Three kids in south Nepal die of unknown disease

KATHMANDU, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Three children died of an unidentified disease in south Nepal, Nepali national news agency RSS reported on Monday.

According to the report, at Khutta Piparadi in Mohattari district, some 130 km south of capital Kathmandu, the deceased are five-year boy Rahmat Nadaf, four-year boy Kamarul Nadaf and four-year girl Jamila Nadaf.


It is learnt that the children succumbed to the unknown disease after suddenly feeling uneasiness in their eyes.


Rahmad Nadaf died in his home while the other two died when undergoing treatment at local hospital.


Dozens of villagers have fallen ill due to the mysterious disease. Among the ill, eight have been admitted to the hospital. The ill patients have manifested the symptoms of difficulty in speech.


The District Health Office of Mohattari has said that a team of health workers has been dispatched to the disease-hit site for investigation.

Kathmandu, May 7 (IANS) A medical team that rushed to a remote village in western Nepal after a mystery disease killed 13 people in less than a fortnight Wednesday ruled out an outbreak of swine flu and attributed the deaths to a viral attack.
Over 40 more people in Gumla village in Gorkha district, the place from where deposed king Gyanendra?s ancestors had hailed, were being treated after they complained of headache, cough, sore throat and fever.

On Wednesday alone, three villagers had died, creating panic in the area.

However, Gunaraj Lohani, a doctor leading the medical team to the remote village, said the deaths were not due to swine flu but viral infection.

Nepal became concerned about swine flu after suffering an outbreak of bird flu in its eastern district Jhapa neighbouring India, which caused thousands of birds to be culled this year and triggered a shortage of chicken.

After an outbreak of swine flu, caused by influenza A (H1N1) virus, hit Mexico, killing over 40 people, the Nepal government ordered screening measures for visitors arriving at the Tribhuvan International Airport, the Himalayan republic?s sole international airport.

Mystery disease found to be viral fever

POKHARA, May 7: The mystery illness that claimed 13 lives in Gumda, Gorkha has been diagnosed to be viral fever by a medical team that flew into the village Thursday.

The team that included Health Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel and District Public Health Chief Dr Gunaraj Lohani treated around 70 suffering from viral fever, seven of whom are serious, in the village.

The mystery illness had killed 13 including four children in Gumda-1, 2 and 3 over the last fortnight. The medical team including Lohani has been instructed to stay in the village till the disease is controlled by the minister who flew to Kathmandu in the afternoon

People in a remote village of Gorkha have started panicking after at least a dozen people died due to an unidentified disease over the past two weeks.

The disease-that starts with common syndromes like headache, fever and cough- claimed three additional lives Wednesday alone taking the death toll to 13. Victims died hours after they showed such symptoms, reports say.

The District Health Office has prepared to send a team of medical professionals to take the disease in control. The DHO said it could not respond it time as it got information very late.

GORKHA: More than 50 per cent of the students living in a hostel of Manakamana Deaf Secondary School at Taksar in Gorkha-8 are suffering from pneumonia. Over 40 students are suffering from the disease while condition of eight students is reported to be critical, a school source said.

According to Khadananda Regmi, chairman of the school management committee, the number of students suffering from the disease was increasing everyday while more and more students were showing symptoms of the disease of headache, fever and vomiting.
The students suffering from the disease are undergoing treatment in the hostel with the help of the staffers from the district public health office.

The school is running classes up to Grade IX and 80 deaf students from several districts are living in the school hostel, the school source said.

GORKHA: The mystery disease that triggered panic in remote Gumda VDC for the past two weeks has been identified. Health Minister Giriraj Mani Pokhrel arrived here on Thursday along with a team of officials. He announced that Post Viral Pneumonia led to the death of 13 villagers. Dr Gunaraj Lohani, chief, district health and medical superintendent, said that so far around 100 patients had been treated for the outbreak. A majority of the patients is children. Gumda VDC is located around 75 km from district headquarters. The disease is spreading to adjoining Uhiya VDC as well.

I think it was about three years ago we saw something similar in approx. the same area. Turned out to be a viral meningitis doctors told us. It was also at the same time and under the flight path of the infected geese migrating out of China. I am sure that was happenstance but I just never forgot it.

Police Ill Due To Food Poisoning At Airport

KATHMANDU, May 13 (Bernama) -- A total of 40 police personnel entrusted with guarding Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Nepali capital Kathmandu fell ill en masse due to food poisoning, China's Xinhua news agency quoted The Himalayan Times daily's report Wednesday.

According to Dr Gajananda P Bhandari, epidemiologist and coordinator of Special Health Desk set up at TIA, the police personnel were immediately referred to Nepal Police Hospital on Tuesday after they complained of diarrhoea, fever and nausea and their condition deteriorated.

"All the police personnel used to share a cafeteria. Probably, they had eaten pumpkin curry and pickle of radish and potato unfit for human consumption which caused them food poisoning," Bhandari was quoted by the daily as saying.

He further explained that they were confirmed to be suffered from dysentery after laboratory test of their stool.

He urged the general public not to confuse the dysentery with flu virus A/H1N1. "I would like to urge the public not to panic as we have succeeded in reining the outbreak of dysentery", said Dr Bhandari.

"35 out of 40 police personnel rushed to hospital have been discharged after providing needful medications and five of them are still lying in bed. They have yet to contain the fever and dehydration," he said adding that it was also a water-borne disease in the summertime.

At least 323 police personnel are guarding the country's only international airport. Health officials have intensified their vigil at the airport to prevent further outbreak of communicable disease.

According to the daily, the Ministry of Health and Population has taken further measures to thwart the possible spread of the A/ H1N1 flu virus.

Which virus?

No pun intended, but at the top of the 'pecking order' for virual disease in this location to be ruled in or out - should be H5N1 - not H1N1!

We also need to remember - that this area is not the most reliable - as to accuracte intelligence, and reporting.
