Sri Lanka Dengue 2014

Re: Sri Lanka Dengue 2014

I have been commenting for years in these threads that the officially reported Dengue fatality figure seems to be manipulated lower. Another piece of evidence from today's "Sunday Leader". - Ro

Dengue Spreads Alarmingly
Chaos in Government Hospitals
By Nirmala Kannangara
The health authorities have issued a dengue red alert as the country is facing a dengue epidemic situation after 2009. Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts in the Western Province are the worst affected areas recording the highest number of deaths and suspected cases.
...
Eyebrows have been raised as to why the National Hospital Colombo and the Colombo South Teaching Hospital (Kalubowila) have attempted to hide the number of reported dengue deaths in their respective hospitals.

“Last month alone 17 dengue deaths were reported from Kalubowila Hospital but it is questionable as to why the hospital authorities failed to report the cause of death as dengue. Fifteen patients died in the Kalubowila hospital while two patients died after they were transferred to Lady Ridgway Hospital and to the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital,” reliable sources from the Kalubowila Hospital said.

The sources on condition of anonymity accused the hospital for giving the cause of death as rat fever (Leptospirosis) in death certificates.

“If a dengue patient is managed in the proper way and unless the patient comes to the hospital at the last stages, dengue is a curable disease. There are medicine and various varieties of saline to be given with adequate rest to the patient. But the doctors sometimes mess up and the patients have to pay the ultimate price. That is why they do not want to say that there were dengue deaths in the hospital,” the sources added.

Meanwhile National Hospital sources too confirmed to The Sunday Leader that it is the same at the country’s main hospital. “In most cases the cause of death is given as Leptospirosis which is similar to dengue symptoms.

Antibiotics are given to both illnesses. Although the blood report clearly shows the drop of the platelet count and such patients are suspected for dengue, we are puzzled as to why the cause of death is given as some other disease but not dengue. This is a puzzle amongst us. Is it to hide the statistics or have they mistakenly treated the patient for any other disease other than dengue,” he added.
...
Meanwhile Director National Hospital Dr. Anil Jasinghe said that although there is no dengue unit in the hospital there are high dependency units (HDU) in every ward to give proper treatments.

“We have managed the dengue situation properly and for the first five months there were only five deaths reported and we treated over 450 suspected cases last month. At any given time there are about 40 to 45 patients taking treatment for dengue at the National Hospital. However Dr. Jasinghe refuted the allegations leveled against his hospital for giving different causes of death for those who died of dengue.“We have never done so. We cannot furnish wrong details in the death certificate,” added Dr. Jasinghe.
Meanwhile Director Kalubowila Hospital Dr. Asela Gunawardena too disclaimed the allegation levelled against his hospital and said that it is the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) who conducts the postmortem.

Dengue outbreak - Death rate falls, but patient count rises
By Arthur Wamanan Sunday, 29 June 2014 02:10

Dengue outbreak - Death rate falls, but patient count rises
With the spread of dengue continuing to be rampant in several parts of the country, officials have now called for appropriate research on the reasons for the country’s failure to curb the spread. Despite the rise in the number of dengue cases this year, medical officers say that they have been successful in reducing the number of deaths owing to the disease.

According to experts, dengue is probably the only communicable disease Sri Lanka has failed to control its spread. The disease also results in quite a number of deaths island-wide.
According to the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, 89 deaths were reported due to dengue last year while the number of patients was 16,794. (Comment - the final # of cases for 2013 was over 32,000 with 89 fatalities. By June 28th, 2013 15,777 cases with 50 fatalities had been reported - Ro) Head of the unit, Dr. Paba Palihawadana told The Nation that authorities have been successful in reducing the death toll over the past few years. According to Dr. Palihawadana, 44 deaths have been reported so far this year. (from 17,102 cases - Ro)
However, the issue here is not the reduction in the number of deaths or other statistical details, but the reasons behind the failure of authorities to curb the spread.

A strain of dengue that shows no symptoms.
TUESDAY, 22 MAY 2012 - 19:05 |

The Epidemiology Unit states that the dengue virus has metamorphosed into a more severe state where it does not show initial symptoms.

There are several initial symptoms to identify dengue including high fever, vomiting and body pains.

However at this new second stage of the disease the symptoms do not appear.

Latest testing by the epidemiology unit has found that the disease now skips a stage and moves directly into the dengue shock syndrome.

Dengue campaign re-starts on Thursday

Success growing but officials warn against relaxing vigilance

The dengue prevention campaign headed by the Presidential Task Force will continue on August 7, 8, 18 and 19, particularly focusing on high-risk areas of the Western Province , the Sri Lanka Epidemiological unit said. Senior Consultant Epidemiologist, Dr Hasitha Tissera described this campaign as a ?mop-up of the high-risk areas? and said the team would also focus on other potential dengue mosquito breeding areas.

Army personnel continue their battle against dengue. Pic by Indika Handuwala
The Chief Epidemiologist and Director of the Central Epidemiological Unit, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, Dr Paba Palihawadana, has noted a drop in the number of dengue cases reported throughout the island following the campaigns. ?Currently the threat pertains in the Western Province and other districts such as Kandy, Kurunegala and Ratnapura,? she said.

?There have been about 55 deaths this year and one death was reported last month, so the situation is not bad.?
?Our main objective is to reduce the number of deaths,? said Dengue Control Unit- spokesperson Dr. Nayana de Alwis.
?The hospitals are also flooded with patients during an outbreak and such situations are difficult to manage.?
She said the situation was ?mostly under control? but that the campaign should continue at least until the monsoon period ended.
