Reopening of places of worship and curfew lifted in Niamey
5/13/2020 6:33 PM
"The government, on the proposal of the religious leaders, after consulting the COVID-19 Committee of Experts and in view of the favorable trend in the development of the disease at COVID-19, decides to reopen places of worship from Wednesday May 13, "the government announced in a statement read on state radio. This measure was eagerly awaited, when the government had already lightened measures for Ramadan. The government also announced "the lifting of the curfew in Niamey from May 13, 2020".
The government asks the "religious leaders to require the faithful" that they observe "the minimum barrier measures", in particular the washing of hands with soap or hydro-alcoholic gel, the disinfection of places of worship before each prayer, the wearing of a mask and respect for the physical distance of at least one meter. "In case of deterioration of the situation in connection with the reopening of places of worship, the government reserves the right to reconsider this decision", warns the press release.
At the end of March, Niamey was shaken by riots against the measure and the ban on collective prayers. The police had arrested nearly 300 suspected rioters during the violence between April 17 and 21, according to the police. After these riots and before the start of Ramadan, the authorities had reduced the curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. instead of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Niger records 854 cases of coronavirus including 47 deaths, according to a report Tuesday evening May 12. In addition to the coronavirus pandemic, Niger has been facing violence from jihadist groups for several years, which has hit the entire Sahel region.
