Iran - Covid-19: 397,801 cases; 22,913 deaths - August BBC investigation says 451,025 cases, 42,000 deaths

SO, am I looking at this wrong? In Shilo's post (#38), 'official' deaths reported are (5) ... but in Kiwi's post (#37), an unconfirmed audio is stating (20) deaths in just a single hospital. Are we looking at another China, with questionable stats? (which, of course, wouldn't be surprising for Iran)

I don't think much would surprise me about any governments reaction to this crisis. I think the less prepared countries are the more they panic (and in some instances this would appear to be exhibited by complete inertia and feeding their citizens information that would appear to be statistically impossible.) If Sharon has no idea about what is going on in Iran then we have no chance of knowing.

The stats are questionable. Yesterday, there was an election in Iran...maybe 25% turnout due to most of the population boycotting it....a good thing in light of the cases there. Qom is a religious center, thus draws pilgrims from all over the country and elsewhere, which is likely contributing to the spread. Seems like all info is being channeled via the govt. newspaper and the Minister of Health. Dissident organizations are the other source of info. All sides have an agenda. The fact that Iranians, who test positive, are being found in Canada and elsewhere, suggest that it might be a widespread problem.

Iranian Doctors Call For 'Long Holiday' To Contain Coronavirus, As Sixth Victim Dies
51 minutes ago
Radio Farda

A group of doctors from various universities of Tehran has called on the government to shut down all schools, universities, theaters and cinemas, stadiums and other public places until after Nowrouz (New Year) holidays to contain the coronavirus outbreak and prevent the virus from spreading.

Nowrouz is celebrated on March 21 and public holidays last through March 24, with schools closed for thirteen days.

Meanwhile, on Saturday evening residents of Talesh, a city in Gilan Province where a hospital has been designated to quarantine coronavirus patients, protested against officials demanding that the patients be transferred elsewhere. Riot police clashed with protesters and fired tear gas to disperse protesters. Casualties or arrests have not been reported yet.

A citizen-reporter has sent a video of the protest in Talesh to a journalist abroad. According to him protesters are worried about the spread of the virus to the residents and angry because authorities transferred coronavirus patients to the hospital secretly without any prior announcement...

Tehran City Council In Limbo After District Mayor Diagnosed With Coronavirus
February 22, 2020
Radio Farda

The meetings of Tehran City Council may be cancelled after the mayor of one Tehran's 22 districts was diagnosed with coronavirus on Saturday.

The Mayor of District 13 of Tehran, Mojtaba Rahmanzadeh, already had meetings with several officials, including the Chairman of the Council Mohsen Hashemi, in the past few days before testing positive for the virus.

In a tweet on Saturday Hashemi said he was staying home and was going to go to hospital to be tested although he does not have any symptoms of coronavirus infection. Other members of the Council will also be tested for the virus, he said in his tweet...

Coronavirus: Iran registers the highest number of deaths in a country outside the Far East

AFP / ATTA KENARE
22FEB2020

Iran announced on Saturday the closure of schools, educational centers, universities and cultural centers, particularly in Tehran, as a precaution against the new coronavirus, which has already killed five people in the Islamic Republic, the highest number of deaths recorded in a country outside the Far East.

Schools, educational centers and universities will be closed in 14 provinces across the country from Sunday, state television said, citing a "preventive measure".

These establishments will notably be closed in Tehran and Qom, the city where the first two cases of Covid-19, who have since died, have been recorded. "We are on the front lines, we need help," implored the dean of the University of Medical Sciences at Qom on television.

The government has also announced that "all artistic events" and screenings of "movies in theaters across the country have been canceled until the end of the week", in order to stop the spread of the virus.

These decisions come a few hours after the authorities announced a fifth death from the new coronavirus, as well as 10 new cases, bringing the total number of infected people in the Islamic Republic to 28.

"We have ten new confirmed cases of Covid-19," health ministry spokesman Kianouche Jahanpour said on state television on Saturday.

"One of the 10 infected people unfortunately died," he added.

Mr. Jahanpour did not specify the nationality of the five deceased people.

...
The Covid-19 virus was first reported in Iran on Wednesday, when authorities announced the first two illness-related deaths of elderly Iranians from the city of Qom, 150 kilometers south of Tehran.

These were the first confirmed deaths from this disease in the Middle East.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the speed at which the virus has spread in Iran and its spread from the Islamic Republic to other countries including Lebanon.

"The concern is (...) that we have seen an increase in cases, a very rapid increase in a few days," said Sylvie Briand, director of the Global Preparedness for Infectious Risks department at WHO.

"We also wonder about the potential risk of more exported cases in the coming days," she added.

- 75,000 masks sold -

According to Jahanpour, Iran has tested 785 suspected cases since the country's first infections.

"Most of the cases are either residents of Qom" or people who have stayed there, he said.

The holy city of Qom welcomes a large number of students to its seminars and also attracts pilgrims.

The Iranian authorities' announcements come the day after the parliamentary elections.

The disease has not dampened "the revolutionary zeal of the residents of Qom" who went to the polls, welcomed the official media.

