Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

Bird flu by straw (attain - 27.08.2007) infectious straw from the environment is probably the cause for the bird flu in a duck mast enterprise in the area attaining. "the momentary epidemiological data suggest" said the director/conductor of the veterinary centre of the district attaining high city, Ottmar Fick, on Monday. Two scientists of the Friedrich Loeffler institute are to clarify the exact origin of the highly infective H5N1-Virus. The two epidemiologists are on the way to the mast enterprise in Wachenroth. After the occurance of of the bird flu on Friday all 160,000 ducks and young animals of the enterprise had been killed. More information about bird flu on vitanet.de

Contaminated straw believed at fault in German H5N1 outbreak

The Associated Press
Monday, August 27, 2007

BERLIN: Straw contaminated with the H5N1 strain of bird flu was the likely source of an outbreak of the disease at a poultry farm in southern Germany that resulted in 160,000 birds being slaughtered, an official said Monday.
Ottmar Fick, the chief veterinarian in the Erlangen district of northern Bavaria, said it remained unclear how the straw, which was stored on the farm, became infected, although wild birds were a possible source.
Two experts from a federal animal disease lab were at the site, he said.
The virus was detected in ducklings at the farm Friday, and the federal lab confirmed the presence of the lethal H5N1 strain on Saturday.
Authorities ordered the slaughter of all 160,000 birds on the farm as a precaution ? a process Fick said was completed Sunday night. A three-kilometer (1.85-mile) exclusion zone is in place around the farm.
Several cases of the virus have surfaced among wild birds in Germany this year. Last month, it was detected in a domestic goose in the east of the country.
The H5N1 virus has killed more than 190 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
It is hard for humans to catch, but experts fear it could mutate into a form that spreads easily among people, potentially sparking a global pandemic. To date, most human cases have been traced to contact with infected birds.

After the occurance of of the bird flu exciter H5N1 in Bavaria the European Union commission will issue a regional trade embargo for poultry presumably still on Monday. Thereupon up to the Sunday evening 160,000 ducks were gekeult. It was the so far largest mass massentoetung in a poultry enterprise since the first outbreak of the bird flu in Germany. As a the most probable cause for the transmission to the mast ducks a pollution of the straw, with which the stables were laid out, is considered by infected bird excrement.

Highly pathogenic H5N1 virus confirmed in Bavaria

Sofia. The European Commission was informed by the German authorities on Saturday of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza on a duck farm in Bavaria, in a region where infected wild birds were detected in July and early August, the press office of the European Commission informed.
Upon suspicion of the virus, the German authorities immediately applied the necessary control measures laid down under EU legislation, and the Commission will adopt a Decision later today to confirm the risk areas set up around the outbreak.
Avian influenza was suspected on the Bavarian farm when an abnormally high mortality rate was reported in a flock of almost 170 000 ducks. Diagnostic tests carried out by Germany?s national laboratory confirmed the virus to be the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. The German authorities immediately began culling the ducks on the holding and applied the measures laid down in the Avian Influenza Directive 2005/94/EC. This entails the establishment of a protection zone of 3 km radius and a surveillance zone of 10 km around the infected holding.
The area covered by the protection zone and the surveillance zone is classified as a high risk area (area A) which is surrounded by a low risk area (area B) acting as a buffer zone to the disease free parts of the country. Strict movement controls are in place, poultry must be kept indoors, gatherings of poultry and other birds are banned, and on-farm bio security measures will be strengthened. The Commission will adopt a Decision today confirming the A and B areas set up in Germany and the disease situation will be reviewed by the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health in early September.

After bird flu outbreak further (poultry) enterprises as a precaution closed

Wachenroth . In connection with the outbreak of the bird flu on a poultry yard in the Middle Franconian Wachenroth further mast enterprises are closed in Bavaria.

As the vice-president of the Bavarian national office for health and food security, Andreas Zapf, on Monday on DDP-inquires said, in these cases commercial relations with the enterprise concerned in the district Erlangen-H?chstadt would have existed.

