STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The first case of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on Staten Island was confirmed Monday, according to an internal Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) memo obtained by the Advance/SiLive.com...

...A source with knowledge of the case said the individual is an adult patient who came into the hospital exhibiting symptoms over the weekend.

The patient was sent home, according to the source, and results came back on Monday testing positive for the coronavirus...

...Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced plans to enforce a "containment area" for a 1-mile radius around the center of the cluster, an area that includes much of the city of New Rochelle and stretches into town of Eastchester, both of which are in Westchester County.

Any large gathering places within that containment area will be required to shut down from Thursday through March 25, Cuomo said. That includes several of New Rochelle's public schools. Those that fall within the containment zone will remain shut down for two weeks...

...In the email sent to members, VENT Fitness management confirmed that the two people, who were diagnosed on March 7, one a 57-year-old pharmacist and one is a 52-year old woman, were both at the gym on March 5.

The email continued to say that the Saratoga Department of Health contacted VENT Fitness on March 9 to inform the gym of a potential exposure at the Clifton Park location. Saratoga County DOH, continued the email, “determined a group that attended a specific class were most at risk and are contacting this group of individuals directly to determine next steps.”...

...The two latest Suffolk cases are men who live in the Town of Brookhaven, one in his late 30s and the other in his early 30s, Bellone said at a news conference.

Both men are in isolation at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Suffolk also has eight people under mandatory quarantine, including one of the six confirmed cases, a female resident from the Town of Southold in her early 20s, Bellone said.

All of the confirmed cases are due to "community transmission," not travel overseas, Bellone said...

Mayor de Blasio said the city is preparing unprecedented measures to contain the coronavirus by limiting public gatherings — including possibly closing Broadway — as nine new cases bumped the Big Apple’s tally to 62, he said Thursday.

“We’re going to have to introduce more and more restrictions, which we’re certainly going to be doing in New York City today and tomorrow,” he said on CNN. There are nine new coronavirus cases in the city since Wednesday...

Coronavirus is closing the curtain on Broadway, at least for a while, as New York state prepares to ban gatherings of 500 people or more in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Smaller events will be required to reduce the number of people in attendance.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the strict new measures in a press conference Thursday, as the number of confirmed cases in the state shot up once again. New York has 328 confirmed cases as of Thursday, up from 216 the day before, including 95 cases in New York City. It has the second-highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States, behind only Washington state...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency in New York City Thursday afternoon.

The move comes after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a statewide ban on gatherings of more than 500 people, along with additional measures to combat the continued spread of the coronavirus.

De Blasio said under a state of emergency, he has the authority to potentially establish a curfew, shut down traffic in or out of parts of the city, shut down mass transit, ration supplies and more. He emphasized none of those things are being enacted, but they are examples of things that are allowable under the state of emergency.

Large venues like Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center will be likely be closed for months, de Blasio said. However, New York City public schools will remain open....

...De Blasio estimated the fight against coronavirus will be a six-month process while emphasizing that no one knows for sure. ...
De Blasio said he anticipates New York City will be at 1,000 cases sometime next week...

UNITED NATIONS: A diplomat from the Philippines mission to the United Nations tested positive for Covid-19 coronavirus on Thursday, according to a note sent to UN missions, making the woman the first known case at the world body’s New York headquarters.

“As of today, the Philippine Mission is in lockdown, and all personnel are instructed to self-quarantine and to seek medical attention should they develop the symptoms. We are assuming that all of us have been infected,” wrote Philippines acting UN Ambassador Kira Azucena in a message seen by Reuters...

First coronavirus-related death confirmed in New York State

ALBANY — Coronavirus has claimed its first life in New York.

A woman with underlying respiratory issues died in a New York City hospital, Gov. Cuomo announced this morning.

“We had last night a death in a New York City hospital of an 82-year-old woman who had coronavirus. She came into the hospital on March 3,” he said. “She contracted the coronavirus on top of emphysema, then she passed.”

Rockland County man reported as second coronavirus death in New York state

A 65-year-old Rockland County man is the second coronavirus fatality in New York state, The Post has learned.

The victim died earlier this week in the Village of Suffern and has posthumously tested positive for the deadly virus, sources said.

Cases of COVID-19 in New York State have increased to 613, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said during a Saturday evening conference call. Up nearly 100 from this afternoon when he announced 524.
