Hong Kong: Sixty-two new cases of human swine influenza (7/13/09)

A spokesman for the Department of Health said there had been 62 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (July 13).

The new cases involve 27 males and 35 females, aged between 1 and 59.

This brings to 1,327 the total number of human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza (HSI) patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (July 13):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provide treatment to a total of 457 patients.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that the eight DFCs have ceased the provision of general outpatient services.

Patients with other illnesses are advised to seek medical treatment at other general outpatient clinics in the district or private practitioners.

Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the eight DFCs should proceed to their corresponding clinics with drug refill service according to their date of original appointment and bring along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 62 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 1,327 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 15 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 14 cases are in stable condition and one in critical condition.

Among the confirmed cases was a ward manager of Caritas Medical Center (CMC) with flu symptoms since July 10.

He attended the Accident & Emergency Department of CMC on July 11.

Positive result of HSI was confirmed on July 12.

He is now under isolation with Tamiflu at home. His condition is stable. The ward manager works in a male surgical ward of CMC and has been following strictly the HA Infection Control Guidelines for patient care.He wears surgical mask when he is on duty and practising hand hygiene during his clinical duty.

The hospital will continue to follow the HA Infection Control Guidelines and implement relevant hygiene measures to protect patients and staff.

Among the confirmed cases, there are four public hospital staff:

- A nurse working in neurosurgical ward of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) suffered from flu symptoms on 6 July 2009 after overseas travel.She attended the Central Kowloon Health Centre Designated Flu Clinic on 9 July 2009 and was granted sick leave on the same day. Positive result of HSI was confirmed today(14 July).She is now under isolation with paracetamol prescription at home.Her condition is stable.

- A female nurse of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) returned from overseas on 11 July 2009, with symptoms of fever, sore throat, dry cough and running nose. She attended the Designated Flu Clinic at Fanling on 12 July 2009 and was granted sick leave. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on 13 July 2009. She is now under isolation with tamiflu prescription at home. Her condition is stable. The nurse had worn a surgical mask on the flight and has not resumed duty since her leave.

- A female general services assistant of Tuen Mun Hospital developed flu symptoms on 8 July 2009.She attended Tuen Mun Hospital Staff Clinic and took sick leave on 9 July 2009. Paracetamol prescription was given. She attended Accident and Emergency Department of Pok Oi Hospital on 12 July 2009 and positive result of HSI was confirmed today(14 July). In view of her chronic illness, she is now under isolation treatment with tamiflu prescription at the isolation ward in Tuen Mun Hospital. Her condition is stable.

- A workman of Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital (OLMH) developed flu symptoms on 12 July 2009. He attended the Central Kowloon Health Centre Designated Flu Clinic on 13 July 2009 and was granted sick leave on the same day. Positive result of HSI was confirmed today. He is now under isolation with tamiflu prescription at home. His condition is stable.


The abovementioned staff members have been following strictly the HA Infection Control Guidelines for patient care.

All of them wear surgical mask when they are on duty and practicing hand hygiene during their clinical duty.

The hospitals will continue to follow the HA Infection Control Guidelines and implement relevant hygiene measures to protect patients and staff.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said there had been 78 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (July 15).

The new cases involve 38 males and 40 females, aged between five months and 58 years.

Hong Kong: CHP investigating case of Legionnaires' Disease (7/15/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 15) investigating a case of Legionnaires' Disease involving a 52-year-old man.

The patient, living in Tsuen Wan, developed fever, cough and malaise on July 7. He was admitted to Yan Chai Hospital on July 13 and is now in stable condition.

The CHP's investigation showed that the patient had no travel history before the onset of symptoms. His family members are asymptomatic.

This is the 14th Legionnaires' Disease case reported this year. Thirteen cases were reported in 2008, 11 in 2007 and 16 in 2006.

To prevent the disease, people are reminded to observe the following:

  • An individual may reduce his/her susceptibility to the disease by avoiding smoking and excessive drinking, and maintaining good health.
  • People handling garden soils, composts and potting mixes should take the following precautions:
    • Gently water gardens and composts using low pressure.
    • Open composted potting mixes slowly and make sure the opening is directed away from the face.
    • Wet the soil to reduce dust when potting plants.
    • Avoid working in poorly ventilated places such as enclosed greenhouses.
    • Wash hands carefully afterwards.
  • Proper design, operation and maintenance of man-made water systems.

Hong Kong: Tung Wah Hospital parainfluenza outbreak (7/15/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

A spokesperson of Tung Wah Hospital (TWH) made the following announcement today (July 15):

Four in-patients residing at a male infirmary ward in TWH have presented with fever and respiratory symptoms since July 4.

The hospital has arranged appropriate clinical tests for the patients.

The result confirmed parainfluenza infection but negative for human swine flu or influenza A virus.

All concerned patients are receiving isolation treatment and are in stable condition.

The hospital has reported the cases to the Hospital Authority and the Centre for Health Protection.

Infection control measures of the concerned ward have been stepped up.

New admission to the ward has been suspended immediately while visiting arrangements remain unchanged.

The hospital will keep close surveillance on the condition of the concerned patients.

The hospital will continue to closely monitor the condition of the patient.

Hong Kong: Confirmed human swine influenza case in a residential workshop for the disabled (7/15/09)

A spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (July 15) said CHP was investigating an outbreak of upper respiratory tract infection in a residential workshop for the physically and mentally disabled in Eastern District.

