Antibody study shows one in thirty Slovenians exposed to coronavirus

STA, 6 May 2020 - A nationwide antibody study has found that one in thirty Slovenians has probably been exposed to the novel coronavirus. This means that about 2-4% of the population may have gained some sort of immunity to Covid-19, show the results of the study released on Wednesday.

Among 1,368 persons tested, 41 or 3.1% had antibodies in their blood samples and two tested positive for Covid-19, according to Mario Poljak, a researcher at the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, which led the study.

Given that the sample was representative of the entire population, researchers can say with 95% certainty that 2-4% of the population had had an immune response to Covid-19.

Slovenia is among the countries protesting against the restriction of rights in a pandemic
OFFNews Last modified on 09 May 2020 at 19:48 253 0

After the United States, Germany, and Switzerland, protests against government restrictions on the coronavirus pandemic are rising in Slovenia. In the European country, the protest was a bicycle: thousands passed through the capital Ljubljana on Friday. They say Prime Minister Janez Jansa is using the pandemic as a pretext to restrict people's freedom.

They accuse him of trying to increase police powers, inciting hatred against migrants and personal attacks on journalists.

Slovenia imposed strict restrictions in response to Covid-19 in mid-March, but lifted some of them two weeks ago.

There are 1,450 cases of the disease and 100 deaths in the country so far.

The two-wheeler protest in Ljubljana, where cycling is very popular, is very suitable for the way of life in the city and allows the two-meter mandatory distance to be observed. Most of the time, the protest went smoothly, the BBC correspondent in the country reports. But people put up posters accusing the prime minister and government officials of being "thieves." Some of the inscriptions called for the overthrow of the government.

Environmentalists joined the protesters. They said the government had passed texts through the emergency legislation, which would block NGOs from participating in consultations on construction projects.

The government denies using the coronavirus pandemic to restrict human rights.

The centrepiece of the package is a subsidy scheme, under which the government will provide funds for employers to pay compensation to furloughed workers.

With a key goal of preserving as many jobs as possible, most of the measures in the bill are meant to help the service sector, including tourism.

The stimulus package also includes vouchers issued to residents, which will expire at the end of this year. The measure has sparked a heated debate, with the parliamentary opposition arguing that the sum of the coupons is not enough to boost consumer spending and that cash should be given out instead.

Slovenia has reported 1,473 COVID-19 cases, including 1,357 recoveries and 108 death
