H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

they don't say whether these results will be made public and when.
Seems to be of secondary importance to them. Ahh, well.
They have already announced phylogenetic data on the ealrier outbreaks in wild birds. The various regions in Germany were DISTINCT and those in Kelbra Lake were closest to Tyva/Mongolia isolates from 2006.

ProMed and the media chose to ignore the data indicating INDEPENDENT introductions. Sequence release is linked to publication.

In a duck mast enterprise in the district attaining high city with approx.. 170,000 ducks became in the context of investigations in a stable unit with approx.. 44,000 Mastentenkueken to 25.08.2007 at the LGL attaining aviaeres Influenzavirus by the Subtyp H5N1 (AIV H5N1) proven and the presence of hochpathogenem aviaeren Influenzavirus of the Subtyp H5N1 (HPAIV H5N1) of the FLI confirms. Still to 25.08.2007 the toetung of the existence was introduced, a restricted area, an observation area and a control zone were furnished. The toetung of the existence was locked to 26.08.2007. Epidemiological determinations were introduced.

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

The so far last proof with game birds after the beginning of the outbreak happening of this year (24.06.2007) took place to 15.08.2007 for two black neck divers from the range of the artificial lake Kelbra in the Kyffhaeuserkreis, Thuringia.

In connection with the outbreak of the bird flu in a Frankish mast enterprise the district administration office swan village introduced precaution measures now. Those enterprises in the region, which have to do with concerned the enterprise in Franconias in business, are examined exactly. Two enterprises with several locations are concerned in the district swan village. With them now the hygiene measures were intensified. Until the result of the samples is certain, no animals may be out-brought neither inside nor into the enterprises. With the measure the origin of the H5N1-Erregers is to be clarified.

More than 165 000 fattening ducks had been culled on a large farm
complex in Bavaria, Germany, after highly pathogenic avian influenza
virus H5N1 was detected on the farm on 25 Aug 2007. Full length HA
and partial (538 nts) NA sequences have now been established from RNA
isolated from the CNS [central nervous system] of a diseased duckling
originating from the outbreak holding in Bavaria. The HA sequence
fits into the group of sequences of recent EMA-3 like H5N1 variants
detected in wild birds in Germany and France and in poultry in the
Czech Republic in June/July 2007 (identity 99.1-99.5 percent at the
nucleotide level).

The sequence is clearly distinct from EMA-1- and -2-like isolates
present in Bavaria in 2006 in wild birds. Thus, the outbreak appears
to be epidemiologically linked to the presence of EMA-3-like H5N1
viruses detected in central Europe earlier this year [2007].

Re: AVIAN INFLUENZA (147): GERMANY (BAVARIA) ducklings
-----------------------------------------------
The information that contaminated straw was the source of the virus
is based on speculation and not on any analytical data, as an
official has admitted recently.

It is embarrassing that epidemiological investigations in Europe are
routinely concluded with mere speculation about the causes of the outbreak.

The repeated outbreaks in poultry in central Europe (Hungary/Czech
Republic/Bavaria), completely independent in space and time from any
wild bird movements, indicates that the virus is continuing to
circulate inside the local poultry industry.

Considering that poultry manure is still widely traded and used as
highly valuable fertilizer in agriculture and pisciculture, the
sporadic outbreaks among wild water birds are no surprise. Their
coincidence with rainstorm events, which enhance the transport of
contaminated poultry manure from fields to water bodies, clearly
indicates the route of the virus. So far, fortunately, these
outbreaks have remained strictly limited in space and time and did
not spread among wildlife.

The spreading of the virus from this region to England with poultry
meat transports and to Kuwait by falconry birds (probably exported
from the Czech Republic) earlier this year [2007] are very alarming
signs. It is more than overdue that EU authorities start to
investigate the reservoirs and routes of the virus inside the local
poultry industry in Central Europe, as the national authorities seem
to be determined to divert the attention from the real problem rather
than trying to resolve it, using wild birds as convenient scapegoats.

