By Sidra Jafri
Published: January 19, 2025 at 2:26PM EST

Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) is investigating a new case of measles, marking the second known instance in the Haldimand-Norfolk area this year.

The latest case involves a child, prompting health officials to issue a public advisory and step up efforts to contain the spread of the highly contagious disease.

In a media release issued on Saturday, GEPH said they have begun tracing potential contacts of the child to identity anyone who may have been exposed.

They stated the child has no recent travel history and the source of the child’s infection is under investigation.

This latest case comes just two weeks after another case was confirmed by the health unit.

On Jan. 10, GEPH stated in a media release that an adult from Haldimand-Norfolk was recovering from the virus at home. They said that the source of his infection is currently unknown.

GEPH is warning that those who may have been in the following areas during these times, could have been exposed to the virus:

65 Donly Dr. N., Suite B, Unit 4, Simcoe, Ont., on Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 5 p.m. to clinic close.
Courtland Old Colony Church on Dec. 29 from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Delhi Community Health Centre Walk-in Clinic on Jan. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Confirmed cases of measles have now been reported at two public health units in southern Ontario.

Grand Erie Public Health said nine people have the highly contagious virus.

Of those, three are children and the remaining six are adults.

Only one of those cases is in Brantford-Brant, while the other eight are in Haldimand County and Norfolk County.

Southwestern Public Health, which covers Oxford County, Elgin County and St. Thomas, confirmed Thursday they have one active case. Officials believe it is likely connected to those reported by Grand Erie Public Health.

“There have been some links within the cases and then some of the transmission has been secondary as a result of that,” explained Filip Pajtondziev, the infectious diseases manager for Grand Erie Public Health.

CTV News asked Dr. Joyce Lock, the acting medical officer of health for Southwestern Public Health, if the recent measles cases could be called an outbreak.

“This is considered a cluster,” she told CTV News...

With 24 confirmed cases of measles in the Grand Erie Public Health agency’s area and another eight cases in nearby Southwestern Public Health, there are now dozens of exposure sites.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran said his Southwestern agency has ordered more vaccines for measles and is currently finishing a review of the immunization records for all school-aged children in the region.

“As a result, many families have been recently notified by public health of the need to update their vaccinations, including measles-containing vaccine,” Tran said.

Some families simply need to report their immunizations.

According to data for 2024, and including January 2025, Southwestern had 29 cases of measles and Grand Erie Health, which now includes Brantford, Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk, had 17 cases.

That represents almost 57 per cent of all of Ontario’s 81 cases last year...
