South Korea - Patients reportedly with "mysterious" respiratory illness - 28 fatalities reported - exposure to toxic humidifier chemicals confirmed

Re: South Korea - 8 patients reportedly with "mysterious" pneumonia - 7 are pregnant or recently delivered mothers

Re: South Korea - 8 patients reportedly with "mysterious" pneumonia - 7 are pregnant or recently delivered mothers

My understanding of IIP is that there is usually an underlying chronic lung problem. I still think that in this particular situation, with the young women of child bearing age, this could be flu virus damage to lungs.

You might be right. Notably, while several different pathogens have been detected from various cases, none of them are influenza viruses. And if the onsets are in early April (or even earlier), the causative agents could be long gone by the time they test for it in mid-May, perhaps 5-6 weeks after onset.

Re: South Korea - 8 patients reportedly with "mysterious" pneumonia - 7 are pregnant or recently delivered mothers

Common symptoms include coughing, difficulty in breathing, and excessive phlegm.

Those sound a lot like flu symptoms to me. I wonder what percentage of undiagnosed cases of atypical pneumonia from prior years are pregnant or post-partum women?

That's what first caught my attention when this was reported.

One of seven hospitalized with unknown virus dies 16 days after first death

Another pregnant woman has died of acute pneumonia caused by an unidentified virus, the health authorities confirmed Thursday.

She was the second death among the seven pregnant women who had been hospitalized at a Seoul hospital in April for infection with the unknown virus.

The 36-year-old woman first visited the hospital on April 21 with early flu symptoms and breathing difficulty and was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.

She died less than a month after hospitalization, like the nine-month pregnant woman who died on May 10.

Mystery virus claims 2nd victim
May 27, 2011

The second victim of a mystery virus that has infected eight patients from different parts of the country died yesterday.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus, dubbed ?acute interstitial pneumonia? by health authorities, killed the first pregnant woman on May 10. The second pregnant woman died at 4 a.m. yesterday.

Seven of the eight patients are females who are pregnant or had recently given birth. One is an adult male in his 40s...

Re: South Korea - 8 patients reportedly with "mysterious" pneumonia - 7 are pregnant or recently delivered mothers - 2nd fatality

Given that we are now three weeks later with no additional cases at all (and four of the original eight cases remain hospitalized), I have to wonder if something other than infection is going on here and causing lung damage.

Could this be an autoimmune situation where something is causing the woman's own immune system to attack her lungs? This article also indicates that fever was not a symptom here.

She was the only woman who tested positive for type-53 adenovirus but health officials earlier said that they could not find any direct connectivity between her illness and the virus.

Despite growing fears among other pregnant patients and their family members, the KCDC and the hospital have yet to find out the cause of the unidentified pneumonia.

Considering no similar case has been detected in an investigation covering 43 university hospitals nationwide, health officials said it was unlikely the virus would be infectious.

According to health officials, there were some deaths caused by unidentified types of pneumonia. However, it has rarely happened that previously healthy and young people develop symptoms for such a short period.

It was also unusual that the eight patients, including the two who died, suffered breathing difficulty unlike other pneumonia patients who usually show early symptoms such as fever.

The hospital also started studying a paper on deaths of young children aged 2-5 with similar symptoms over the years. It was investigating the possibility that the mothers could have been infected with a respiratory disease from their babies.

Another pregnant woman has died of acute pneumonia caused by an
unidentified virus, the health authorities confirmed Thursday [26 May
2011]. She was the 2nd death among the 7 pregnant women who had been
hospitalized at a Seoul hospital in April 2011 for infection with the
unknown virus.

The 36-year-old woman 1st visited the hospital on 21 Apr 2011 with
early flu symptoms and breathing difficulty and was diagnosed with
pulmonary fibrosis. She died less than a month after hospitalization,
like the 9-month pregnant woman who died on 10 May 2011. She was the
only woman who tested positive for type-53 adenovirus, but health
officials earlier said that they could not find any direct
connectivity between her illness and the virus.

Despite growing fears among other pregnant patients and their family
members, the KCDC and the hospital have yet to find out the cause of
the unidentified pneumonia. Considering no similar case has been
detected in an investigation covering 43 university hospitals
nationwide, health officials said it was unlikely the virus would be
infectious.

According to health officials, there were some deaths caused by
unidentified types of pneumonia. However, it has rarely happened that

died, suffered breathing difficulty unlike other pneumonia patients,
who usually show early symptoms such as fever.

has died 16 days after the 1st death. She was the 2nd death among the
7 pregnant women who had been hospitalized at a Seoul hospital in

No progress has been made in attempts to detect and identify the
putative viral pathogen (if indeed it is a virus), and no similar
cases have been detected in an investigation covering 43 university

Re: South Korea - 8 patients reportedly with "mysterious" pneumonia - 7 are pregnant or recently delivered mothers - 2nd fatality

I'm pretty sure the last article refers to the second death among the original eight patients, especially given the mention of a 4:00am time of death.

Given the mention of the 26th day, I think the article before that also refers to the same case, but as was true earlier in this thread, the machine translations are poor. The mention of sepsis there might be new information as well, but could just as easily be the result of a hospital-acquired infection from the 6 weeks or so spent in ICU.

This third possible death is not one of the original 8 cases, and explains the mention of sepsis.

Unclear whether this case is related or not. This could easily be an unrelated case, perhaps even an H1N1 case. And this case appears to have died one day after admission of the hospital (as referred to in Treyfish's post above).

Third pregnant woman dies of virus

May 30, 2011
Another pregnant woman¡¯s death on Thursday, presumed to be the third victim of the mystery virus, was belatedly reported. However, she wasn¡¯t one of the seven pregnant women infected by the virus who were being treated at Asan Medical Center. One man was also being treated at Asan.

According to the Busan Metropolitan City Government, the 35-year-old pregnant woman, identified as ¡°J,¡± was four months pregnant. She visited the hospital on Wednesday after suffering from a severe cold, but died Thursday, Busan city officials said.

J died on the same day as the second victim ? a 32-year-old pregnant woman ? in Seoul. Health authorities are tentatively calling the mystery virus ¡°acute interstitial pneumonia.¡±

Hospital authorities said the cause of the third victim¡¯s death is acute blood poisoning but said they were uncertain whether it is the same virus that took the lives of the two pregnant women. The Korea Centers for Disease and Prevention is working to determine if the death was caused by the mystery virus. An official from the KCDC said today that they will ¡°visit the hospital in Busan to conduct a detailed analysis on the case.¡±

If the death of J is confirmed to be due to acute pneumonia, which can develop into pulmonary fibrosis, or scarring of the lungs, the KCDC will be under pressure to come up with measures to try and halt the virus¡¯ spread. KCDC has said the infection is not limited to pregnant women.

Unlike other cases of pneumonia, this virus is unusual because it has infected healthy, young pregnant women and killed them in a very short period of time, according to health authorities. The first and second victims died only a month after hospitalization. Moreover, unlike regular pneumonia patients who usually show early symptoms such as fever, the two had sudden breathing difficulties.

This source is not Korean, but Indonesian. It explicitly sites both Xinhua and Recombinomics reports, so its mention of H1N1 does not imply that local investigators actually suspect H1N1. H1N1 remains possible, IMO, but grows increasingly unlikely as time passes, not only because they may have identified it by now, but also because of the apparent limited spread - assuming this latest case is unrelated, no cases at all have been reported with onset after May 6.
