Japanese Encephalitis
34 cases 2 fatal 22/07/2014 23/07/2014 Under surveillance
Cases of acute encephalitis reported from multiple PHCs and
Subcentres of District Hailkandi. The affected area is a tribal
area with poor infrastructure. Pig population was also high in
the area. A total of 34 serum samples taken and tested out of
which 04 tested positive for JE by IgM ELISA. Indoor
residual spraying has been done in the area along with the
fogging.
Baksa
Japanese Encephalitis
19 cases 4 fatal 03/01/14 Under surveillance
Cases of acute encephalitis reported from Tamulpur, Musalpur,
Nizkuabaha, Barama, Jalah, Golagaon of District Baksa. District RRT
investigated the outbreak. All age group affected. A total of 36 serum
samples taken and tested at GMCH, Guwahati out of which 17 tested
positive for JE by IgM ELISA. Indoor residual spraying has been done
in the area along with the fogging. IEC done.

Japanese Encephalitis
58 cases 23 fatal 14/02/14 Under surveillance
Cases of acute encephalitis reported from Demow, Gaurisagar, Khelua,
Kaloogaon, Morabazar, Patsaku and Sapekhati. All BPHC of Sivasagar
District affected. All age group affected. A total of 58 serum samples
taken and tested at AMCH, Bibrugarh out of which 24 tested positive for
JE by IgM ELISA. Indoor residual spraying has been done in the area
along with the fogging. IEC done.
Kokrajhar

42 cases 3 fatal 21/06/14 Under Surveillance
Cases of acute encephalitis reported from Balajan, Dotoma, Gossaigaon
and Kokrajhar urban area, District Kokrajhar. All age groups affected. A
total of 42 serum samples taken and tested at Kokrajhar CH & GMCH
Guwahati, out of which 6 tested positive for JE by IgM ELISA. Indoor
residual spraying has been done in the area along with the fogging. IEC
done.
Darang
Japanese Encephalitis
34 cases 9 fatal 01/01/14 Under Surveillance
Cases of acute encephalitis reported from Sipajhar, Jaljali, Patharighat,
Kharupetia BPHC. All BPHC of Darang District affected. All age
groups affected. A total of 34 serum samples taken and tested at GMCH
Guwahati, Out of which 25 tested positive for JE by IgM ELISA.
Indoor residual spraying has been done in the area along with the
fogging. IEC done.

46 cases 5 fatal 04/07/14 Under Surveillance
Cases of acute encephalitis reported from Barapujia, Buragokhain,
Dhing, Dagaon, Singimarir, Jakhalabandha, Samaguri, Jugijan,
Simonabasti, Kathiatoli, Lanka Block PHC District Nagaon. All age
groups affected. A total of 46 serum samples taken and tested at GMCH
Guwahati, out of which 17 tested positive for JE by IgM ELISA. Indoor
residual spraying has been done in the area along with the fogging. IEC
done.

Japanese Encephalitis
2 cases 1 fatal 06/07/2014 Under surveillance
Cases reported from Village Tukunabori, SC Gucharabori, under
Jaluguti of PHC Bhurbandha, Village Dakhin Barsala, SC Nagabandha
PHC Laharighat, District Marigaon. Cases presented with fever,
headache and unconsciousness. A total of 184 blood slides were
examined and all were negative for Malaria. CSF samples tested at
GMCH revealed JE. DDT spray and fogging done in the area. Health
awareness meeting was done in the area.

Cases of acute encephalitis reported from BPHC / SC/ Village
Bandarguri, PHC Bagaribari Panery SD Pachim Panery Udalguri PHC
Rajaghar Barnagaon SC Barnagaon Tangla CHC Tangla Kalaigaon
Kalaigaon, District Udalguri. District team including DSO
Epidemiologist visited the affected area. The affected area has piggery
and a farm. Source of mosquito breeding also present. CSF samples
tested. Fogging done along with Indoor Residual Spraying. Health
education given.

Vadodara

Cases of viral encephalitis reported from various areas of
District Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal and Vadodara.
State RRT investigated the outbreak.
A total of 25 cases and
16 deaths were reported. Cases presented with high grade
fever, diarrhea, vomiting and convulsions. All deaths were
reported in children under 10 years of age. A total of 13
human serum samples dahod (7), kheda (1), panchmahal (1)
and vadodara (2) and 5 CSF samples were tested for
Chandipura Virus by RT PCR and IgM ELISA at NIV Pune.
Out of these samples 3 samples (2 from Panchmahal and 1
from Vadodara) and 1 CSF sample from Vadodara tested
positive for Chandipura virus. All human and animal
samples tested negative for Japanese Encephalitis by IgM
ELISA. Actions taken by the State Active fever surveillance
started in the areas. Referral transport system implemented at
PHC and district level. Vector surveillance activated in the
affected districts, especially for sand fly. Insecticidal dusting
(Malathion 5%) have been carried out on loose soil, cracks /
crevices in and around houses as well as cattle sheds.
Invovlement of animal husbandry department for collection
of animals samples. Group discussions were organized to
strengthen community awareness regarding sanitation and
personal protection measures especially in pediatric age
group.
West Bengal
Jalpaiguri Japanese Encephalitis
71 cases 18 fatal 10/07/2014 Under surveillance
Cases of acute encephalitis reported from District Jalpaiguri. RRT from
all levels visited the area. cases presented with fever and
unconsciousness. Pig rearing is seen in areas from where cases were
reported. A total of 232 serum samples were tested for JE by MAC
Elisa, out of these samples 71 samples were positive for JE. Contact
survey done in cases reporting areas. IEC done, intersectoral
coordination meeting conducted. Fogging started in affected blocks.

7 cases 01 fatal 02/08/14 03/08/14 Under Surveillance
Cases reported from various Subcentres of District Cachar.
RRT investigated the outbreak. Active case search done.
All cases treated symptomatically. All age groups affected.
Out of 07 CSF samples tested at SMCH, Silchar & GMCH,
Guwahati 05 cases were found positive for JE IgM ELISA.
Death occurred in a 59 year old female tested JE positive.
Fogging and anti larval control measure undertaken. Heath
education done regarding personal protection
Tinsukia
Japanese Encephalitis
67 cases 15 fatal 15/06/14 Under Surveillance
Cases reported from Hapjan, Ketetong, Kakopather, NaSadiya, District
Tinsukhia. RRT investigated the outbreak. Active case search done. All
cases treated symptomatically. Majority of cases are adults. Out of 67
CSF samples tested at AMCH, Dibrugarh 23 cases were found positive
for JE IgM ELISA. Out of 15 deaths which occurred 05 were JE positive.
Fogging and anti larval control measure undertaken. Heath education
done regarding personal protection.
