Novel Influenza A (H1N1) 09 Swine Flu - Update 109

Latest Numbers
The cumulative total of confirmed cases in New Zealand is 2250, up from 2230 yesterday. The actual number of cases of Novel Influenza A (H1N1) 09 will be significantly higher, as only a small proportion of people with symptoms are being tested. This is because for most people, it's a mild illness and they will recover readily at home without needing medical treatment.

The number of deaths from Influenza A (H1N1) 09 swine flu remains at 10. It is important to note that these 10 deaths reported by the Ministry are deaths from swine flu, where swine flu was a primary cause of death. The Ministry will continue to report deaths from H1N1 where it is definitive that H1N1 was the major contributing factor to the person's death. Where people have H1N1 at the time of death, but it is unclear as to whether or not it led to the death, normal pathology and testing procedures will be carried out. This can take a considerable amount of time to determine an outcome.

Australian Situation

Influenza A (H1N1) Swine Flu - Update 111

Schools are being advised to keep a close eye on students and children with underlying health conditions.

These children, including those with serious asthma, are particularly susceptible to the influenza virus, including the Pandemic Influena A (H1N1) swine flu.

The Ministries of Health and Education say it's important that schools take early action and call parents or caregivers of children who show symptoms.

Deputy Director of Public Health Dr Fran McGrath says students and children who have flu-like symptoms should stay at home until they are well and are no longer coughing or sneezing. For the vast majority of people this will be a mild to moderate illness, however it can be severe for some. If symptoms become worse, people should seek medical advice from their GP or phone Healthline on 0800 611116 .

Says Dr McGrath "This is usually three to four days from the start of symptoms, but it could be up to a week. Staying away from other people when you are sick will help slow the spread of the virus in the community and allow both schools and health services to better manage the impact of the flu pandemic."

"This is an opportunity for students and teachers to remind themselves that personal hygiene is really important in reducing the chances of getting pandemic influenza, or passing it on to others. Simple measures can make a huge difference, so remember to cover coughs and sneezes and wash and dry your hands frequently."

MOH is saying what it knows for certain. Releasing wild speculation would be counter productive.

Re: NZ Govt Media Releases

I agree.

One point I would like to make thou - if a person has lived a happy and 'normal' life dealing with some preexisting illness and then H1N1 comes along and they die due to aggravation of that preexisting illness by H1N1 - then in my books it was H1N1 which caused their death and not their 'preexisting illness'.

It seems to me that MoH is a little to keen to think differently.

(I've had it by the way - will post my personal experance when I get a chance.)

Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 Swine Flu - Update 112

Media Release
21 July 2009

New Zealand's health services continue to feel the pressure from both seasonal and non-seasonal influenza this winter, but are coping well.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says some hospitals are postponing elective surgery and are at full capacity in their Intensive Care Units (ICUs) but advise us they remain able to provide a quality health service.

"Latest data from ESR's GP sentinel surveillance system shows a sharp spike in the number of consultations for influenza-like illnesses (ILIs)."

What this surveillance data shows us is that we have not yet reached a peak in the number of people who will experience influenza this year. We anticipate that our health services will continue to be under pressure for some time yet."

Latest Numbers
There are a total of 2443 confirmed cases of Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu, up from 2368 yesterday.

The actual number of cases of Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 will be significantly higher, as only a small proportion of people with symptoms are being tested.

This is because for most people, it's a mild illness and they will recover readily at home without needing medical treatment.

The number of deaths from Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu is now 11, up one since yesterday. The latest death is a child in the Mid Central DHB region, who had underlying medical conditions and died within the past week.

Please note these 11 deaths reported by the Ministry are deaths from swine flu, where swine flu was a primary cause of death. The Ministry will continue to report deaths from H1N1 where it is definitive that H1N1 was the major contributing factor to the person's death.

Where people have H1N1 at the time of death, but it is unclear if it led to the death, normal pathology and testing procedures will be carried out. It can take a considerable amount of time to determine an outcome.

Healthline Calls
Healthline continues to receive a high number of calls from people with influenza-like symptoms, although the volume of calls has dropped in the past week. Between the 11th and the 17th of July 2009, about a third of all calls to Healthline were related to influenza-like illnesses (ILIs).

GP Consultations
There has been a continuing sharp increase in consultations for ILIs through ESR's GP sentinal surveillance system since reported last week. So far, the highest ILI consultation rates have been reported among children and teenagers aged from birth to 19 years. The highest weekly ILI consultation rates have been reported from South Auckland, Wellington and South Canterbury health districts.

