Authorities prepare Germany largest Keulungsaktion before Nittenau (dpa) - after the outbreak of the bird flu in two Oberpfaelzer enterprises the authorities prepare the so far largest Keulungsaktion in Germany. With the toetung that approximately 205,000 animals is to be begun still in the morning, communicated the district administration office swan village. Two duck mast enterprises are concerned in Nittenau and Bruck. It concerns thereby subsidiary companies of a mast enterprise in Wachenroth. There two weeks ago ago the bird flu had been already determined.

Nittenau (Reuters) - after the bird flu suspicion in two Oberpfaelzer duck mast enterprises the authorities began on Saturday with the largest Keulungsaktion in the history of the Bundesrepbulik. In the enterprises in the places Trumling and Hofing should be killed according to data of the Spreches of the district administration office swan village, franc pepper, 205,000 animals. The Keulung will probably drag on into the next week. With the two yards it acts the authority according to around contact contacts of the poultry mast enterprise in the proximity of attaining, where the bird flu had broken out two weeks ago ago. There 166,000 ducks had been killed. Because of the business relations the ducks in the Oberpfaelzer enterprises had been examined as a precaution. Anti-body tests would have furnished, said a clear reference to also the exciter H5N1 dangerous for humans in the blood pepper. Of an outbreak of the epidemic cannot be spoken however, since so far no animal was obviously gotten sick. The references are however sufficient, in order to justify the Keulung of the animals.

about 40men of the poultry-company and official veterinaries
will cull the animals and put them into containers which are then
transported with trucks to a animal-body-removal-facility.
There are strict disinfection measures.
80 men from technical-help-organization,fireworkers and red cross

Bird cull begins in Germany

<!-- dateline -->BERLIN<!-- /dateline --> ? German authorities started culling tens of thousands of birds at two farms in the Bavarian towns of Trumling and Hofing as a protective measure over fears of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.
An outbreak of bird flu was identified in the nearby Bavarian town of Wachenroth on Aug. 25 after dead ducks found in a poultry farm tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of the virus.
Frank Pfeffer, a spokesman for the state office in Schwandorf, said 205,000 birds will be culled in a drive that is expected to run into next week.
The farm in Wachenroth in Bavaria's Erlangen-Hoechstadt area was sealed off and all 160,000 birds there were culled. Officials discovered the infection after more than 400 ducks at the farm died over a short period of time.
The two farms in Trumling and Hofing had business ties with the farm in Wachenroth. Tests conducted on the birds in Trumling and Hofing found that they had antibodies that indicated the presence of H5N1, Mr. Pfeffer said.
He said there was no outbreak of bird flu in Trumling or Hofing and that none of the birds showed signs of illness. But he added the blood tests were enough to justify the culling action.
Germany identified several cases of the deadly H5N1 strain in wild birds in Bavaria in June. Several bird flu infections were also registered in Germany last year.
Globally, the H5N1 virus has killed 195 people out of 322 known cases, according to the World Health Organization. Hundreds of millions of birds have died or been slaughtered.
The vast majority of bird flu deaths have been in Asia. No deaths have yet been registered in the European Union. deaths have been registered in the European Union.

German authorities said Friday [7 Sep 2007] that more than 200 000
ducks would be slaughtered at 2 farms in Bavaria after tests
indicated the presence of the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The head of Bavaria's state office for health and food safety, Volker
Hingst, said the slaughter was "a purely precautionary measure,"
taken after "laboratory indications of H5N1" were found. The birds
were not visibly sick, he said.

The 2 farms are located near Schwandorf, east of Nuremberg, and have
a total of 205 000 ducks. It was not immediately clear how the virus
might have gotten there.

Last month [August 2007], more than 160 000 ducks were slaughtered at
another Bavarian poultry farm following an outbreak of the disease.
Officials have said that contaminated straw was the likely source in that case.

The 2 businesses affected Friday [7 Sep 2007] are subsidiaries of
that farm, authorities said.

It would be even more intersting to know why the conservation groups, which claim to have over 300,000 H5N1 negatives in live wild birds don't say anything about H5N1 antibody levels, which were readily detected in the asymptomatic domestic ducks that are being culled in Bavaria.

It might also be useful to define propaganda for the media that keeps propagating the nonsense on the "negatives".

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

they had positives PCR too in Schwandorf.
3300 samples, 19 positive.
They had "a few" positive antibody tests but don't say how
many were tested.
I assume the antibody tests are more expensive, it would be interesting
to know, how much these tests cost.
I asked this before...

No, antibody tests are done in microtiter paltes for pennies per assay (96 tests per $1 plate).

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

(Reuters) - in the fight against the bird flu the authorities started the largest Keulungsaktion in two Oberpfaelzer duck mast enterprises on weekend in the history of the Federal Republic. Altogether approximately 205,000 animals are to be killed. The Keulung will drag on according to estimate of the authorities further days. Into the night to Sunday first those had been killed nearly 30,000 animals on a yard in Trumling with the help of a mobile Keulungsanlage. On Sunday the action in the three stables of an enterprise in Hofing was continued. It is expected that the capacity can be increased by 3000 to 4000 killed animals per hour in the course of the day on up to 10.000. A statement, how long the Keulung will still last, is at the earliest on Monday possible, said the speaker of the district administration office swan village, franc pepper. The two yards with Nittenau had contact to the poultry mast enterprise in the proximity of attaining, where the bird flu had broken out well two weeks ago. There 166,000 ducks had been killed. The poultry in the Oberpfaelzer enterprises was thereupon as a precaution examined. Anti-body tests would have furnished the reference in the blood that the exciter was present or is H5N1 in the enterprise. Even if so far no animal is gotten sick, the references were sufficient, in order to justify the Massenkeulung, said pepper. The enterprises are spaciously locked. Vehicles, which left the yards, were disinfected by the technical welfare organization.

only 90000 were ill, the rest was preventive

pig-plague 1997 in Netherlands: 12M pigs

In UK, Febr.2001 foot-mouth 6.5M - 10M animals

BF H7N7 in 2003 in Netherlands: 26M fowl in 2 months

Precautionary mass culling

Schwandorf. After the find of bird flu exciters Schwandorf the so far largest massculling of poultry in the history of Germany takes place in the Bavarian district.

More than 200,000 ducks in two fattening enterprises must be slaughtered. It was expected that the work lasts until Monday.

A speaker of the district stressed that it concerns thereby a precautionary measure, it still with none of the animals the illness broke out.

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

Are they saying the blood tests showed LPAI, but they only consider HPAI to be "bird flu?"

Asimptomatic illness - but the blood tests reveal it.

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

Are they saying the blood tests showed LPAI, but they only consider HPAI to be "bird flu?"

.
No one has said anything about a low path H5N1 sequences, which are VERY different than a high path H5N1 sequence. Although low path H5N1 is in Europe, there has been no data presented to indicate the H5N1 in the birds in eastern Gemrnay was low path. The biological test to determine pathogenicity is done on experimental chickens. All of the culled birds that were asymptomatic were ducks.

If there is PCR data, there should be sequence data, which would EASILY distinguish European low path H5N1 from Qinghai high path H5N1.

The comments on the asymptomatic birds are based on the observation that the birds looked healthy, even though they had H5N1 antibodies (and H5N1 sequences?).
