Dengue data block defies safety logic

Sanjay Mandal

The Union health ministry said this week that 23 people had died of dengue in Bengal since January. Some officials in Bengal said, off the record, that the toll could be more than 30. In the state government's studied silence lies the real sting in the tale.

Midway through the dengue outbreak, the state health department stopped updating the death toll as well as the number of new cases detected. The unofficial reason, a senior official said, was to prevent panic.

But public health experts and government officials in at least two other cities affected by dengue said they preferred a little panic rather than complacency.
...
A senior official of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme said dissemination of information was critical to quick follow-up action and feedback that helps prevent the disease from becoming a full-blown threat to public health.

KOLKATA: A potentially life-threatening consequence of dengue is on the prowl here, with at least seven people being diagnosed with encephalitis caused by the mosquito-borne virus.Though some cases were serious, there has been no death.
Encephalitis symptoms have merged with those of dengue, even though they are far more severe, excruciating pain in the head, dim vision, vomiting and confusion being some of the typical ones. When caused by dengue, they could be coupled with convulsion and even coma. At least two patients in the city went into coma last month, but were revived.”This is probably the deadliest viral attack. Encephalitis itself is life-threatening. In conjunction with dengue, it becomes very difficult to manage and survival rate is low. We were fortunate to have been able to save two patients who went into coma. The condition of the rest were also very critical,” saidDebashish Saha, consultant, AMRI Hospital, Salt Lake.
