An outbreak of bird flu was identified in the nearby Bavarian town of Wachenroth on Aug. 25 after dead ducks found in a poultry farm tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of the virus.
Frank Pfeffer, a spokesman for the state office in Schwandorf, said 205,000 birds will be culled in a drive that is expected to run into next week.
The farm in Wachenroth in Bavaria's Erlangen-Hoechstadt area was sealed off and all 160,000 birds there were culled. Officials discovered the infection after more than 400 ducks at the farm died over a short period of time.
The two farms in Trumling and Hofing had business ties with the farm in Wachenroth. Tests conducted on the birds in Trumling and Hofing found that they had antibodies that indicated the presence of H5N1, Mr. Pfeffer said.
He said there was no outbreak of bird flu in Trumling or Hofing and that none of the birds showed signs of illness. But he added the blood tests were enough to justify the culling action.
Germany identified several cases of the deadly H5N1 strain in wild birds in Bavaria in June. Several bird flu infections were also registered in Germany last year.
Globally, the H5N1 virus has killed 195 people out of 322 known cases, according to the World Health Organization. Hundreds of millions of birds have died or been slaughtered.
The vast majority of bird flu deaths have been in Asia. No deaths have yet been registered in the European Union. deaths have been registered in the European Union.

German authorities said Friday [7 Sep 2007] that more than 200 000
ducks would be slaughtered at 2 farms in Bavaria after tests
indicated the presence of the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The head of Bavaria's state office for health and food safety, Volker
Hingst, said the slaughter was "a purely precautionary measure,"
taken after "laboratory indications of H5N1" were found. The birds
were not visibly sick, he said.

The 2 farms are located near Schwandorf, east of Nuremberg, and have
a total of 205 000 ducks. It was not immediately clear how the virus
might have gotten there.

Last month [August 2007], more than 160 000 ducks were slaughtered at
another Bavarian poultry farm following an outbreak of the disease.
Officials have said that contaminated straw was the likely source in that case.

The 2 businesses affected Friday [7 Sep 2007] are subsidiaries of
that farm, authorities said.

It would be even more intersting to know why the conservation groups, which claim to have over 300,000 H5N1 negatives in live wild birds don't say anything about H5N1 antibody levels, which were readily detected in the asymptomatic domestic ducks that are being culled in Bavaria.

It might also be useful to define propaganda for the media that keeps propagating the nonsense on the "negatives".

they had positives PCR too in Schwandorf.
3300 samples, 19 positive.
They had "a few" positive antibody tests but don't say how
many were tested.
I assume the antibody tests are more expensive, it would be interesting
to know, how much these tests cost.
I asked this before...

No, antibody tests are done in microtiter paltes for pennies per assay (96 tests per $1 plate).

Precautionary mass culling

No one has said anything about a low path H5N1 sequences, which are VERY different than a high path H5N1 sequence. Although low path H5N1 is in Europe, there has been no data presented to indicate the H5N1 in the birds in eastern Gemrnay was low path. The biological test to determine pathogenicity is done on experimental chickens. All of the culled birds that were asymptomatic were ducks.

If there is PCR data, there should be sequence data, which would EASILY distinguish European low path H5N1 from Qinghai high path H5N1.

The comments on the asymptomatic birds are based on the observation that the birds looked healthy, even though they had H5N1 antibodies (and H5N1 sequences?).