Dr. Peter Petermann
<PPeterman@aol.com>

[We share Dr Petermann's remark re straw; as a matter of fact, the
need for evidence of straw involvement was expressed in ProMED post
20070827.2812. In a previous communication, Dr Petermann argued that
"putting all blame on migratory wild birds while consistently failing
to produce any hard evidence is more and more appearing as a cover-up
to protect the interests of vaccine producers" (see ProMED post
20061221.3579). While (uncontrolled) movements of domestic and
captive animals, contaminated products and materials, as well as the
use of unlicensed vaccines deserve to be decisively addressed, wild
birds are neither scapegoats nor villains. They just happen to play a
significant role in the epidemiology of H5N1, the extent of which,
the relevant distances, and the species involved, are still "under
study" (which deserves to be enhanced). This is also apparent from
the sequence analysis presented in item [1] above.

The possible spread of H5N1 by migratory birds was studied in a
recent paper by Ducatez et al. (2007): Molecular and antigenic
evolution and geographical spread of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian
influenza viruses in western Africa; Journal of General Virology, 88,
2297-2306. Abstract available online at:
One of the authors' conclusions was that the geographical origin of
West African HPAI H5N1 was not Southeast Asia but the central
Asian/European region and that sub-lineages of the virus seemed to
have followed the east African/west Asian and Black Sea/Mediterranean
flyways of migratory birds; see ProMED post 20070729.2432. - Mod.AS]

Although all of the above is true, the fact that ALL H5N1 west of China is Qinghai has been know since August, 2005, and the migratory flyways are well established (which led to the correct prediction that H5N1 would spread into Europe, the Middle East, and Africa - and ALL would be Qinghai)

After bird flu outbreak: Authorities arrange further culling

Wachenroth (German Press Agency/lby) - after the outbreak of the bird flu in a duck fattening enterprise in the Middle Franconian Wachenroth the authorities arranged the culling of further poultry existence on neighbour yards.

Three farmsteads are concerned in the periphery of the poultry yard.

There further 60 ducks, geese and chickens were culled, communicated the government of middle Franconia on Friday.

It was stated the fact that inhabitants of the yards were busy with the fattening enterprise and therefore possibly to infected animals had contact.

Already on day before on two other yards 520 animals had been killed.

When the bird flu broke out, is further unclear.

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

Bird flu: Positive samples from the district swan village in the district swan village were issued because of the Middle Franconian bird flu case for approximately 60 poultry enterprises extensive precautionary measures. To data of the district administration office two positively tested samples of the closed enterprise are to originally come into Wachenroth from the area swan village. This does not mean however necessarily that the poultry plague exciter from the Upper Palatinate arrived at the yard in Wachenroth, said a speaker on Friday. The animals could have been infected also when transport or slaughtering. After the outbreak of the bird flu in the duck mast enterprise in the Middle Franconian Wachenroth the authorities arranged the Keulung of further poultry existence on neighbour yards. Three farmsteads are concerned in the direct periphery of the poultry yard. There 100 ducks, geese and chickens were gekeult, communicated the district administration office attaining high city on Friday. First from 60 animals the speech had been. The farmsteads are in a periphery of 500 meters around the poultry yard. It was determined that inhabitants of the yards were busy with the mast enterprise and therefore possibly to infected animals had contact, described wolf Dieter over back by the government of middle Franconia. Already on day before on two other yards 460 animals had been killed. Taken samples were examined for a possible bird flu infection. Three that altogether five contact contacts so mentioned are on the area of the district Bamberg. In addition veterinary surgeons examined the utilizable poultry in the restricted area of approximately three kilometers around guard red ago the duck mast enterprise. In the area about 70 enterprises with approximately 1300 pieces poultry would lie. Was unclear on Friday, when the bird flu broke out. An expert team is to have been clarified thereby, like the virus into the duck mast enterprise have been arrived could and since when it there grassiere, reported over back, that as range leaders for environment, health and consumer protection functions at the government of middle Franconia. It cannot exclude that infected poultry arrived into the trade. The meat of the animals is however harmless for humans, said over back under reference to an appropriate evaluation of the Federal institut for risk research. The virus is killed when refining. In the past days hessian authorities had guaranteed 1512 Kilos frozen duck meat from the poultry enterprise in Wachenroth. The meat is roasted, packaged by portion and then again frozen, had already communicated the district administration darmstadt the castle for the further use. The meat is to be destroyed now in an animal body removal plant. More to the topic:

