Reopening of places of worship and curfew lifted in Niamey
5/13/2020 6:33 PM

"The government, on the proposal of the religious leaders, after consulting the COVID-19 Committee of Experts and in view of the favorable trend in the development of the disease at COVID-19, decides to reopen places of worship from Wednesday May 13, "the government announced in a statement read on state radio. This measure was eagerly awaited, when the government had already lightened measures for Ramadan. The government also announced "the lifting of the curfew in Niamey from May 13, 2020".

The government asks the "religious leaders to require the faithful" that they observe "the minimum barrier measures", in particular the washing of hands with soap or hydro-alcoholic gel, the disinfection of places of worship before each prayer, the wearing of a mask and respect for the physical distance of at least one meter. "In case of deterioration of the situation in connection with the reopening of places of worship, the government reserves the right to reconsider this decision", warns the press release.

At the end of March, Niamey was shaken by riots against the measure and the ban on collective prayers. The police had arrested nearly 300 suspected rioters during the violence between April 17 and 21, according to the police. After these riots and before the start of Ramadan, the authorities had reduced the curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. instead of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Niger records 854 cases of coronavirus including 47 deaths, according to a report Tuesday evening May 12. In addition to the coronavirus pandemic, Niger has been facing violence from jihadist groups for several years, which has hit the entire Sahel region.

Covid 19: 3 new cases discovered in Maradi
Submitted by ANP on Thu, 05/14/2020 - 10:35
By Nigerian Press Agency
May 14, 2020

Maradi, May 14 (ANP) - Three cases of patients with Covid's disease 19 were discovered in Maradi, the region's governor said on Wednesday at the weekly meeting of the regional disease monitoring committee.
According to the Governor of the Maradi Region Mr. Zakari Oumarou, two cases come from Dan Issa and Madarounfa respectively, while the third is from Maradi but having made a trip to Nigeria.
Faced with these cases imported from the south of our borders, the governor sounded the alarm. "We ask our compatriots in border villages, and those who operate in the Nigerian states to be very careful," he asked. What is most intriguing is that it happened when our borders are closed on both sides. He welcomed the reopening of places of worship, proof that the pandemic has substantially declined.
Governor Zakari Oumarou reminded respect for the various measures taken by our authorities and to avoid shaking hands at the level of the mosque. He also announced that an order for one (1) million masks has been launched and the sale of these masks will be made in pharmacies (100 FCFA) as well as in other points to allow accessibility.
The COVID 19 regional follow-up committee for the Maradi region received several donations during this meeting. Thus the ROTARY Club of Maradi provided gloves and masks, the Minister Kassoum Mocktar provided 9 thermal thermometers for the control of the temperature of the population; WHO has provided beds, mattresses and is committed to the fight against, Malaria and cholera. Save The Children provided hand washing kits, gels, bleach. Ditto for PHRASEA, the Rural Hydraulic Program supporting the water and sanitation sector.
Niger records more than 860 cases with Covid 19 as of Wednesday May 13, 2020.

COVID-19: In Niger, slight upward trend linked to its strong progress in the regions (INS)
Submitted by ANP on Tue, 19/05/2020 - 10:51
By Nigerian Press Agency
May 19, 2020

NIAMEY, May 19 (ANP) - In Niger, the curve of new cases of COVID-19 shows a slightly increasing trend, since May 1, 2020, due to the strong progression of the pandemic inside the country, particularly in the regions of Zinder and Agadez, and to a lesser extent in the regions of Tahoua and Dosso, learned the ANP in a technical note from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) dated May 18 2020.
In this document which traces the evolution of the statistical situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is noted that among the new positive cases declared between May 14 and 17, 2020, twelve (12) cases are from the city of Niamey , nine (9) cases are from the Zinder region, three (3) cases are from the Agadez region, two (2) cases are from the Tahoua region. The Dosso and Maradi regions each recorded one (1) case.
Since that date, the INS noted, almost 6 in 10 new cases have come from the Zinder (41%) and Agadez (17%) regions. However, it says, the Niamey region, with 54.4 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants, remains the region most affected by the pandemic, followed by Agadez (5.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Zinder (2.2 per 100,000 inhabitants), Diffa (0.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Dosso (0.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and Tahoua (0.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
On the other hand, the regions of Tillab?ry and Maradi are the least affected, with 0.14 and 0.15 cases per 100,000 inhabitants respectively.
On average, as of May 17, 2020, nearly 4 people per 100,000 inhabitants were infected with COVID-19 in Niger, informs the INS, according to which, "the relaxation of the measures taken to contain the pandemic of the COVID-19 in Niger, in particular the lifting of the curfew in Niamey, the sanitary isolation of the city of Niamey, the liberation of inter-urban passenger transport activities, the reopening of places of worship, schools and establishments scheduled for June 1, 2020, could be major challenges for all teams in charge of the fight against COVID-19 ”.
Also, the National Institute of Statistics suggests to the Interministerial Committee for the fight against the pandemic of COVID-19, among others, to make the wearing of masks compulsory for the personnel of transport companies as well as their passengers, staff of schools and educational establishments, staff of public and private health structures, staff of the main service providers (petrol stations, banks, etc.).
It also recommends considering unannounced checks, by health teams, in schools, in public, parapublic and private administrations, in the main public places (transport companies, auto-stations, markets and large shops), in buses and passenger transport vehicles, with a view to ensuring compliance with the barrier measures decreed by the Government (social distancing, hygiene, wearing masks, etc.).
In Niger, we note, as of May 18, 2020, according to statistical data published by the Ministry of Public Health, the total number of people tested positive for COVID-19 is 909 cases, for 714 cured and 55 deaths. Worldwide, as of May 17, 2020, according to statistics released by Johns Hopkins University, 4,713,620 people have tested positive for COVID-19; 315,185 cases of death were counted; whereas 1,733. 963 cases of healings were recorded.