?We must exclude each transmission risk?, said Zapf. Therefore also the ways of all trucks would have to be reconstructed, which left the enterprise in Wachenroth in the past four weeks. apf did not want to call the number of the as a precaution closed yards.

Go to Lower Franconia with the bird flu safe In middle Franconia authorities full steam ahead work to prevent the further propagation of the bird flu. The precaution measures hand until Lower Franconia inside, where the virus was so far however not found. In the district administration office the veterinarians want to go to peppering castle safe. In order to be able that the dangerous exciter of the bird flu virus comes from a poultry mast enterprise in the district, veterinary surgeons exclude random test method blood on Monday from the animals inferred. The local mast enterprise lets animals slaughter its in that enterprise when attaining, in which the bird flu had broken out. 8000 Kueken and 16,000 ducks, which are four weeks old, fed in the 3000 square meters large resounds up to battle-ripe. The independent enterprise co-operates closely with that guard red ago poultry production company. Those supplies first the straight slipped Kueken to Lower Franconia and fetches it after seven weeks - if they are battle ripe - again. "that is a closed system", says the owner of the mast enterprise. "the Kueken comes from Northern Germany. There no virus was determined." The business owner holds it for impossible that the ducks from Lower Franconia brought the exciter to middle Franconia. Because in Wachenroth the battle animals would not have a contact to the animals in the there mast enterprise. There is to mast and battle enterprise there next to each other, explains a spokeswoman of the Bavarian national office for health and food security in attaining. "the externally delivered ducks do not come with the poultry locally into contact." Its mast enterprise in the district peppering castle is the only one in Franconia, which lets slaughter in Wachenroth, says the owner. And that poultry producer arranges own investigations four times guard red ago apart from officially prescribed controls in the year with its suppliers. At the government of Lower Franconia the slogan reads: "watching out, but peace retains." Beside the enterprise from the district peppering castle had, confirms July no different one since at the end of in Lower Franconia contact with the enterprise in Wachenroth Marlene shower of the pressestelle on request. It was now examined by veterinarians, no increased mortality rate was determined. But caution for the sake of one waits for still the chemical investigation. Meanwhile attaining covers the restricted area around the enterprise concerned a radius of ten to 13 kilometers in the district. That is, at the edge also water Berne village is affected in the district Kitzingen by the occasional prohibition of the retracting and extending of birds. This is however a pure precautionary measure, the district administration office is about to determine the enterprises concerned. Meanwhile in Wachenroth clearing up and disinfection work began. "at the earliest after the abolition of the pure and Raus prohibition in 21 days the stables can be fed again", said veterinary centre boss Ottmar Fick on Monday before the working area. Eight veterinarians as well as coworkers of the poultry yard were busy for Saturday evening with the Keulung of the 160,000 ducks and Kueken. In the two mobile plantplant plants of the Free State "Kueken became by carbon dioxide guest", communicated the national office for food security. The dead animals were brought to two animal body removal plants. Subsequently, the complete enterprise must be disinfected.

Germany to enforce buffer zone around bird flu farm

The European Commission and Germany on Monday agreed to implement a 15-kilometre (10-mile) buffer zone around a Bavarian farm after the discovery of the highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 bird flu, an EU spokesman said.

German authorities on Saturday announced that tests on a number of ducks from the farm at Wachenroth near the southern city of Erlangen, 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Munich, confirmed the strain, adding that 160,000 poultry would be destroyed.

German and EU officials discussed the problem in Brussels on Monday and the Commission in a statement declared itself "satisfied" with the emergency measures taken.

The buffer zone is drawn around towns and hamlets and is not a perfect circle, European Commission spokesman Philip Tod explained.

It is however larger than the required protection and surveillance zones (three and 10 kilometres) which are routinely applied in such cases.

In the buffer area, restrictions on the movement of poultry will apply but culling is not deemed necessary.

The measures will be reviewed next month in light of the success in dealing with the outbreak.

H5N1, which in its highly pathogenic strain can also infect humans, sometimes fatally -- was found in other ducks in Bavaria this month and over the summer around 50 wild birds were found dead with the virus across the country.

