The two above graphs suggest something strange or not?

Where Influenza B and A (H3) dominated the season, an upsurge in H1N1 (2009) cases has been seen later.

Conversely, where H1N1 (2009) and B prevailed, later H3 dominates.

It is understandable because of different age groups are affected by H1N1 (2009) and A(H3N2) viruses.

Personally, I think that given the other articles, this is just a typo and the word "dengue" should have been H1N1, as no other source has reported any dengue cases in conjunction with the outbreak (and dengue does not by itself cause atypical pneumonia), but H1N1/dengue coinfections have been reported elsewhere in the world and might explain the severity reported here.

I don't think dengue has anything to do with this.

It would be quite a coincidence if all six had co-infections with dengue. Frankly, I think we are dealing with a mutated influenza A related to pH1N1 but different enough that Mexico had trouble diagnosing it and reported the cases as atypical pneumonia. Since there is no indication of widespread increases in ILI or mild flu cases, this could be a dangerous virus.

Also, if you look at data from Texas, something doesn't add up. Out of 13 total pediatric deaths in Texas this season, 12 have occurred since January. Of the 13, two were diagnosed as Flu B, two as H3N2, three as pH1N1, and five as unsubtyped influenza A. In addition, there was the boy from Texas who died in a Shreveport, LA hospital from pH1N1. So, that's a total of 14 pediatric deaths, which is nearly one-third the number recorded during the 2009-10 flu season in Texas and is by far the most pediatric deaths in the U.S. I find it very unusual that half of the influenza A deaths were not subtyped and wonder if they didn't bother or the samples could not be subtyped.

Now, at least one of the recent severe cases in Mexico claims to have caught the virus while in Texas. And, now they have a virus in the border state with Texas where six transit workers got sick over a short time period. They could not diagnose the first death and called it atypical pneumonia. His work partner got it and died as well and it was diagnosed as pH1N1. A third person in the same location has died and I believe that at least one of the other three has been hospitalized. And, this is all at the end of the flu season.

This could be serious.

Can you show me any confirmation that a third person in that station has died?

I have seen reports of three additional illnesses confirmed as H1N1, one of which is severe, but I haven't seen a third fatality. My tally on that police station is four confirmed cases (including one confirmed fatality, and one additional severe confirmed case) plus the original unconfirmed fatality. And no reports of any significant illness in a non-police contact (spouse, HCW, etc.) of those cases.

Only time (and maybe eventually sequences?) will tell what has happened.

He said people confirmed, six are in stable clinical condition, one in serious condition and six people have died. Of those confirmed, seven are in hospital and 13 more convalescing at home.

H1N1 (2009) is a readily transmissible influenza virus and it is capable to spread quickly among communities.

Further, it is to keep into mind that a substantial portion of population has not immunity against it - despite two year of circulation, as demonstrated by northern hemisphere winter outbreaks, especially in North-West of European Region, with an amount of severe and fatal cases in young otherwise healthy adult.

I tend to agree with you, IOH, and that seems to be the point that many are missing. In 2009, Mexico confirmed very few H1N1 cases. I believe the total number of confirmed H1N1 cases in most Mexican states was just a few dozen. It wouldn't surprise me if there were 100, 1000, or even 10,000 unreported cases for each confirmed case in 2009. The same thing may be occurring here (although the clustering of two fatalitites and an additional severe case in Oriental Station still might need an explanation).

Chihuahua, 5 Apr. (Notimex) .- The state Health Department reported that the number of patients by influenza virus A (H1N1) grew to 39, after the latest report from the state hospitals.

The head of the agency, Sergio Pi?a Marshall, explained that the number of cases confirmed as positive for influenza A (H1N1) is 39 in the period from March 22 to April 5.

He said that of those confirmed, seven are in stable clinical condition, three in serious condition and six people have died. Also, 10 are hospitalized and 23 more convalescing at home.

He noted that seven deaths have been subjected to laboratory studies. Of them exists only official confirmation of the presence of influenza A (H1N1) in six and one is discarded. The deaths occurred in Ciudad Ju?rez and Chihuahua.

He added that the confirmed cases of influenza, by age group, three corresponding to the range of 5 to 14 years, five to 15 to 24 years, 19 to group 25 to 44, 11 more at an age ranging between 45 and 64 and one 65 years.

He said that those confirmed, 21 have been reported by hospitals in the Health Services Chihuahua, four hospitals belonging to the Chihuahua Institute of Health, one who answered the ISSSTE, IMSS nine and four in private practice.

He added that town, people confirmed influenza A (H1N1) occurred, 17 in Chihuahua and 22 in Ciudad Ju?rez.