Numbers of people in hospitals with the Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09
As at midday today, a total of 74 people are reported to be in hospital with Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 or its complications, and 26 of these people are in intensive care.

The number of patients currently in intensive care with confirmed Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 broken down by region is as follows:
Northland (3), Auckland (5), Waitemata (4), Counties Manukau (4), Waikato (3), Hawkes Bay (1), Capital and Coast (3), Nelson/Marlborough (1), Canterbury (2).

Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 Swine Flu - Update 113

Students living in close contact with others, for example student accommodation and boarding schools, need to be proactive in keeping themselves healthy, and in being careful to limit the spread of influenza if they have symptoms.

Deputy Director of Public Health Dr Fran McGrath says, "Information from New Zealand and other countries is that this pandemic influenza is more likely to infect children and young people. So students need to be especially vigilant about reducing their chance of getting the virus and passing it on to others."

Good personal hygiene including washing and drying hands frequently and covering coughs and sneezes, are the most effective ways of limiting spread of this virus. Sick students should stay away from classes and keep their distance from other people.

General practices saw a small decrease over the second week of the holidays, in consultations for influenza symptoms. Schools which reopened this week for a new term have been bracing themselves for an increase in sickness among students now the holiday period has ended.

Latest Numbers
There are a total of 2477 confirmed cases of Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu, up from 2443 yesterday.

The actual number of cases of Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 will be significantly higher, as only a small proportion of people with symptoms are being tested.

This is because for most people, it's a mild illness and they will recover readily at home without needing medical treatment.

The number of deaths from Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu is now 11, which is unchanged since yesterday. These reported deaths are deaths where pandemic influenza or its complications are the primary cause of death.

Influenza A (H1N1) Swine Flu - Update 114

Director of Public Health Dr Mark Jacobs today said the swine flu pandemic is still likely to be in its early days and continued vigilance was important.

?Worldwide, the pandemic is still of mild to moderate severity. However, the threat from this new virus is real and something we are likely to have to face for some time yet,? Dr Jacobs said. "We are continually learning more about it."

?Like seasonal influenza, the pandemic virus is transmitted easily by exposure to infected droplets from coughing or sneezing. Most people have little or no immunity to this new virus, and we expect it will cause more infections than are seen with seasonal flu.?

?It is likely that by the end of the pandemic, many New Zealanders will have caught it at some point. The disease continues to be mild to moderate for the vast majority of New Zealanders infected, though some people are experiencing more severe illness,? according to Dr Jacobs.

?Most of the severe cases occur in people with significant underlying health conditions. Pregnant women also appear to be at higher risk for complications."

Dr Jacobs said health services were coping well despite the increasing number of cases putting pressure on GPs and hospitals.

There have now been 11 deaths in New Zealand linked to the pandemic. All who have died had underlying health conditions. Seventy-one people are currently in hospital after contracting the virus, with 24 of those in intensive care.

Latest numbers
New Zealand now has 2525 laboratory-confirmed cases, up 48 from 2477 yesterday.

The level of illness is likely to be much higher than the number of laboratory-confirmed cases reported daily. Testing is now done only in the management of severe cases. Also, many people with swine flu are able to look after themselves at home and do not need to see their GP

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Swine Flu ? Update 115

The Ministry of Health?s Principal Medical Advisor today reassured New Zealanders that health services continue to provide quality care despite the increasing pressure on GPs and hospitals from the rising number of swine flu cases.

?The Ministry is regularly monitoring the situation and is working closely with district health boards and clinicians to manage the combined pressures brought on by the outbreak of the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus and seasonal influenza,? Dr David Galler said.

?We expect our health services will remain under pressure for some time yet as the pandemic virus continues to spread in our communities. But the system is coping well and we are working with the sector to ensure issues about capacity and capability are managed appropriately,? he noted.

?DHBs, for their part, are working together and sharing resources to ensure the needs of patients are met.?

Dr Galler noted that ?some Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are already working at full capacity and some people who have become seriously ill after contracting the pandemic virus have been prioritised over some non-urgent surgery.?

The vast majority of New Zealanders who had swine flu experienced mild to moderate symptoms. Most of them recovered without requiring medical attention within a week from the onset of symptoms. However, a small proportion have gone on to develop more serious illness, and this is likely to remain the pattern.