Wild birds can infect domesticated birds with the highly pathogenic strain. Experts fear it could mutate into a strain that can be transmitted between humans.

That really doesn't make sence, the thuringia domestic goose surely never saw bavarian (lower saxxon) mast ducks, despites it could fly  . The sequences will help to trace back the origin, hopefully.

Once again ProMed commentaries focus on the species, igenoring the fact that the number of wild bird species linked to the summer outbreak in multiple locations in four different states (Bavaria, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia) involving multiple species (mute swans, black neck grebes, great crested grebes, little grebes, Canada geese, coots gulls, and a variety of ducks) and the sequences correlate with locations, not species.

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

BIRD FLU 160,000 ducks in Bavaria bird flu outbreak in attaining gekeult: On weekend on a yard in Bavaria 160,000 ducks were killed. It concerns the largest Keulung, which ever gave it in Germany. Still is unclear, how the H5N1-Viren arrived at the yard. After the outbreak also of the bird flu on a poultry farm in attaining, dangerous for humans, up to the Sunday evening 160,000 animals were killed. The ducks originated from a poultry breeding enterprise in the district attaining high city, where on Friday the H5N1-Virus had been discovered. The Keulung is the largest precautionary toetung of utilizable animals, which it gave in Germany ever. AP Bird flu in Bavaria: A THW coworker stands at the hygiene air-lock before the yard when attaining How the exciter arrived into the stable, is still unclear. The ducks had been transported four weeks ago ago from an enterprise in Lower Saxony to attaining. In a part of the enterprise were on Friday within few hours 400 animals ends. Experts of Friedrich Loeffler Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Bundesinstitut for animal health on the island Riems, proved the H5N1-Virus with the animals. A spokeswoman of the consumer Ministry in Berlin said: "hope exists that remains limited to this enterprise." The Kuekenbrueterei of Lower Saxony supplied, said also different enterprises Gert cock, the speaker of the Ministry Of Agriculture of Lower Saxony in Hanover. Veterinarians would not have found however anywhere the bird flu virus. It is almost impossible therefore that the virus comes from Lower Saxony. Tracing in hay Locally upon the fact it was speculated whether strew the ducks the exciter have contained could. Since it is usually outside stored, it could have been infected by a game bird. Further investigations would have to now show, where the source of infection lies, said the spokeswoman of the Bavarian district. The BIRD FLU virus symptom danger for people treatment DDPDie bird flu, also as Aviaere influenza admits, is a high-sticking on virus illness and strikes above all chickens and Puten, in addition, game birds, pheasants and perlhuehner. The virus trunk H5N1 is a particularly aggressive variant, which leads with 80 to 100 per cent of the animals gotten sick within fewer days to death. In rare cases also humans can be infected. World-wide so far over 300 of such cases, most were determined in Asia. Nearly 200 humans died. Most had to do vocationally with poultry. The epidemic is transferred material infected from animal to animal by direct contact, over excrement, saliva and tear liquid or over contact with such as transportation crates or egg cardboards. During strong dust formation also an indirect infection is possible over air. APDie time of the infection up to the outbreak of the illness amounts to usually 3 to 14 days. Often arise high fever, breath way problems, black coloration of comb and Kehllappen, Mattigkeit, Fressunlust, decreased putting achievement and failure. In addition, the animals can fall down or suffocate suddenly dead. APFor it is anxious that H5N1 could mutate, until it is transferable to humans from humans. Newer research results confirm this fear: The Subtyp H1N1, which grassierte from 1918 to 1920 as Spanish flu and up to 50 million dead ones demanded, was a pure bird virus, which adapted at humans. Conceivable is also a double infection of humans or a pig with human and animal exciters. A virus variant could form, which could release a devastating world-wide epidemic - a so-called Pandemie -. Two medicines can help humans in the improbable case of a H5N1-Infektion: The antiviral medicines Tamiflu (Roche) and Relenza (GlaxoSmithKline). Tamiflu gives it as tablet or juice, to Relenza as powder, which is inhaliert. They are called also Neuraminidase Hemmer. Neuraminidase is a protein structure at the virus covering. If this structure is blocked by the medicines, again formed influenza-viren cannot the landlord cell any longer leave and therefore not further in the body spread. The German Lands of the Federal Republic decided 2006, more as eight million doses of both medicines than precautionary measure to buy. They are to bridge the months between an Pandemie outbreak and the development of a vaccine. The area, in which the yard lies, had been already explained in the past year because of earlier cases of bird flu as the risk area. One observed and controlled, explained the region therefore particularly intensively the district. Around the enterprise a restricted area was furnished by three kilometers. So far the bird flu is in more than 30 countries arisen, usually was concerned game birds. Only recently the H5N1-Erreger was determined with game birds at a lake with Munich (more...). According to data of the World Health Organization (WHO) so far nearly 200 humans at the bird flu died, in Europe however none. There were most dead ones in Asia. khue/Reuters/AP

