Bird flu outbreak reported in Lhasa(China Daily)

The Ministry of Agriculture yesterday confirmed a new outbreak of bird flu in Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet autonomous region.

The national bird flu laboratory said the H5N1 virus was found in poultry sold at a wholesale market in Chengguan district of Lhasa on April 12.

Emergency measures have been taken and the epidemic has been brought under control, the ministry said in a brief notice, and 1,679 fowl were culled after the outbreak.

According to the local health department, no illness was detected among people in contact with the poultry, the ministry said.

Nepal bans Indian horse-cart fearing flu infection in horses

Kathmandu , May 22 Nepalese authorities restricted Indian horse-cart to enter the country after a horse reportedly died today due to Swine flu after it travelled to the country crossing the Banbasa-Gaddachauki border in Kanchanpur district of western Nepal.

A horse pulling the cart died in the border area and the local authorities suspected that it might have been the victim of swine flu, said state run Nepal Radio.

The low-cost horsecart (tanga) is a popular means of transport for the people in the area.

Locals have been panicked by the death of the animal, the radio said. However, no human case of swine flu has been found in the country so far.

A diarrheal outbreak has hit the exact same village (Gumda) as the "viral pneumonia" outbreak in this thread from last year. The link is below.

Notably, the new outbreak contains the line that "13 people died of diarrhea in this village last year". It is possible that the viral pneumonia was an incorrect report. It is also possible the reported this time is misspeaking (and means to say that diarrhea now has hit the village where 13 people died from flu last year), as another article in the new outbreak indicates that 23 people died of diarrhea in that village last year.

Personally, I had suspected seasonal flu in a vulnerable population for this outbreak, as I remember reading an article or thread of a contact of one of these cases taking ill in China, being isolated as suspect H1N1, and testing positive for H3N2 instead. I can't find that thread now. Perhaps it was not on FT.
