Dengue deaths rise to 55

Dengue has claimed 55 lives. Nearly 1,500 dengue cases had been reported from all parts of the country during the past five months. The public should be vigilant about dengue mosquito breeding sites common in certain areas, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, a majority of mosquito breeding spots in the Colombo district are located in discarded receptacles.

"The most affected area is the Kalutara district is Walalawita where thousands of acres of godapara trees are located. Dengue mosquitoes breed in the leaves once they fall on to the ground.

Story from the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Company. What the Director does not mention is that the figures are now more than 10 days old as the MOH failed to update this week.

Health Authorities say that the number of Dengue cases reported in the island is increasing due to the prevailing rainy weather. The National Dengue Prevention Unit says many cases have been reported from Colombo, Kalubowila, Gampaha and Negombo hospitals. About 11,600 cases and 53 deaths have been reported so far this year. Director of the Dengue Prevention Unit Dr. Ajith Batuwantudawa says public support is essential to control this situation. He requests public to take immediate actions to eliminate possible dengue mosquito breeding places in their gardens and residing places.

Comment - The most recent update on the government website is still from May 18th giving 11,403 cases and 53 deaths. The figures alluded to in the report above, if they can be believed, would represent a significant slow down in the spread of dengue in Sri Lanka. Considering the recent onset of the rainy season, I have my doubts about the completeness of these figures. - Ro

Sri Lanka concerned over surge in dengue fever

Sri Lanka's ministry of health today alerted the public to the rising figure of dengue mosquito victims.

Dr Palitha Maheepala, a top health ministry official said that there have been 11,795 dengue patients during the first five months of this year.

There were 74 deaths during this period.

Some 76 per cent of the dead have come from the age category of 15 to 50 and above.
24 per cent accounted for in the age category 5 to 15, health officials said.

Seventy four Dengue deaths in five months

The Health Ministry announced that Dengue has claimed 74 lives and 11,795 dengue cases had been reported during the last five and half months in this year.

According to ministry sources, the majority of dengue cases have been reported from the Western Province. Twenty six dengue deaths and 2,976 dengue cases have been reported from Colombo district, 14 deaths and 2,197 dengue cases from the Gampaha district and six deaths and 788 dengue cases have been reported from the Kalutara district.

Twenty four percent out of the total number of deaths are in the 5-15 age group while the balance 76 percent is in the 15-50 and over 50 age groups. Neglect of the disease and delay in treatment have caused danger to a patient's life...

Jun 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health has warned that Dengue has now entered a pandemic stage as the resurgence of the mosquito-borne menace has killed 80 people and affected 14,500 others during the first six months of the year.

A Health Ministry official has told local media that all government hospitals are currently overflowing with dengue patients and it is hazardous to other patients.

The dengue outbreak in the country has developed into a severe epidemic, the Ministry has warned.

Out of the 80 people died, 24 were children between five and 15 years of age.

These figures do not reflect the media reported increase in cases and fatalities.
Official case figures are as follows;

Some of the more obvious anomalies are;

Kalutara Jan:180 Feb: 260 Mar: 209 Apr:156 May: 0 Jun: 0 Tot:805 Fatalities: 6

In both 2010 and 2011 each of the regions above showed an increasing trend through the first 7 months with a peak in July.
It is likely that the official report is an undercount.

Dengue reaching epidemic proportions

The Lady Ridgeway Children?s Hospital is currently packed beyond capacity with dengue patients. The epidemic has spread country wide with over 10000 persons inflicted by the deadly mosquito. The Director of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Dr. Ratansiri A Hewage, has allocated six wards, and six specialists are on duty around the clock to treat the patients.
Despite measures taken by the Health Ministry to combat the spreading menace by directing the school heads to keep the school environment clean, children are the majority in the total of patients diagnosed with dengue.
Latest reports said that at lest 10 ministries have been affected by the epidemic, with a large number of employees diagnosed with dengue. Thirty employees from the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau have contracted dengue, and one has succumbed to the deadly epidemic.

Major Dengue prevention campaign today
Under the instruction of Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa a Dengue Prevention Campaign will be carried out in all Government institutions and Public places today (22nd June).

The programme will be carried out in the Colombo and, Gampaha districts including the Metropolitan area. Accordingly tri forces and police personnel together with public health officials will conduct inspections and cleaning up of identified places and also awareness programmes.

In order to counter the threat of increased mosquito breeding due to the prevailing inclement weather conditions and also to assure the smooth flow of rain water, the military together with the police are involved in this programme.

In addition to the inspection of premises the military personnel will also involve in the clean up activity as well. They will also educate the public on these issues through conducting awareness programmes.

Secretary Defence has taken personnel interest in this project to ensure the well being of the populace of Colombo and its suburbs where there is an increased tendency in the spread of diseases such as dengue. The public is requested to cooperate and assist the officials to maintain proper health standards in their living and working environs.

July 10, Colombo: The Association of Public Health Inspectors of Sri Lanka will launch an island wide strike Tuesday (July 10) to protest the murder of their colleague during a dengue inspection in the Thambalagamuwa area of Kantale in Eastern Province.

The President of the Association Upul Rohana has told local media that all PHIs around the country will not report to work today in protest of the murder.

A 52-year-old Public Health Inspector of Thambalagamuwa, K.M. Falil, a resident of Kinniya, was killed Monday (July 09) by a resident of a house in the Thambalagamuwa area while the officer was inspecting the house premises for dengue mosquito breeding places.

The dengue mosquito is said to be more active from 6am to 10am and from 4pm to 6.30pm and has extended its stinging period to 11pm.

Around 17,000 dengue cases and 85 dengue deaths have been reported from all parts of the country to date, Health Ministry Epidemiology Unit Director Dr Paba Palihawadana said yesterday. Dr Palihawadana said a person suffering from fever for over three days should seek medical treatment as it could be dengue fever.

The latest figures on the government website http://www.epid.gov.lk/web/index.php?option=com_casesanddeaths&Itemid=448&lang=en are from June 22nd;
12,454 cases and 75 fatalities. (which I felt was an undercount - see earlier in this thread).

These new figures represent an increase in cases of 36%. The cfr to June 22nd is .60%, but the cfr using figures since June 22nd is .20%. It's very likely that the figures released by Director Palihawadana are incomplete.
