Dengue deaths rise to 55
Nadira GUNATILLEKE
Dengue has claimed 55 lives. Nearly 1,500 dengue cases had been reported from all parts of the country during the past five months. The public should be vigilant about dengue mosquito breeding sites common in certain areas, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, a majority of mosquito breeding spots in the Colombo district are located in discarded receptacles.

"The most affected area is the Kalutara district is Walalawita where thousands of acres of godapara trees are located. Dengue mosquitoes breed in the leaves once they fall on to the ground.

The Dengue menace is increasing rapidly.

Sunday, 27 May 2012 12:31
Health Authorities say that the number of Dengue cases reported in the island is increasing due to the prevailing rainy weather. The National Dengue Prevention Unit says many cases have been reported from Colombo, Kalubowila, Gampaha and Negombo hospitals. About 11,600 cases and 53 deaths have been reported so far this year. Director of the Dengue Prevention Unit Dr. Ajith Batuwantudawa says public support is essential to control this situation. He requests public to take immediate actions to eliminate possible dengue mosquito breeding places in their gardens and residing places.

Beware of a blend of dengue and viral fever: Health authorities

The deadly disease could strike with conditions favourable to it coming into play
With the onset of scattered monsoonal rains and high humidity, both ideal for the spread of mosquito-borne diseases and common virus flu/fever, health authorities warn the public to be wary, as a blend of both maladies could have fatal repercussions.

Colombo : A total of 56 people have died in the first five months out of 11,000 cases of dengue fever in Sri Lanka, the health ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry said that from January till May, a total of 11,473 patients were reported with the disease, Xinhua reported.

Comment - The most recent update on the government website is still from May 18th giving 11,403 cases and 53 deaths. The figures alluded to in the report above, if they can be believed, would represent a significant slow down in the spread of dengue in Sri Lanka. Considering the recent onset of the rainy season, I have my doubts about the completeness of these figures. - Ro

Re: Sri Lanka Dengue 2012: 80 fatalities

Latest figures from the MOH (updated 6/15); http://www.epid.gov.lk/web/index.php?option=com_casesanddeaths&Itemid=448&lang=en

12,165 cases and 65 fatalities.

These figures do not reflect the media reported increase in cases and fatalities.
Official case figures are as follows;

Jan: 3,986
Feb: 3,145
Mar: 2,628
Apr: 1,654
May: 467
June to 15th: 285

Some of the more obvious anomalies are;

Gampaha Jan: 847 Feb: 640 Mar:447 Apr: 268 May: 0 Jun: 0 Tot: 2202 Fatalities:10
Kalutara Jan:180 Feb: 260 Mar: 209 Apr:156 May: 0 Jun: 0 Tot:805 Fatalities: 6
Matara Jan: 186 Feb:147 Mar:155 Apr:92 May:0 Jun:0 Tot:580 Fatalities:1

In both 2010 and 2011 each of the regions above showed an increasing trend through the first 7 months with a peak in July.
It is likely that the official report is an undercount.

These new figures represent an increase in cases of 36%. The cfr to June 22nd is .60%, but the cfr using figures since June 22nd is .20%. It's very likely that the figures released by Director Palihawadana are incomplete.