The Iranians, however, tore off the surgical protective masks to avoid being contaminated. The online sales site Digikala - Iran's equivalent of Amazon - indicated on Twitter on Friday that it had sold 75,000 masks in 36 hours.

No commission is applied on sales of masks, he said, while concerns about a surge in prices on the black market are growing.

"Despite the high demand we oppose the unusual price increase," said Digikala.

- "The epidemic has started" -

Authorities have yet to confirm the source of the virus in the country, but an official in the health ministry said the Covid-19 may have been imported by Chinese workers.

"The coronavirus epidemic has started in the country," said an infectious disease committee chief Minoo Mohraz on Friday, quoted by the official agency Irna.

"Since the people infected in Qom did not have contact with the Chinese (...) the source is probably Chinese workers who work in Qom and who have traveled to China," she added.

However, the authorities have presented no evidence to support this hypothesis, which has not been reported by any other Iranian media.

On Thursday, Iraq, a neighbor worried about the first deaths in Iran due to the new coronavirus, prohibited "until further notice" the Iranians from entering its soil and its nationals from going to the Islamic Republic.

Kuwait Airways, the national airline of Kuwait, also announced that it would suspend all its flights to Iran.

Some private hospitals are preventing medical staff from using special coverage to combat corona

Mohammad Sharifi-Moghaddam (Secretary-General of Nursing), speaking to Ilna, spoke about nurses' need for high safety equipment in hospitals due to the coronary heart disease virus. To be high.

"The dimensions of the corona virus are still unknown, but what is known is the longevity of the virus outside the human body," he said. If the virus cannot be disrupted by the transmission cycle, the virus will be transmitted. In this case, the desk, the bus, the money, the computer, etc. will be the cause of the transmission of the virus. This depends on people's awareness of the severity of the disease in the country and the transmission cycle of the disease. Nurses or health care staff also need to have adequate supplies as people who are closest and most likely to face this cycle.

Sharifi Moghadam, in answer to the question of what equipment does this high security or safety clothing include? He replied: The whole body of a person must be covered, meaning shoes, special clothing, hats, glasses, masks and gloves. Of course, nurses in areas such as Qom have the prevalence of this equipment, but our concern is in hospitals where the patient is suspected or carriers and their incidence has not been determined.

"The patient has a fever or flu symptoms, but no special action is taken until he is suspected," he said. This is the most important concern for us and the treatment staff until the diagnosis, as our nurse goes to the patient's bed without the necessary facilities.

Commenting on some of the private hospitals that do not want to use masks, Sharifi Moghadam said: Some private hospitals do not allow their staff to use clothing and cover because they are afraid, if the hospital is suspected, other patients will be referred. Diminish them.

[h=2]The Minister of Health announced:[/h] [h=1]Distribution of masks and disinfectants among Qom families / Distributed at bus stops and subway masks free of charge / 'Chinese carriers' are the source of Corona outbreaks in Iran[/h] Saeed Nemki said after the end of Corona's technical and executive staff, "We have established a permanent staff as Corona's technical and enforcement staff, which includes all senior health and treatment executives and medical system training and related devices." There are executives.

He continued: "In this headquarters we look at the affairs of the whole country, we follow the bylaws and all that is needed in this headquarters. We also look at the problems and plans of our staff and colleagues at this campaign.

Referring to the establishment of the Corona Anti-Personnel Executive, the Minister of Health stated: "We have another Corona Anti-Personnel Executive formed by the President's order and the responsibility of this staff is with my servant and his secretary with one of my servants." We also submitted a report at a meeting of the National Security Council, where it was requested to impose some restrictions on access to some of the crowded spaces, with the council having an option to delegate the state executive's staff to the council. Some respected ministers, including the head of the judiciary, as well as the chief of staff of the armed forces, take action and take action as necessary.

"We were worried about the masks and detergents because we were likely to lack supplies due to overcrowding and inaccurate dealers whose bread was in trouble," he said. Let's go. But we've been thinking about it for a long time, and we've got enough masks and disinfectants.

Salt said: I send this message to the honorable people of Qom and provide and distribute to all Qumis families until the end of the night a pack of masks and disinfectants and educational brochures.

The Minister of Health also emphasized: From today on, we distribute the mask for free at bus and subway stations. During our meetings with the municipality and subway officials, disinfection of buses and subways is carried out. We also give people a free mask at the subway entrances.

He continued: The hospitals of the entire provinces are ready to treat patients, we also gather them all in one place due to the lack of patients in different hospitals and transfer the cases that were reported in different hospitals to the special hospitals that we have deployed. we do.

He emphasized: According to what I have just said, the vain terror that is created in people is false, and I tell people as a veteran health expert that coronary heart disease is far less likely to have both deaths and its pathogenicity than the flu. . In the United States, they have reported that 280,000 have been hospitalized for influenza b, and an estimated 16,000 have been killed in the United States.

Salt pointed out: We are currently at the peak of type B flu and the winter peak is in H1n1 flu, which was also reported in the fall, with our mortality rates well below our expectations.