Latest numbers

New Zealand now has 2585 laboratory-confirmed cases, up 60 from 2525 yesterday.

The level of illness would be much higher than the number of laboratory-confirmed cases reported daily. Testing is now done only in the management of severe cases. Also, many people with swine flu are able to look after themselves at home and do not need to see their GP.

There have now been 11 deaths in New Zealand linked to the pandemic. All who have died had underlying health conditions. Seventy-two people are currently in hospital after contracting the virus, with 23 of those in intensive care.

Influenza A (H1N1) Swine Flu - Update 116

Latest Numbers

There are a total of 2662 confirmed cases of Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu, up from 2585.

The number of deaths from Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu has risen by one to 12. The latest death is a woman who died in Middlemore Hospital earlier this month.

Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr Fran McGrath said that total deaths due to Pandemic Influenza are those that meet the national definition of death due to Pandemic Influenza. Deaths that the Coroner had referred to also include some deaths where a person had a positive laboratory test, but the cause of death has not yet been confirmed. If pandemic influenza is later confirmed as the cause of death, this death will be added to the national total.

When a person dies in hospital, the responsible clinician is usually able to confirm whether pandemic influenza was the cause of death. When a person dies in the community, or if the cause of death is not clear, the death may be referred to a Coroner to investigate. Such investigations generally take some time.

Influenza A (H1N1) Swine Flu - Update 117

The Ministry of Health?s weekly monitoring may indicate a levelling in the number of people going to the GP with flu symptoms.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says ?While the numbers of people going to their GP with flu symptoms may appear to be levelling, there are still high rates of flu in the community. Many people are still getting sick, and tragically some deaths are occurring. Around the country 22 people are seriously ill in ICU.

?It is far too soon to draw any conclusions around whether we have reached the peak or if this slowing reflects less social contact because of the school holidays. Flu spreads more readily from family to family through contact between children at school.

?There are indications in New Zealand and Australia that the rate of school age children presenting at GPs with flu symptoms slowed during the holidays so it is possible we will see the GP consultation rate start increasing again now that schools are back.

?There was also a slowing in hospital admissions last week, but again, more time is needed to draw any conclusions.

?The pattern in New Zealand is also similar to the state of Victoria, where we are advised there are early signs flu cases may be starting to decline.

?A new information campaign to help people reduce the spread of flu starts tomorrow with new Ministry of Health TV ads. Also, hand-washing posters are being sent to schools throughout the country to help schools remind kids about the importance of regular hand-washing. The campaign aims to lessen the pressure on the health system by helping people look after themselves.

Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr Fran McGrath, says with the pandemic still with us it was important people continued to make sure they washed and dried their hands thoroughly, covered coughs and sneezes, stayed home if unwell and sought help if their symptoms worsened.

"People unwell with influenza should carefully avoid contact with sick and elderly people, as well as pregnant women and young children, and not visit hospitals unless for treatment for their own illness," Dr McGrath said.

Latest Numbers

Numbers of people in hospitals with the Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09

As at midday today, a total of 72 people are reported to be in hospital with Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 or its complications, including 22 in intensive care.

The number of patients currently in intensive care with confirmed Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 broken down by region is as follows:
Northland ( 2), Auckland ( 7), Counties Manukau (4 ), Waikato (1 ), Lakes (1) Capital and Coast (2 ), Nelson Marlborough (1) Canterbury (4 ).

There are a total of 2704 confirmed cases of Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu, up from 2662 yesterday.

The actual number of cases of Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 will be significantly higher, as only a small proportion of people with symptoms are being tested.

This is because for most people, it's a mild illness and they will recover readily at home without needing medical treatment.

The number of deaths from Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu is now 13, up one since yesterday. The latest death is that of a woman in her 30's who died in Wellington in recent days.

Please note these 13 deaths reported by the Ministry are deaths from swine flu, where swine flu was a primary cause of death. The Ministry will continue to report deaths from H1N1 where H1N1 was the major contributing factor to the person's death.

Where people have H1N1 at the time of death, but it is unclear if it led to the death, normal pathology and testing procedures will be carried out. It can take a considerable amount of time to determine an outcome.

Healthline Calls

There has been a continued high number of influenza-related calls to Healthline over the past week, although numbers have decreased since the peaks Healthline experienced in mid-June and early July.

GP Consultations

The data below is from ESR's sentinel general practice surveillance system and shows the highest weekly influenza-like illness (ILI) consultation rates are nearly two times higher than the winter peak experienced in the last two years.
Weekly consultation rates for influenza-like ilness in New Zealand 2007, 2008, 2009.

