Dengue has claimed 76 lives so far this year out of 15, 000 people affected, the Epidemiology Unit said. The health authorities have alerted of a possible dengue epidemic situation as there has been a significant increase in the number of cases.

Dengue reaching epidemic proportions

The Lady Ridgeway Children?s Hospital is currently packed beyond capacity with dengue patients. The epidemic has spread country wide with over 10000 persons inflicted by the deadly mosquito. The Director of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Dr. Ratansiri A Hewage, has allocated six wards, and six specialists are on duty around the clock to treat the patients.
Despite measures taken by the Health Ministry to combat the spreading menace by directing the school heads to keep the school environment clean, children are the majority in the total of patients diagnosed with dengue.
Latest reports said that at lest 10 ministries have been affected by the epidemic, with a large number of employees diagnosed with dengue. Thirty employees from the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau have contracted dengue, and one has succumbed to the deadly epidemic.