"One thing in our people's minds about where the virus came from is the new coronary virus that was rife in China," he said of the corona virus originating in the country. The virus has been transmitted to us from carriers from China. Unfortunately, one of our fatalities was in Qom, a business that had traveled during the same period of pollution from indirect flights to China.

The Minister of Health pointed out that since 7 Bahman, when we had stopped my direct flights from China with the support of the government and with the support of the government, we had non-interstate flights. These measures had never been carried out in Turkey and the UAE, and they had not set up such surveillance stations.

"I also have to say that the information we tell people is transparent, up-to-date, and people don't trust other information. It may be a cold-sick hospital, but not all of them have coronary disease," said Salt. My colleagues will test suspected patients on two or three occasions and let people know if they are sure.

"When we had a problem with the kits, we had designed the diagnostic method at our Pasteur Institute," he said.

"The transparency of our information system is excellent," he said. I just received a news story about coronary artery disease from South Korea, when 9 South Korean travelers in the occupied territories returned to their country but returned to their home country and reported that they had no cases to date. We have the best health infrastructure.

He also stressed that people should pay close attention to health issues and avoid touching and touching. I beg the people of Qom to refrain from traveling to other cities. We believe our people are understanding We are investigating from various places we find that the cases that are positive are mostly of Qum origin and we urge the people of Qom to observe this. Prevention is the best way to fight the disease Again, I urge people not to pay attention to the news other than the news they've received from my fellow contributors.

A member of the Majlis Health Commission stressed the need for greater coordination of government agencies with the Ministry of Health.

Semnan People's Representative Ahmad Hemmati and a member of the Majlis Health Commission in an interview with Ilna correspondent, in response to the question whether quarantine cities where the coronavirus is widespread are on the agenda or do they insist on this? He said that in this regard every institution should perform its duties. This is not enforced by bidding. The Ministry of Health has a specific task, but other agencies also have a duty to cooperate with the Ministry of Health.

He added: "If the virus has started in Qom, all the machines in that city must work together to prevent the outbreak, so that the virus does not spread from Qom to other cities." Imitation authorities, clergy, government agencies, and the government all have to work together. If anyone or any agency is to exercise its discretion, all Ministry of Health's management, scientific, and bachelor's programs will be ineffective and will be called into question. Apparently this is not coordination and, consequently, the efforts of the Ministry of Health may not work.

Hemmati continued: We cannot continue our plans with the same routine and new actions need to be worked on.

A member of the Majlis Health Commission said that the closure of cities was delegated to the Ministry of Health by the Supreme National Security Council. The Ministry of Health is obliged to make decisive decisions and declare that there is little weakness in this sector.

He added: "There should be no personal comments on the current situation." This is a scientific issue and the ways to control it are clear. Non-biased opinions should not be involved in decision making.

"Unfortunately, there are abuses in these conditions," the MP said. We see examples of hoof masks. The authorities should take serious action in this regard. This is, in addition to the violation, a national security threat in the current situation.

Concerning the possibility of closing schools and universities by the end of the year, Hemmati said: "This is also one of the cases where there is no cooperation. Some schools have closed, some have not. Some one week and some two days. Kids and teens in schools may have less health. The matter must be decided immediately.

As Iran's Coronavirus Death Toll Rises, Neighbors Close Borders, Impose Travel Bans

RFE/RL

Iranian authorities reported two more deaths from the deadly coronavirus, bringing the country's death toll to eight -- the highest such toll outside the disease's epicenter in China.

Speaking February 23 on state TV, Health Ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpur said a total of 15 new confirmed cases had been reported across the country, bringing the overall figure to 43.

Jahanpur gave no details on the new deaths, including when they occurred. But Iranian media earlier cited Abbas Mousavi, the head of the Medical Science University in the northern province of Mazandaran, as saying that an unnamed person who had traveled from the capital, Tehran, to the regional capital of Tonekabon had died.

Iran has reported more fatalities from coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19, than any other country aside from China. In all, there are 785 suspected cases across Iran, the Health Ministry reported on February 22 -- a number is likely to grow.

Jahanpour earlier was quoted by the DPA news agency as saying that of the newly detected cases, two were in Tehran, and eight were in the city of Qom, 120 kilometers south of Tehran...

An official from Qom, Ahmad Amiriabadi Farahani, was quoted in ILNA saying that more than 250 people are in quarantined in the city, which is a popular place of religious study for Shiites from across Iran and other countries.

Coronavirus Kills 12, up to 61 Infected in Iran: Minister
Feb. 24, 2020, at 4:28 a.m.

DUBAI (REUTERS) - Twelve people have died and up to 61 have been infected with the new coronavirus in Iran, Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi said on Monday.

Most of the coronavirus cases have been in Qom, a Shi’ite Muslim holy city 120 km (75 miles) south of the capital Tehran.

A parliamentarian representing Qom, Ahmad Amirabadi Farahani, said on Monday 50 people had died in the city in the past two weeks from coronavirus, noting the government was late in announcing the outbreak and that the city does not have adequate equipment to deal with the health crisis, according to the ILNA news agency.

Harirchi disputed the figure and said in a news conference on state television that if the number of dead in Qom were even one quarter of 50 he would resign.