Influenza A (H1N1) Swine Flu - Update 118

The Ministry of Health has called on the community to be especially aware of those people who fall ill and may need good friends and neighbours to check on them.

Deputy Director of Public Health Dr Fran McGrath says "We all know of people in our community who live alone or who don't have good support networks. We need to keep an eye on them if they are unwell, and make sure they get help if their illness becomes more severe."

These may be older people, a single person, or someone who is the only adult in a household of children or teenagers.

Dr McGrath says people should seek medical advice if they have influenza which gets worse, or if they have influenza and are pregnant or have a chronic medical condition.

"Anyone with a friend or relative in this situation should stay in regular contact to make certain their condition hasn't suddenly become worse. Those who live alone, or are the only adults in their household, can help by asking a friend or relative to be their 'flu buddy' by phoning them daily to check on their situation."

Dr McGrath says that for most people, pandemic influenza will be a mild to moderate illness, and they will recover well at home without needing treatment.

Influenza A (H1N1) Swine Flu - Update 119

The first of five Ministry of Health commercials has gone to air reminding New Zealanders to be vigilant about protecting themselves from flu' viruses.

Ministry of Health Chief Advisor, Dr Sandy Dawson, said the series of television and radio adverts aimed to repeat the messages that thoroughly washing and drying hands, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home from work or school if unwell and contacting Healthline or a GP if symptoms worsened, were the best ways to limit the spread of Swine flu'.

"The Ministry continues to concentrate on making sure good advice about dealing with Swine flu' reaches the public," Dr Dawson said.

It was also important to remember that even though both Swine flu and seasonal flu were currently present in the community, not all aches and pains would be 'the flu', he said.

"Just like any other time, if you are unwell it is important that if symptoms worsen or are different from symptoms commonly associated with flu', that you seek appropriate advice from Healthline, a GP or practice nurse," Dr Dawson said.

Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 Swine Flu - Update 123

This week marks 100 days of action to slow the spread of pandemic influenza virus in New Zealand; a hundred days since the Ministry of Health launched a major national response to contain the virus and slow its spread in the community.

It is a massive exercise which has involved agencies right across the Government and health sectors, who have been working together and have marshalled resources to implement the Pandemic Influenza Action Plan.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says this pandemic has touched almost every section of our community, from health professionals such as GPs, nurses and pharmacists, to employers, private businesses and families.

Mr Ryall says "At very short notice, our whole community has successfully pulled together, in a practical and sustained response to this influenza pandemic. We know that our health professionals and hospitals in particular have been under pressure, and have coped extremely well with the increased demand on top of the normal winter peaks.

"People from all walks of life have taken on board the health advice about not spreading the virus, and in doing so have helped slow the spread to others and reduce the pressure so that our health services can continue to treat those who are the sickest."

The virus was first identified in New Zealand on 25 April, in a group of travellers who had just returned to Auckland from Mexico. However its spread into the wider community was delayed for more than six weeks through an effective health and border containment operation, assisted by school closures and the voluntary isolation of suspected cases.

By early June, the first evidence of community spread was seen in Greater Auckland, Wellington, the Bay of Plenty and Canterbury. From there, the virus spread gradually into neighbouring regions, although some areas have shown little evidence of cases to date.

As the number of cases began to rise, so too did pressure on general practice, hospitals and Healthline. Some District Health Boards began prioritising resources and re-scheduling some elective and non-urgent surgery to ensure services could be provided for those patients with greatest need, including those seriously ill with pandemic influenza.

Health services report they are now managing better and some report fewer hospital admissions and less need for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in recent days.

Mr Ryall says "It is too early to say whether this signals any weakening in pandemic influenza or whether we are seeing the normal fluctuation that you expect, particularly with a new virus. It is common for influenza numbers to rise and fall over several months and this pandemic may follow a similar pattern."

The weekly update of hospitalisations, ICU admissions and general practice surveillance will be provided tomorrow, giving a fuller picture.

Latest Numbers

The total number of confirmed cases of Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu is 2855, up from 2810 yesterday.

The number of deaths from Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 09 swine flu is 14. The latest death is of a man in his 50s, who died in Christchurch last week. He had a number of underlying medical conditions.

confirm laboratory testing in an accurate and timely manner. For more information about this reporting change go to the WHO website: http://www.who.int/en/
