The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit is warning the public about possible exposure spots for the measles.

Anyone who visited the Growing Together Family Resource Centre, W.J. Baird Public School location, in Blenheim on March 4 - 7 from 7:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. should make sure they and anyone they've come in contact with are vaccinated.

Other exposure sites include the EarlyON site at W.J. Baird Public School on Mar. 4 and 6 from 7:45 a.m. to 10 a.m., Tim Horton's on Park Avenue in Chatham on Mar. 6 from 4:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., Country Kitchen on Richmond Street in Chatham on Mar. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., and Walmart on St. Clair Street in Chatham on Mar. 7 from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

There have now been three confirmed cases of measles in Windsor-Essex, the health unit reported Monday evening...

...The health unit has also identified new exposure locations, in addition to some reported over the weekend. Anyone who visited the following locations on and during these dates and times is asked to monitor for symptoms of measles for seven to 21 days:

Hamilton Public Health Services (HPHS) has issued a warning about exposures to a travel-related confirmed case of measles in a Hamilton child.

In a news release Sunday, HPHS said exposure to the measles virus may have occurred at the following locations on the dates indicated:

Hamilton Medical Centre and Walk-In Clinic (52 Cannon Street West, Unit 103): March 5, from 9:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Chatham-Kent health unit warns of more possible measles exposures

Chatham-Kent Public Health is warning people who visited any of several sites in Chatham or Blenheim in southwestern Ontario last week that they may have been exposed to measles.

The warning follows an announcement last Friday that a student at Chatham Christian School had contracted the disease.

CK Public Health said others may have been exposed to the virus at the following times and in the following places:

Growing Together Family Resource Centre — W.J. Baird Site at 182 King St., Blenheim from March 4 to 7 from 7:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Families of the affected individuals have been notified and CK Public Health is working with daycare administration to provide guidance to staff and families.

Measles cases double in two weeks in Ontario

Ontario is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of measles cases. The virus that causes the disease continues to spread, primarily among unvaccinated people.

Public Health Ontario is reporting a total of 372 cases since the outbreak began on October 28, 2024. This represents an increase of 195 cases since the agency's last report, published on February 27.

This spread resulted in 31 hospitalizations, including one child who required intensive care. Among those hospitalized, 30 were unvaccinated, and one person's vaccination status was unknown.

The public health agency called the latest figures a " sharp increase ," attributing the expanding outbreak to transmission among unimmunized children and adolescents.

The majority of sick people are in the Southwestern Public Health Unit region, which covers Oxford and Elgin counties and the city of St. Thomas . Additionally, nearly 27% of measles cases are in the neighboring Grand Erie region .

Symptoms of this highly contagious respiratory viral illness include fever, a red rash, red, watery eyes, and a cough.

The number of cases reported in Ontario over the past five months is almost four times higher than what the province experienced during the decade from 2013 to 2023.

​The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has issued a notice of two new cases of confirmed measles in the community, with five possible exposure sites where the infected people were infectious while out in the community.

​The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit reports four new cases of measles, bringing the region’s total to five as of Wednesday.

All newly infected people are close contacts of the original case announced earlier this month and are not fully vaccinated against measles. They are currently self-isolating.

“At this time, there is no evidence of the virus spreading throughout the region and no locations have been identified where the public could have been exposed,” says Dr. Carol Zimbalatti, Medical Officer of Health. “We continue to be in regular communication with the individuals and their close contacts to help keep our local risk level low, and we appreciate how closely public health isolation recommendations have been followed by these individuals.”​..

Ontario measles outbreak linked to New Brunswick Mennonite gathering

An ongoing outbreak of measles in Ontario can be linked back to a “large gathering” last fall in New Brunswick’s Mennonite community, according to Ontario’s chief medical officer of health.

In a letter to the province’s health units sent earlier this month, Dr. Kieran Moore said measles cases have been on the rise in southwestern Ontario and over 90 per cent of the cases have been among the unvaccinated.

“Cases could spread in any unvaccinated community or population but are disproportionately affecting some Mennonite, Amish, and other Anabaptist communities due to a combination of under-immunization and exposure to measles in certain areas,” Moore wrote.

Moore said in his letter that there have been 177 cases in the province related to this outbreak as of Feb. 26, most of which were in Grand Erie and Southwestern Public Health units.​..

A second person in Lambton has tested positive for measles and public health officials are asking people who may have been exposed to monitor for symptoms of the highly contagious virus.

