COVID-19 hospitalizations up again as Ontario logs more than 3,000 new cases despite limited testing
166 patients now requiring intensive care
CBC News · Posted: Mar 31, 2022 10:48 AM ET | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Ontario reported 807 people hospitalized with COVID-19 on Thursday with 166 of those patients requiring intensive care.

The number of hospitalizations is up from 778 on Wednesday and 661 one week ago.

Of the hospitalizations reported, the number of patients in intensive care is up by one from 165 reported a day before and 165 reported at this time last week.

According to the Ministry of Health, 48 per cent of people hospitalized were admitted specifically for treatment of symptoms brought on by the virus, while the rest were admitted for other reasons and then tested positive. Meanwhile, 74 per cent of people in ICU were admitted because of COVID-19, while the rest were added for other reasons, then tested positive for the virus.

Another 3,139 new cases were logged through limited PCR testing Thursday, marking the first time cases have surpassed the 3,000-mark since Feb. 10. There were 18,318 tests completed Wednesday with 6,284 currently pending.

Dr. Peter Jüni, who heads the province's COVID-19 science advisory table, said Wednesday he estimates the real number of cases provincewide to be roughly between 30,000 to 35,000 based on wastewater surveillance data...

Ontario is reporting 804 people in hospital with COVID on Friday, with 167 in intensive care.

This is down by three for hospitalizations and up by one in ICUs since the previous day. Some experts have said Ontario is entering a 6th wave of COVID as figures trend upwards.

Last Friday, there were 667 hospitalizations with 161 in ICU.

Of the 804 people in hospital with COVID-19, 49 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while 51 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 167 people in ICUs with the virus, 71 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 29 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 3,519 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Friday, though that is an underestimate of the true widespread transmission of the virus due to testing restrictions. The provincial case total now stands at 1,166,128.

The death toll in the province has risen to 12,451 as 9 more virus-related deaths were added...

A total of 855 people are in hospital in Ontario with COVID-19 receiving care, according to provincial data released Saturday.

A total of 165 people are in Ontario intensive care units (ICU).

The figures represent a single-day increase in the number of people in hospital and a slight decrease in the number of ICU patients.

The week-over-week figures have increased, with 148 more people in hospital on April 2 compared to March 26. The number of people in ICU increased by eight compared to last week.

The province also reported 3,233 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Saturday. That figure, experts say, is likely an underestimate of the true number of cases due to testing restrictions that limit access to PCR tests in the province...

Ontario reported 3,077 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Sunday.

Sunday also saw another 10 deaths recorded.

A total of 12,470 have now died since the pandemic began, while a total of 1,172,438 cases have been identified.

A total of 1,188 people are in hospital in Ontario with COVID-19 receiving care, according to data from the province released Saturday. Among them, 168 people are in Ontario intensive care units (ICU).

That marks an increase of 53 in hospitalizations and two in ICU occupancy compared to Friday’s report. Ontario reported 1,135 people in hospital with COVID-19 and 166 people in intensive care with or due to the virus on Friday.

The province reported 3,797 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Saturday. That figure, experts say, is likely an underestimate of the true number of cases due to testing restrictions that limit access to PCR tests in the province.

The director of Ontario’s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table recently estimated that the province was recording “five per cent or even less” of its COVID-19 cases. He estimated the province was experiencing between 100,000 and 120,000 new COVID-19 cases per day...
