Patna, Aug 7 (PTI) 299 children have died of encephalitis in Bihar this year, state Health Minister Ashwani Chaube told the legislative council.

Muzaffarpur district alone accounted for 178 deaths, Chaube said in reply to a question by JD(U) MLC Narendra Singh and CPI MLC Kedarnath Pandey today.

While 104 children died in Patna district, the casaulties in Gaya and Vaishali districts stood at 12 and five respectively, Chaube said.

Two children succumbed to encephalitis at the BRD Medical College Hospital here, taking the death toll in the disease in eastern Uttar Pradesh this year to 159.
The children, who hailed from Gorakhpur and Kushinagar districts, died at the hospital yesterday, health officials said on tuesday.

A total of 838 encephalitis patients were admitted to different government hospitals of Gorakhpur and Basti division this year of which 159 died, they said.

As many as 29 fresh patients of suspected encephalitis have been admitted to the BRD MCH during the past 24 hours, they said, adding 92 encephalitis patients are being treated at different government hospitals at present.

Abstract
Aim: Japanese Encephalitis [JE] is a serious public health problem in West Bengal. From 2006 onwards, some districts of this state which are endemic to JE were vaccinated to control the children mortality due to the disease. The purpose of this study is to detect the Japanese Encephalitis Virus [JEV] as the etiologic agent from the acute encephalitis syndrome [AES] cases mainly amongst the children and young adults from vaccinated and non-vaccinated districts of West Bengal.

Method: For the detection of JEV, a total of 828 sera were referred from vaccinated and non vaccinated districts of West Bengal during 2005-2011. JE positive cases were confirmed by ELISA and RT-PCR method.
Results: Out of 828 cases, 245 samples were positive by ELISA method and 46 samples were positive by RT-PCR method. Out of 291 total positive cases, 162 [55.6%] were below 20 years of age. Initially in 2005, JE cases were highest amongst the children and young adults [0-20 years]. After vaccination, although the JE cases declined gradually in the vaccinated districts, but again from 2010, JE cases from the said age group showed an increasing trend from those districts. JE cases were also reported from other endemic zones of this state, which are still non-vaccinated.

Conclusions: In West Bengal, JE cases are still predominated among children and young adults till the year 2011. Mass scale vaccination programme and investigation on the circulating strains are essentially required to find out the reasons of increasing tendency of JE cases in this state.

Encephalitis claims 7 in Darrang district

MANGALDAI, Aug 12 ? Seven persons have died and several others affected as Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and the acute encephalitis like diseases have taken a serious turn in Darrang district.
The situation seems to be alarming as new cases of affected patients have been reported almost every week. Significantly, it is observed from the records of the district health department that the victims are mostly children.

According to sources in the district malaria department, Chayanika Deka (14) of village Kamarpara, Gossaigaon, Mangaldai was the first case of JE in the district, who was found positive on May 25 last.

The girl child who reportedly recovered after being treated in GMCH recently, once again turned serious and had to be readmitted. Since May 25 last the number of JE positive cases recorded is as many as 14 and among them 5 have already died. Moreover, 7 other cases have been categorised under Acute Encephalites Syndrome (AES) and two such syndrome cases have also been recorded as dead bringing the total number of death cases during this period to seven.

Gorakhpur: Purvanchal Encephalitis in the recruitment of patients and deaths continues. In the past two days while the Gorakhpur Medical College 21 new patients were admitted to killing six-year-old Alexander.

Haldwani, Uttarakhand, Aug 21 (IBNS)

At least two minors succumbed to viral encephalitis at Haldwani District of Uttarakhand, said health officials on Tuesday.

Ro's comment - The NVBDCP ( http://nvbdcp.gov.in/je-cd.html ) has not recorded any cases of JE or AES in Odisha in the past 6 years. Herpesviral encephalitis has a fatality rate of 30+% so even though a large number seem to be testing positive for herpesvirus, it seems unlikely that this is the agent responsible for the encephalitis symptoms.

Postmen to help curb encephalitis in villages

The postman, a familiar figure in rural areas, besides distributing letters will now lend a helping hand in the fight against the dreaded encephalitis, which claim hundreds of lives, mostly children, in eastern Uttar Pradesh districts.

According to officials, postmen will be used to spread awareness among people in rural areas so that they can take precautions and protect themselves from encephalitis.
?Postmen almost regularly visit houses in villages to deliver letters and money orders. They are well-known to people and people also trust them,? said Alok Ojha, a senior official in the department of post at Gorakhpur.
