PUNE: A whopping 53% of the total samples collected from mainly Pune and some of its adjoining districts in about two months have tested positive for dengue virus ? the highest in the last nine months ? at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) here.
The NIV received 495 samples from August 1 to Sept 19, of which 267 tested positive for dengue. In June, 34%, that is 123 of the 361 samples, tested positive.

"We could identify serotype in 27 of the 99 samples tested in our laboratory. We found that dengue virus 4 (DENV-4) was dominant in July and DENV-4 and DENV-2 were co-dominant in August. We could identify virus types in only four samples in September so far. Hence, no conclusion about dominance of a particular dengue virus serotype can be made," said Cecilia Dayaraj, head of dengue research at NIV.

The city has continued to report a substantial number of dengue cases every day since June. A total 2,237 people have tested positive so far this year. Of them, seven have succumbed to the infection.