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

On the poultry yard in the Frankish Wachenroth were possibly by far more animals infected with the bird flu virus H5N1, than so far accepted. An expert team discovered bird flu viruses, of which however not yet, whether it concerns the dangerous type H5N1 with the investigation of killed ducks from two further stables of the yard, said the director/conductor of the veterinary centre is clear attaining high city, Ottmar Fick.
Possibly the H5N1-Virus was already longer time in the poultry yard and then however only in one of the 15 stables broke out. The killed animals were more near examined now by Friedrich Loeffler Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut on the Baltic Sea island Riems. So far specialists had discovered infected ducks only in a stable. The new case of bird flu had led on weekend to the country widely largest actionaction action of animals. With the bird flu virus infected water birds do not get sick according to Fick by any means in all cases acutely. With them several weeks or months could offense, described Fick up to the outbreak of the illness. Specialists examined at present, since when the virus is already on the poultry yard and in which way it was brought in. It is completely unclear whether possibly poultry also infected arrived into the trade. "we can not exclude such distribution", said the authority boss. Traditionally the poultry yard supplies supermarket chains and the catering trade. Already in the vortagen the authorities had guard red ago stopped the sales of meat that company, which was delivered after 30 July. After the occurance of of the bird flu on Friday up to the Sunday evening all 166,000 ducks and young animals of the enterprise had been killed (dpa)

(PR inside.com 28.08.2007 16:09:55) - after the outbreak of the bird flu in a mast enterprise in the Middle Franconian Wachenroth the responsible veterinary centre cannot exclude that infected ducks arrived into the trade. Veterinary centre boss Ottmar Fick said on Tuesday on strip packing-inquires, referring to the H5N1-Virus had been found not only in the Kueken stable, but also in other stables on the area. Wachenroth recommend to expressions by E-Mail (strip packing bay). Veterinary centre boss Ottmar Fick said on Tuesday on strip packing-inquires, referring to the H5N1-Virus had been found not only in the Kueken stable, where on past Friday 400 animals ended, but also in other stables on the area. This points on the fact that the virus grassierte already longer on the yard, but not to the outbreak came. So far only commodity from the period had been recalled since 15 August. Now is examined, what before it was already sold (strip packing)

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

Erlangen, Germany - The outbreak of bird flu found on a duck farm near the southern German city of Erlangen last week was probably more widespread and of longer duration than first thought, veterinary officials said Tuesday. Examination of birds destroyed to contain the outbreak revealed that ducks from two other enclosures other than the one where the outbreak was first found had been infected, Ottmar Fick, head of the local veterinary authority said.

Fick noted, however, that it was unclear whether these birds had also been infected with the H5N1 virus, which is potentially deadly to humans.

He added that it was possible that the H5N1 virus had been present for some time on the farm but that the symptoms had shown only in one of the 15 enclosures.

Experts are still trying to find out where the virus originated. Earlier reports said it might have been transferred in straw.

Not all waterfowl suffered acute symptoms from the virus, and the incubation period could drag on over weeks, Fick said.