Friday, Lambton Public Health announced its first case of measles in the area as the province deals with a major outbreak of the virus which was once virtually eradicated in Ontario. Sunday, officials said via a news release that another person had tested positive for measles.

In a news release, officials asked that anyone who has a weakened immune system, is pregnant or who hasn’t been vaccinated to see if they have been in the areas below...

Huron Perth Public Health issues measles exposure alert

Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is warning the public of a possible measles exposure at the Listowel Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department waiting room. The exposure occurred on Sunday, March 23, between 7:23 p.m. and 10:31 p.m.

Individuals who were present at the hospital during this time and were born in 1970 or later, and are not up to date with their measles vaccinations, are urged to contact public health at 1-888-221-2133 ext. 3299. Measles is highly contagious and can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area.​..

Two more measles cases have been confirmed in Waterloo Region.

It comes after the first local case was reported on Friday.

The three cases are the first to be identified in the community since 2019. Health officials say they’re linked to the growing outbreak in southwestern Ontario.​
Region of Waterloo Public Health has identified two places where people may have been exposed.

Both were Friday, March 21 in Waterloo:

Southwestern Public Health on Tuesday afternoon (March 25) reported two more measles exposures in St. Thomas.

They took place in the Emergency Department at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on March 17 from 6:47 a.m. to 10:16 a.m. and again March 19 between 7:40 a.m. and 11:40 a.m.

If you were in the department at either of these times, were born in 1970 or later, and are not up to date with your vaccinations, please call public health at 1-800-922-0096. This includes those who were only present briefly as measles is highly contagious and can linger in the air for up to two hours.​..

(Toronto) Ontario recorded 102 new cases of measles last week. Public Health Ontario says there have been 572 cases since the outbreak began in October, including 453 confirmed and 119 probable. Of the 42 people hospitalized, two required intensive care and 36 were children, most of them unvaccinated.

This highly infectious disease still primarily affects unvaccinated infants, children, and adolescents, primarily in the Southwest and Grand Erie public health zones.

The measles vaccine is usually given to babies as young as one year old, but Ontario public health units have made the first dose available to babies as young as six months old in response to the outbreak.

Geographically, measles has spread to Waterloo and Lambton, Quebec. In Chatham-Kent, Ontario, near Detroit, the number of cases nearly doubled to 39 last week, and the spread continues in nearby Huron-Perth, where 55 people have been sickened.

Nearly all of the cases are linked to a multi-jurisdictional outbreak that began with a travel-related case in New Brunswick and spread to Ontario and Manitoba. Ontario's medical officer of health sent a memo to colleagues at local public health units earlier this month stating that the outbreak occurred at a large gathering of guests from Mennonite communities in New Brunswick last fall.

Dr. Kieran Moore said the cases "disproportionately affect some Mennonite, Amish, and other Anabaptist communities due to under-vaccination and exposure to measles in some areas. "

Shortly after Christmas, a student at Walsingham Christian School, a private school in Norfolk County affiliated with the Old Colony Mennonite Church, contracted measles.

Principal Martin Klassen said an impromptu meeting was held with the school's parents to discuss vaccination, and information in Low German was distributed to a few parents who were not fluent in English. Most of the school's children have been vaccinated, Klassen said. As for parents whose children hadn't, "they were open to the idea," he added.

In total, four children tested positive for measles at the school in late January and early February, and all have returned to school. "The decision of families to vaccinate or not their children has nothing to do with our baptismal view of religion. Absolutely nothing. Our ministers, our church, our community, we would not disseminate an opinion on vaccination," the principal assured.

Many people in Ontario do not have a family doctor to help them keep up with their vaccination schedule.

So far, Ottawa has not reported any cases of measles, but is monitoring the situation closely and preparing.

Outbreaks are also being monitored in other provinces, although the number of cases is lower, including British Columbia, Manitoba, and Alberta, where 18 people have been diagnosed, most of them minors. Last week, Saskatchewan confirmed its second case and said it was investigating a third. The latest figures in Quebec are unchanged at 40 cases since last week.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. The World Health Organization reports that the virus can remain active in the air or on infected surfaces for up to two hours.

Measles typically begins with fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a reddish rash that begins on the face and spreads to the body and limbs. The virus can cause pneumonia, brain inflammation, and death.

The number of cases reported in Ontario in the past week is higher than the number of cases recorded in the decade 2013-2023.

In the United States this year, 378 confirmed cases have been reported across 18 jurisdictions, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week.​
