Malnutrition is at the core of encephalitis
TNN | Jul 26, 2012, 04.48AM IST

GORAKHPUR: It takes courage to enter the pediatric ward of Baba Raghav Das Medical College, Gorakhpur. The corridors are crowded with parents whose children struggle for every breath in the intensive care units. In the ward, some children breathe strenuously even on ventilators. Most of them have shrunken beyond recognition with their ribs sticking out. Some need tracheotomy (a surgical procedure to create an opening through the neck into the trachea (windpipe) to help patients breathe), but at times even that doesn't help. When their breath gets stuck, parents make the child sit upright so that he can heave up and down labouriously to pump oxygen into the body. These children, most of whom are malnourished, are suffering from Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). Doctors say malnutrition is a major reason which makes children vulnerable to this disease.

Malnutrition triggers AES: Pediatricians say malnutrition is an open invitation to diseases. Neha Singh, chief of WHO-Unicef supported Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre at BRD Medical College, says that most the AES cases come from the lower socio-economic groups.
