Figure3 <strong><span style="color: red;">1</span></strong> has been recently revised and <a href="http://genewurx.com/data/GeneWurx_UK_December_Emerging_Genetics_v5.xls" target="_blank">Version 5</a> of the Emerging Genetics spreadsheet is available with several additions including two of the recent US sequences of interest and the Bangladeshi sequence.

A pattern that has been expected is demonstrated in <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">Kentucky09_40F_2010_11_01</span></strong> with <strong><span style="color: blue;">158E, 188T</span></strong> and <strong><span style="color: blue;">225G</span></strong> on a similar background as the <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">OzBrisbane209_51F_2010_08_09</span></strong> <a href="http://pf11.blogspot.com/2010/12/ha-225g-paired-with-188t-in-diverse.html">sequence</a> carrying <strong><span style="color: blue;">156E, 188T</span></strong> and <strong><span style="color: blue;">225G</span></strong>.  Though these two sequences share extensive homology, the tree and polymorphism details will show that <strong><span style="color: #783f04;">overall the reservoir is diversifying</span></strong> and creating <strong><span style="color: #660000;">branches with minimal leaf count</span></strong> by acquiring and recombining <strong><span style="color: #660000;">rare and novel</span></strong> polymorphisms also found in <strong><span style="color: #660000;">animal reservoirs</span></strong>.

Swine flu mother tells of battle to survive

A new mother who nearly died from swine flu and needed an emergency caesarean to save her baby has urged all pregnant women to get vaccinated.

Lynsey Frew, 29, from Rigside in Lanark, fell ill on Boxing Day with flu-like symptoms when she was eight months pregnant.

Her condition deteriorated and on Hogmanay she was rushed by ambulance to Wishaw General.

By late on New Year's Day, however, she could no longer breathe for herself.

Hours later, staff at the hospital performed an emergency caesarean operation to save her unborn daughter.

Sarah Frew Lane was born seven weeks early and taken to the neonatal unit.

Meanwhile, Ms Frew began her battle for survival in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The student nurse, who attends the University of the West of Scotland, said she was certain she would die without meeting her child.

Influenza - Update 125

14 January 2011

(...)

Summary:

(...)

In the United Kingdom, severe and fatal cases are increased compared to 2 weeks ago, associated predominantly with influenza A (H1N1) 2009 and less commonly with influenza type B.

Currently, 25% of intensive care beds in the U.K. are occupied by influenza patients.

Europe:

The United Kingdom (U.K.) continues to report high rates of ILI and influenza-related hospitalizations.

Currently approximately 25% of intensive care beds are occupied by influenza cases and 112 influenza-related deaths have been reported.

95 of 100 fatal cases from which the virus has been sub-typed have been H1N1 (2009) related and the other 5, influenza type B.

The majority of severe and fatal cases have been between the ages of 15 and 64 years; only 16% of fatal cases were over the age of 64 years.

Of note, the Chief Medical Officer of the U.K. has issued an alert to clinicians noting recent increases in some bacterial infections that are sometimes seen as co-infections with influenza, particularly S. pneumoniae, invasive Group A streptococcus, and meningococcal disease.

The association of this increase with the current influenza transmission is unclear and is under investigation.

2% Oseltamivir resistance is a point of evaluation and may provide the spark for spread depending on regionality and sub-clinical usage policies.

Two children with swine flu die

Two young children with swine flu have died in Northern Ireland.

The death of a 10-month-old baby boy was announced just hours after the authorities said a two-year-old boy with the virus had died.

The baby had underlying health problems.

It is not known if the two-year-old, who was from the Republic of Ireland, was also suffering from another condition as his family have asked for those details to remain private.

The death takes to 19 the confirmed number of people with the H1N1 virus who have died in Northern Ireland this flu season.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey expressed his sympathies to the family of the latest young victim, who was from Northern Ireland.

"This is tragic news and my thoughts and sympathies are with the family of this baby at this very sad and difficult time," he said.

The minister had earlier passed his condolences to the family of the two-year-old boy.

The fatalities will put further pressure on the authorities to re-think the policy decision not to vaccinate all under-fives against the virus, something which was done last year. Only infants in 'at-risk' health categories are being vaccinated.

But after the death of the two-year-old was announced, Mr McGimpsey said medical advisers remained of the opinion that the vaccination programme should not be extended