He added that it was not clear whether infected birds had been offered for sale commercially. "We cannot exclude delivery," Fick said.

Following the discovery on Friday, all 166,000 ducks and ducklings on the farm were destroyed.

The H5N1 strain of avian influenza is fatal to humans but cannot be transferred between humans. It has hit wild water-birds and some domestic poultry in other parts of Germany this year.

Re: Avian influenza (147): Germany (Bavaria)
--------------------------------------------
The most recent outbreak of HPAIV (highly pathogenic avian influenza)
H5N1 in Germany occurred in poultry at a huge duck-fattening unit. A
total of about 165 000 fattening ducks were kept strictly indoors in
several units. In a private laboratory RNA of AIV (avian influenza
virus) H5N1 was detected in samples from one unit holding 44 000
ducklings of about 4 weeks of age which were supplied to the farm at
one day of age by the end of July [2007].

Clinically overt disease and mortality rates increased and the
diagnosis was confirmed by the regional laboratory at Erlangen
(Bavaria) on Fri 24 Aug 2007. Samples were transferred to the
Friedrich-Loeffler Institute on the Isle of Riems immediately and
confirmed as containing HPAIV H5N1 Asia on Sat 25 Aug 2007. All ducks
on the farm were culled by local authorities between Saturday and
Sunday [25-26 Aug 2007].

Immediate epidemiological inquiries, paralleling the culling actions
on the farm during the weekend, initiated extensive trace-back
investigations. In particular, the hatchery supplying the day-old
ducklings, and all farms which had received deliveries from this
hatchery, were tested virologically by the responsible regional state
laboratories. However, no evidence of further infections at other
farms connected through trading or located in the restriction zone
has been found. Thus, the outbreak appears to be an isolated case.

The farm itself is situated in a so-called HPAIV risk area. Such risk
areas have been defined by the federal states of Germany in regions
with a potentially high risk of transfer of HPAIV H5N1 from wild
aquatic birds and relate, in general, to the vicinity of rivers,
ponds, lakes etc. In such areas all poultry has to be kept indoors.

HPAIV H5N1 had been detected 6 weeks ago, in a number of wild birds
(mute swans, grebes) in several locations in Southeastern Germany,
including the city of Nuremberg, which is situated approx. 50 km (31
mi) southeast of the location of the farm.

Further epidemiological investigations are ongoing to elucidate the
origin of the virus and the route of incursion. The results of
molecular phylogenetic studies are expected soon.

[This is most helpful and timely information on the outbreak in
question, addressing -- among others -- our request for clarification
on the species involved (see ProMED-mail post 20070827.2812).

The German Veterinary Services submitted on 27 Aug 2007 a
notification to the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) on
this outbreak. The notification referred to the species involved as
"birds," for which the following figures were provided:
susceptible: 169 857; cases: 4000; deaths: 4000; destroyed: 129 857.
No further data on the affected population was available. For said

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

Exciter of the bird flu over straw passed on ? AP (PR inside.com 29.08.2007 13:55:58) to expressions by E-Mail recommend an attaining (AP) after becoming known further cases of bird flu in a poultry breeding enterprise when attaining holds the government of middle Franconia to contaminated straw than main cause for the outbreak of the epidemic. This acceptance is the only plausible one, said the range leader for environment, health and consumer protection, wolf Dieter over back, on Wednesday on request. The fact that animals are infected with the exciter in different stables does not speak against it: Finally the ducks were accommodated during their short life in several stables. Secured results for the origin of the virus do not give it however yet. The investigations ran on full speed. In a stable of the Entenmaesters in Wachenroth on Friday also the bird flu virus H5N1 dangerous for humans had been discovered. Thereupon all 166,000 animals on the yard were killed. In the periphery of three kilometers around the enterprise a restricted area was furnished. During the investigation of the Kadaver the experts found the virus also in ducks from other stables of the yard. First it was unclear whether it likewise concerns the dangerous type H5N1.

they don't say whether these results will be made public and when.
Seems to be of secondary importance to them. Ahh, well.
