Confirmed case of measles in Hamilton area child: public health

​The City of Hamilton says it is investigating a confirmed case of measles.

Hamilton Public Health (HPH) says the confirmed case is tied to a Hamilton area child and they are investigating several local exposures.

Measles exposure may have occurred at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Elementary School at 181 Belmont Avenue, near Cannon Street East, between Feb. 4 and Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. to 6:10 p.m. on each day.

Exposure could have also taken place at the McMaster Children’s Hospital Emergency Department at 1200 Main Street West near University Avenue on Feb. 10 from 11:59 a.m. to 12:29 p.m.

HPH says they have notified and are following up directly with identified contacts who may have been exposed to the virus.​..

If you were at LifeLabs Woodstock recently at 510 Ingersoll Avenue, you may have been exposed to measles.

Southwestern Public Health is alerting the public of the incident on Feb. 12 from 10:11 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.

Anyone who was at LifeLabs Woodstock in that timeframe, was born in 1970 or later, and is not up to date with vaccinations is asked to call public health at 1-800-922-0096 extension 1232.​..

Five new cases of measles confirmed in Norfolk County

​Grand Erie Public Health is confirming five new cases of measles in Norfolk County.

The latest cases bring the total number of confirmed cases in the Grand Erie region, which includes Haldimand, Norfolk County, Brantford and Brant County, to 53. Eight of those cases involve adults while children make up the remaining 45 infections. Of the new cases, three children and two adults are sick.

All the people involved in the latest illnesses are recovering at home.

The Norfolk Hospital at 365 West Street in Simcoe is considered to be a potential exposure site:

Feb. 14 from 9:20 p.m. until 11:30 p.m.

Feb. 16 from 12 p.m. until 10 p.m.

...In the wake of news last week that the Southwestern public health region was dealing with 20 confirmed cases, officials are warning about two new potential exposures to the virus in area health-care settings.

The first potential exposure occurred on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 2:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at the emergency department of St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital at 189 Elm St., St. Thomas.

The second potential exposure occurred on Sunday, Feb. 16, from 8:01 p.m. to 10:08 p.m. at Woodstock Hospital’s emergency department at 310 Juliana Dr., Woodstock.

Anyone who was present at these locations during these timeframes who were born in 1970 or later, and are not up to date with their vaccinations, are urged to contact public health at 1-800-922-0096 ext. 1232. Even people who were only at these locations for a moment or two are encouraged to call since the highly contagious measles virus can linger in the air for as long as two hours.​..

An additional five measles cases have been reported in the Grand Erie Public Health region as of Wednesday, bringing the confirmed total to 53 cases.

The outbreak is largely concentrated in Norfolk County, with one case in Brant County, according to Sarah Titmus, the health unit’s program director.

Nearly all of the cases of the extremely contagious airborne virus are part of a “high risk” group of unvaccinated or undervaccinated individuals, Titmus told the board of health Wednesday morning. ...

The Grand Erie Public Health Unit is investigating four new cases of measles.

In a news release on Thursday, the health unit said the latest cases were identified in Norfolk County and Brant County.

Two of the recently ill people are recovering in hospital while the other two are at home.

Thursday’s update brings the total number of confirmed illnesses to 57, nine of which have occurred among adults and 48 within children.

The health unit has listed two potential exposure sites:

Walsingham Christian School, 6th Concession Rd., Walsingham, February 10, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grand Erie Public Health is investigating another 11 confirmed cases of measles in Norfolk County.

The latest illness brings the total number of confirmed cases to 68. Public Health said at least 13 adults and 55 children in Haldimand County, Norfolk County, Brantford and Brant County are sick.

Ontario is reporting 84 new measles cases over the last two weeks, nearly doubling the province's total count since an outbreak started in the autumn.

The new cases bring Ontario's total this year to 119 that were confirmed in a lab and 23 that are deemed "probable," far surpassing the 101 total infections recorded in the province between 2013 and 2023.

Almost all of the new cases are connected to an interprovincial outbreak that began in October, which has sickened 177 people in Ontario and also saw the virus spread in New Brunswick and Manitoba. Quebec has also reported an outbreak of 27 cases that began in December.

As a result of the outbreak, 18 children in Ontario have been hospitalized, including one who required intensive care.

The highly contagious — but preventable — disease has primarily infected children and teenagers who are unvaccinated.

One of the cases reported Thursday was in an unvaccinated child who acquired measles outside of Canada and required hospitalization.​..

​Public health officials at the epicentre of Ontario’s measles outbreak near London have flagged four new potential exposure sites, including two area hospitals and a medical centre, and are urging people who may be at risk to contact them.

