Moratuwa On The Brink Of Dengue Epidemic

Most of the drains in the Ratmalana area are clogged causing severe health hazards to the resident of the area and dragging the entire area to yet another major dengue epidemic. While residents in the area complain that the employees of the Moratuwa Municipal Council (MMC) assigned to clean the drains do not perform their duty properly, the MMC is on the view that the residents are responsible for most of the clogged drains.
According to the website of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health Sri Lanka, during the last two months, 6104 Dengue suspected cases were reported to the Epidemiology Unit from all over the Island ? of which about 59.92% cases were reported from the Western Province.

10 deaths, 6,600 dengue cases from Jan to March

Health Ministry has declared a National Mosquito control week from today (2) to April 8 following an increase in the number of cases and deaths during the first three months this year.

According to the Ministry, 10 confirmed deaths have been reported and 6,627 cases have been reported from January to March island wide.

Today(2) will be the educational institutions inspection day with all government and private educational institutions, university and higher education institutions, hostels and private classes will be inspected.

In keeping with World Health Day on Monday, 7 April and the National Mosquito Control Week, which was facilitated by the Ministry of Health from 2 to 8 April, many projects carried out by various organizations focused on eradicating and raising awareness on dengue. Ceylon Today and Mawbima took a ground breaking step in working towards dengue prevention and awareness by having the ink used on the newspapers of 7 April infused with natural citronella oil.


Supported by Leo Burnett Solutions, every letter printed contained the soft smell of citronella oil, which helps protect homes and offices from mosquitoes. This is the first time that an initiative of this calibre has been taken by a newspaper publication, revolutionizing and transforming dengue awareness into direct prevention.


"There are two aspects of this; one aspect is the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aspect. We all believe dengue is one of the biggest issues in Sri Lanka, which has caused a lot of damage, so, as a responsible newspaper, we thought we would do something to create awareness to eradicate dengue from Sri Lanka," explains Saranga Wijeyarathne, Director, Marketing at Ceylon Newspapers Limited. "The second one is the innovative aspect of it. Ceylon Today and Mawbima are leading innovators in print media, and we have come up with many award-winning innovations, both internationally and locally, in the last two-and-a-half years. Dengue forces closure of three schools

The Homagama Zonal Education Office today announced the closure of three schools in the Seethaawaka Divisional Secretariat Division for three days as a result of a Dengue outbreak in the area.

Homagama Zonal Education Director P.D. Werasooriya said the schools closed were -- Hanwella Rajasinghe Central College; Pahathgama Roman Catholic College and the Hanwella Mayadunne College.

No 'dengue shut down' of schools

Health Ministry officials have not issued orders to close down any schools due to dengue. Ministry officials recently ordered all school authorities to clean school premises well before the commencement of schools after the New Year vacation, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, a school at Hanwella was closed for one day by the school's Principal because he had failed to clean the school premises before the commencement of the new school term yesterday after the New Year vacation. "Only this school was closed for one day and no school was closed due to dengue," the spokesman said.

Dengue eradication starts in Hanwella schools

Dengue eradication commenced in five schools in Hanwella which were closed yesterday (April 21) due to the mosquito threat. The schools were closed yesterday, the first day of the second school term, after parents, past pupils associations and teachers demanded principals of Rajasinghe Central College, Roman Catholic secondary school, Pahathgama, Mayadunna Maha Vidyalaya, Hanwella, Maliyadewa Maha Vidyalaya, Hanwella and Hanwella Kanishta Vidyalaya to close down the schools.

More than 2/3 of dengue victims under 20

The Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council yesterday revealed that approximately 70 percent of those who were affected by dengue in the city were below the age of 20.

Addressing a press conference at the Town Hall to announce the special dengue control campaign which is scheduled to commence from Kirulapona and Pamankade wards today (03), Chief of the Municipal Public Health Department, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said that the total number of suspected dengue cases this year were over 900 - which was 10 percent less than last year.

Although there was a slight increase at the beginning of the year (420) there had been a decline to 134 cases in March. However the number of cases again increased to 145 in April.

Denied timely hospital care, child dies of dengue

A 14 -year-old student of Maharagama Janadhipathi Vidyalaya, Kawisha Wickremaratne, who was rushed to the Sri Jayewardenepura hospital with dengue on May 5, was refused admission by the two lady doctors attached to its OPD and the child died five days later at a private hospital.

On the advice of a senior physician the student had been admitted to a private hospital, where he died after five days.

Dengue has snuffed out 30 lives so far this year

The Health Ministry yesterday revealed that over 9,939 suspected dengue cases had been recorded in the country so far this year.

Spokesman for the Health Ministry, Dharma Wanninayake said that 52 percent of them were from the Western Province. The dengue death toll within the period had been 30, he said, adding that delays in seeking proper medication had caused those deaths. The number of dengue cases reported from several districts including Ratnapura was on the increase owing to the intermittent rains experienced in several parts of the country.

Killer dengue deals death warrants across the country

Nine-year-old Sanduni Wasana?s life ebbed away on Vesak Poya and 17-year-old Tharindu Maleesha de Alwis?s over a week ago, like three more within this same period, at the Colombo South (Kalubowila) Teaching Hospital.


Dengue which is sweeping the country once again has triumphed and dealt death warrants to 33 across the country up to May 24 this year. Tragically, of these deaths, 12 have been at the Kalubowila Hospital and five at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, amounting to half of the dengue death toll, the Sunday Times learns.

Dengue spread in Western Province ?reaches epidemic proportions?

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health says that the spread of Dengue in the Western Province has reached epidemic proportions.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Paba Palihawadana said the MOH divisions where the disease is spreading rapidly have been identified and eradication programmes have been initiated.

39-year-old Thanuja Nishanthi is one of the latest victims of the Dengue menace.

She was admitted to the Angoda Infectious Disease Hospital hospital on May 20 with a fever , when doctors had diagnosed with her Dengue fever.

Thanuja, who received in house treatment over 10 days, succumbed to the fever Friday morning, orphaning her only daughter, aged 9.