As of today, five workshop attendees, four residents and seven staff members, comprising eight men and eight women aged from 22 to 47, developed symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection, including fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat since July 11.

Among them, a 22-year-old male patient was confirmed to have infected with human swine influenza. He was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital for further management. He is in stable condition.

Nine of the other affected persons sought medical attention. None of them required hospitalization.

CHP officials conducted field visits to the institution and provided health advice to the staff and residents.

All symptomatic residents and staff members were advised to seek medical attention, the spokesman said.

Hong Kong: Eighty-five new cases of human swine influenza (7/16/09)

A spokesman for the Department of Health said there had been 85 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (July 16).

The new cases involve 41 males and 44 females, aged between seven months and 57 years.

This brings to 1,552 the total number of human swine influenza (HSI) cases in Hong Kong.

The 85 cases included a 42-year-old man who was infected with community-associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus and passed away in Ruttonjee Hospital on July 10.

The spokesman said the specimen taken from the man yielded positive result to HSI.

"Post-mortem examination will be performed to determine the cause of his death", he said.

So far, there had been six serious infections of HSI in Hong Kong involving two men and four women aged between 23 and 76, he said.

Four of them are in serious condition while the other two are critical.

  • A 53-year-old female patient attended Tuen Mun Hospital today (July 16). The patient is now under tamiflu and antibiotics treatment in isolation ward. She is in serious condition.
  • A 48-year-old female patient attended Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 15. The patient is now under tamiflu treatment and requires intubation and ventilatory support in intensive care unit. She is in critical condition.

The patient, living in Kwai Fong, developed fever, cough and shortness of breath on July 12. He was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital on July 14 and is now in stable condition. The CHP's investigation showed that the patient and his family members had travelled to the Mainland before the onset of symptoms. His family members are asymptomatic.

This is the 15th Legionnaires' Disease case reported this year. 13 cases were reported in 2008, 11 in 2007 and 16 in 2006.

The new cases involve 43 males and 45 females, aged between 5 and 64.

This brings to 1,640 the total number of human swine influenza (HSI) cases in Hong Kong.

The 88 cases included six people from a residential workshop for the physically and mentally disabled in Eastern District.

Among them, four are workshop attendees while another two are a resident and a staff member of a residential workshop for the physically and mentally disabled in Eastern District.

They comprise three men and three women aged between 22 and 46. They are in stable condition and did not require hospitalisation. The workshop was earlier (July 15) reported to have a respiratory tract infection outbreak with a confirmed case of HSI affecting a 22-year-old male resident. He is still in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in a stable condition.

She developed flu symptoms on July 9 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of CMC on July 12 with diagnosis of upper respiratory tract infection. The patient was treated and discharged. Her condition has not improved and she re-attended the Accident and Emergency Department of CMC on July 13 and was subsequently admitted. She was diagnosed of chest infection and the human swine influenza tests showed negative result on July 14. Her condition deteriorated, requiring intubation and ventilatory support early this morning. The patient was confirmed human swine influenza today after repeated tests. She is now hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit and under Tamiflu treatment. The hospital will closely monitor her condition. Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included a female nurse of Queen Mary Hospital. She is under Tamiflu treatment and isolation at home, with stable condition.

The condition of the 23-year-old female patient at Prince of Wales Hospital has changed from serious to critical and she now requires intubation and ventilatory support. Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included a female nurse of Prince of Wales Hospital.

She is under Tamiflu treatment and isolation at home, with stable condition.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said there had been 66 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (July 19).

The new cases involve 35 males and 31 females, aged between one and 60.

This brings to 1,810 the total number of human swine influenza (HSI) cases in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong: Update on Designated Flu Clinic and admitted human swine influenza patients (7/19/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza (HSI) patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (July 19):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provide treatment to a total of 348 patients. The HA spokesman reminded the public that the eight DFCs have ceased the provision of general outpatient services.

Patients with other illnesses are advised to seek medical treatment at other general outpatient clinics in the district or private practitioners.

Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the eight DFCs should proceed to their corresponding clinics with drug refill service according to their date of original appointment and bring along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 66 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 1,810 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 33 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 26 cases are in stable condition, two in serious and five in critical condition.

The newly confirmed critical case announced today was a patient of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH). The 51-year-old male patient attended the Accident & Emergency Department of TMH on July 17 due to cough and shortness of breath. The initial diagnosis of the patient is acute pulmonary oedema. The patient was immediately admitted to a medical ward for further treatment. The patient was transferred to Intensive Care Unit on July 18 due to change in condition. Respiratory sample of the patient was taken for laboratory test on influenza. The CHP confirmed the positive result of human swine influenza test today. The patient is now under medication treatment of Tamiflu and antibiotics. He requires intubation and ventilatory support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the condition of the patient.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included two female nurses of Bradbury Hospice and Shatin Hospital. Both are isolated at home and one of them is under Tamiflu treatment. Their condition is stable.

Hong Kong reports 76 new cases of A/H1N1 flu

HONG KONG, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong has confirmed 76 new cases of A/H1N1 flu infection in the 24 hours up to 2:30 pm on Monday, medical authorities said.

According to a spokesman of the Center for Health Protection, the new cases involve 36 males and 40 females, aged between one and 81.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 1,886 in Hong Kong, the spokesman said.

The city's Hospital Authority said in a release later in the day that currently a total of 41 confirmed patients are staying in public hospitals for treatment and five of them are in critical condition.
