Deputy Minister of Health, Iraj Hariri, denied these statements, Monday, and promised to resign if these figures were confirmed, before he announced yesterday (Tuesday), that he had been infected, and government spokesman Ali Rabei was waiting, for his part, as a result of his tests.

Since the announcement on February 19 of the first two cases of infection in Qom, central Iran, and receiving visitors from all over the world, the government promised to be more transparent after accusing it of reducing the outcome of the epidemic on its soil and mismanaging the spread of infection.

Right now in Iran we are facing a coronavirus epidemic,” said a senior medical doctor at the Masih Daneshvari hospital in Tehran, the country’s top pulmonary public hospital and the main facility overseeing coronavirus patients...

Political prisoners and prisoners of conscience have been transferred to the workers’ ward and their ward has been turned into the quarantine for prisoners who are suspected of contracting the Coronavirus. It appears that the close proximity of this ward to the prison’s dispensary has been the reason for this decision.

He said in an exclusive interview with IRNA on Thursday: "Contrary to rumors, the result of my coronary test was negative.

Amirabadi Farahani also criticized some MPs, saying: "Contrary to my rumors, I am in good health and I reject all the issues raised."

Speaking today in Parliament, Abolfazl Hassan Beigi said: "Some MPs were finally infected with Corona, and Mr. Amir Abadi is very bad. The agent's remarks were echoed in the cyberspace, and many of the group and its telegraph channels responded.

Hojat al-Islam Mojtaba Zulnour, another member of the Qom parliament, said this morning that he was suffering from coronary artery disease.

Why has this thread title said 50+ dead in Qom for days when the latest WHO situation report says 15 for the whole country? It seems to have been based on one politician, who is nothing to do with the health department, and is very unlikely to have accurate information. I do not think FluTrackers should be using this kind of speculation as of any more value than some of the lunatic speculation on Twitter, at least if we want to be accepted as reliable apolitical source of information.
I (personal opinion) do not think the Iranian authorities have much of a clue as to what is going on. I think they are truthfully publishing the hard data they have but do not have China's ability to run 50,000 PCR test per day. They are playing catch-up and the death toll would imply far more cases than those that have been found. The Qom politician may have been correct but it was only a guess and it would be a very slippery slope if we start using unofficial sources from some countries, just because we don't like them much, will we take US and UK statements at face value and if so why?
