Drop in Dengue death rate
Nadira Gunatilleke

During the last three months 10,353 dengue cases and 20 deaths were reported from all parts of the country although the dengue death rate has decreased to 0.2 percent, Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala said.

He said 47,000 dengue cases and 97 deaths were reported last year.

Addressing a seminar at the Health Education Bureau yesterday, Dr. Mahipala said in 1990, five in every 100 dengue patients died and this number decreased to one death in 2005.

"Now it is only 0.2 percent. Our target is reducing the dengue death rate to 0.1 percent. The government spends Rs. 400 million annually to manage dengue. Dengue can now be diagnosed in a state hospital within half an hour through a blood test," he said.