Southwestern Public Health is advising those who may have been exposed and were born after 1970 or are not up to date with their vaccinations that they could be at risk of contracting the highly infectious virus.

York Region Public Health is investigating a confirmed case of measles that they say is linked to an international flight that landed at Toronto Pearson.

The health unit warns anyone who was on board Korean Air flight KE 073 that departed from Seoul, South Korea on Feb. 22 and landed at Terminal 3 at the Toronto airport at around 9:35 a.m. may have been exposed to measles.

They add anyone who was present at that airport terminal from 9:35 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 22 or at Southlake Health’s emergency department on Feb. 24 from 10:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST or the pediatric unit on Feb. 25 from 8:25 a.m. to 4 p.m., may have also been exposed to measles...

Oxford and Elgin counties have the highest number of measles cases in Canada, Ontario's public health agency says, as local medical officials warn of more possible exposures to the virus.

As of Feb. 26, 177 cases of measles had been detected in the province since Oct. 28, 2024, according to Public Health Ontario, most in the area covered by Southwestern Public Health (SWPH)

Eighty-five of those cases were in Elgin and Oxford counties as well as St. Thomas and Woodstock, and 79 of them were in neighbouring Grand Erie Public Health's area, which includes Brant, Norfolk and Haldimand counties.

Alongside potential exposures at three medical facilities, the latest alert includes a notice that visitors to a community arena in Aylmer may have been exposed to the virus.

Anyone born in 1970 or later who isn't up to date on their vaccinations should call public health if they were exposed, officials say.

The newly reported exposures are as follows:

East Elgin Community Complex (arena) - 531 Talbot St., Aylmer.
Feb.15, 2025, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Alexandra Hospital Emergency Department- 29 Noxon St., Ingersoll.

While exposures at clinics and hospitals have been common in the past several weeks due to the outbreak, news of an exposure at the East Elgin Community Complex drew frustration from residents who commented on a SWPH notice posted to social media.

It's not the first time the community centre has been the subject of an alert. On Feb. 24, officials warned of a potential exposure on Feb. 17 between 5 p.m., and 8 p.m.

According to the East Elgin Community Complex's online calendar, a hockey tournament was underway at the date and time of the most recent exposure.​..

The Health Unit says the positive case is in an unvaccinated adult who travelled within the province.

Niagara Region Public Health (NRPH) is reporting three confirmed cases of measles as Ontario faces the largest outbreak the province has seen in almost 30 years.

The new cases involve children who have not been vaccinated against the virus, officials say in a statement Wednesday.

Anyone who visited MedCare Clinics at Scott Street Medical Centre in St. Catharines between the hours of 4:20 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. on March 2 are being advised to watch for symptoms for up to 21 days.

NRPH is currently reaching out to anyone who has been identified as being exposed to the virus.​..

Peel Public Health said the latest case of the highly contagious disease was confirmed on Tuesday and included a recent history of international travel.

Peel Public Health investigating a confirmed case of measles

BRAMPTON, ON (March 6, 2025) – Peel Public Health (PPH) is investigating a case of measles that was confirmed on March 4 with a recent history of international travel.

The public may have been exposed on the following flight or locations:
  • February 24, Air Canada, Flight AC57, Dubai to Toronto
  • February 24, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Terminal 1, between 8:36 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • February 27, Aboud Health Walk-in Clinic & Pharmacy between 3:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • February 27 – 28, Trillium Health Partners Credit Valley Hospital – Emergency Room between 8:45 p.m. to 12:41 a.m.
PPH advises anyone who believes they have been exposed to the measles virus to do the following:
  • Check their immunization record to confirm they and their family members are up-to-date with their measles vaccinations (MMR or MMRV). Those who are unsure can check with their health care provider. Two doses are generally recommended for anyone born in or after 1970. In general, those born before 1970 are considered protected against measles.
  • Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact their health care provider, or if not available, Peel Public Health as soon as possible to get advice. Do not attend work or school. Those concerned about symptoms should call their health care provider before going to see them to inform them they may have been in contact with someone who has measles.
With March break approaching, Peel Public Health advises residents to make sure they are up to date with measles vaccination, especially before international travel. All Ontarians over six months old are eligible for MMR vaccine if traveling.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily to those who are not immunized or have not previously had measles. Infants under one year of age, unimmunized pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of complications.

Measles symptoms begin 7-21 days after infection and may include:
  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis, i.e. pink eye), sensitivity to light
  • Red rash lasting 4 to 7 days
