New Yorkers should assume they’ve been exposed to coronavirus: officials
By Lee Brown and Julia Marsh

New York officials have effectively stopped trying to trace COVID-19 cases — saying everyone should assume they have already come into contact with the potentially deadly virus, according to an alarming report.

Diplomats in the city were given the startling warning in a briefing Saturday afternoon by a team of New York officials led by commissioner Penny Abeywardena in the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, according to a read-out of the call seen by Foreign Policy.

They stated that the virus is likely so wide-spread that tracing the number of infections is redundant — while warning that the city could be hurt until at least late fall, according to the report.

“Everyone in New York should assume that they have been in contact with COVID 19,” a read-out at the conference call said, according to Foreign Policy...

By Julia Marsh
March 15, 2020 | 10:29am

New York City’s coronavirus cases have skyrocketed in less than a week from 25 on Monday to 269 Sunday as Mayor Bill de Blasio considers locking down the Big Apple to contain the outbreak.

“Every option is on the table in a crisis,” de Blasio said Sunday morning on CNN.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” he said.

De Blasio expects the city’s coronavirus tally to rise to 1,000 in the next few days.

“It’s changing every hour so we’re going to constantly make new decisions,” de Blasio said about the dynamic public health emergency....

So many people are hurting right now. Sick and frightened coronavirus patients are hurting the most, but there are so many other categories of people who are stressed and struggling with this unprecedented "pause" of American life.

So Saturday's edition of the "Reliable Sources" newsletter focuses on the media world, with some of the emerging solutions and work-arounds.

The physical and emotional and financial tolls of this crisis are staggering. But there are creative ways to relieve anxiety; to connect with each other; and to squeeze some good out of this rotten situation. Here are some examples:

-- With public events called off, the Seattle Symphony is organizing "free livestreams and rebroadcasts until the orchestra can return" to the stage.

-- In New York, the Metropolitan Opera is offering "Nightly Met Opera Streams" from its catalog of past events.

-- Broadway legend Laura Benanti tweeted Friday: "Dark times for all. Trying to find some bright spots. If you were meant to perform in your High School musical and it was cancelled please post yourself singing and tag me. I want to be your audience!" The responses have been outstanding...

New York has 53,000 hospital beds and 3,000 ICU beds, far short of what state health officials are predicting will be needed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

The COVID-19 outbreak in New York state has spread to about 1,700 people, hospitalizing 19% of them and killing at least 12, state officials announced Tuesday.

They said the number of cases will continue to rise as the state receives more test results.
