SHRC seeks report on dengue deaths
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

TJAC petitions State Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention in safeguarding welfare of people

State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Saturday sought report from Telangana Chief Secretary on deaths due to outbreak of vector-borne diseases reported in the State following a petition filed by Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC).

The Commission asked the CS to respond to the petition filed by TJAC, led by its chairman M. Kodandaram, by November 18. The petitioner requested the Commission to monitor the steps being taken by the Government to contain water-borne diseases ? especially dengue currently affecting several people ? and the assistance being extended to the patients. ?The Commission would take a decision on the matter after receiving and reviewing the report to be presented by the Government,? Prof M. Kodandaram said.

TJAC pointed out in the petition that 22 persons died of dengue in Ravinuthala and other places of Bonakal mandal of Khammam district alone so far this year. A study by TJAC?s Khammam unit suggested that unhygienic conditions and poor sanitation had created breeding grounds for mosquitoes in the area.

Systems not in place

?Appropriate systems were not in place in the district to diagnose vector-borne diseases especially dengue and this delay in diagnosis had aggravated the conditions of the patients,? the TJAC chairman said. He felt that early and proper diagnosis would have saved some lives.

Negligence cry over infant?s dengue death

TNN | Updated: Nov 8, 2016, 12.20 AM IST

Kolkata: The death of an infant suffering from dengue triggered unruly scenes at the Institute of Child Health (ICH) on Sunday night. While the family of the 10-month-old boy - who had been admitted a day ago - alleged negligence and filed a complaint against ICH at the local Karaya police station, the hospital, too, filed a counter complaint against the family for 'disrupting normal work'.
Saporjo Datta, the infant, had been brought to the hospital with high fever, body rashes and swollen limbs, which, doctors at ICH described as 'classical dengue symptoms'. His platelet count, too, had dropped but was not alarmingly low. Within hours of admission, though, Saporjo started suffering from capillary leakage leading to a quick loss of blood. His blood pressure dropped sharply, forcing doctors to move Saporjo to the ICU on Sunday evening. His condition, however, kept deteriorating till Saporjo passed away at 11.40 pm.

Two more die of dengue fever inflammation

Umesh Isalkar | TNN | Updated: Nov 29, 2016, 12.26 AM IST

Pune: Two more patients succumbed to dengue fever induced complications in different hospitals in the city last week. Both victims ? a 46-year-old man, resident of Wakdewadi, and another 83-year-old resident of Kirkatwadi, on Sinhagad Road ? had developed dengue induced brain inflammation (encephalitis), which is considered an uncommon manifestation of dengue fever.
Dengue is considered a non-neurotropic disease. The reported incidence of dengue encephalitis has been found to vary from 0.5% to 6.2%. But the death of the two due to dengue encephalitis has brought the focus back on the changing clinical profile of dengue, which has started manifesting neurological complications frequently.
A doctor at Noble hospital, where the 83-year-old man was admitted, said, "The patient had tested positive for dengue antigen test (NS1) and developed dengue fever induced encephalitis." The man succumbed to complications at 8.20 am on November 21.