In Schwandorf county, 140 kilometres north of Munich, officials said veterinarian-led teams would begin culling the birds in the course of the day after "clear evidence" of the virus was found in the county.
The two farms near the town of Nittenau belong to a duck-raising company which was hit by a similar cull several weeks ago at another site, in Wachenroth.
The officials said it was still uncertain whether the virus had actually entered the Nittenau farms. The birds will be killed and incinerated as a precaution.
Water birds are especially susceptible to the H5N1 virus, which can be fatal to humans. The fight against its spread is driven by the fear that the virus could mutate and possibly cause massive loss of human life worldwide.

Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

H5N1 in Oberpfaelzer mast enterprises discovers large opinion swan village (dpa) - after the outbreak of the bird flu in a Middle Franconian poultry enterprise also in two further duck mast plants in Bavaria the high-sticking on virus H5N1 was proven. According to data of the Bavarian consumer protection Ministry from the Friday evening the exciter was found with several frozen ducks. Also throat reductions with the animals of the two enterprises in the district swan village would have furnished referring to the poultry plague. "a Keulung of the existence is inevitable around a transmission of the virus on other enterprises to exclude", said ministerial spokesman Roland squirrel. In the next days therefore 205,000 ducks from the yards in Bruck and Nittenau are to be killed. Concern it the so far largest Keulungsaktion in Germany. The two enterprises concerned in Bruck and Nittenau are according to data of the authorities subsidiary companies of the mast enterprise in the Middle Franconian Wachenroth, where two weeks ago ago the bird flu was already determined. After the past realizations from the two enterprises possibly the bird flu arrived after Wachenroth. With the enterprise in Bruck about 180,000 ducks are to be gekeult, in Nittenau of approximately 25,000 animals. A danger for the population is excluded. In the two mast enterprises with the animals more than 3300 samples were taken and examined. Some these animals had anti-bodies of H5N1 in itself. According to data of the authorities only a weak disease picture is to be recognized with infected ducks in contrast to chickens. Swan village land advice Volker Liedtke (SPD) announced that the actionaction action in the four stables concerned will take presumably scarcely one week. The ducks are to be killed animal-protection-fairly with current impacts. Already in August in Wachenroth approximately 160,000 ducks had been gekeult. In the enterprise H5N1 had been likewise proven. Because of the business connection between the three addresses concerned in the district swan village already extensive safety precautions had been arranged. Also different poultry owners are affected by it. Approximately 60 yards in the area swan village may not deliver animals or animal products for one week such as eggs or feathers/springs more.

The authorities react with the emergency slaughtering in the history of the Federal Republic, largest according to data of the federal consumer protection Ministry. 205,000 mast ducks from the enterprises close Nittenau are killed to reduce the the infection danger. The action will last according to estimate from experts into the next week. The Schwandorfer land advice Volker Liedtke communicated on Friday that the bird flu virus in samples from the existence of the duck mast yards in Trumling and Hofing was clearly identified. The samples had been taken past week, since the authorities from contacts knew to the bird flu yard in Wachenroth in middle Franconia. There two weeks ago ago over 160,000 animals had been killed, after also the virus dangerous for humans had been diagnosed of the type H5N1. The Bavarian Department of the Environment confirmed that in several animal samples by the two yards with Nittenau the hochpathogene variant of the H5N1-Virus had been proven "definitely". The Keulung is therefore "compellingly necessary", in order to prevent a transmission on further existence, said a spokeswoman in Munich. Land advice Liedtke said, one will kill the ducks with electrical shock plants. That will take about 60 hours. The Bavarian consumer protection Ministry purchased appropriate plants already more than one year ago. They are mobile and can be brought by trailers to the respective place of work. The killed ducks are burned. On a yard approximately 25,000 ducks are, on the other one approximately 180,000 animals. The yards were blocked by the authorities. The federation nature protection (BN) reacted dismayed to the planned mass massentoetung of the ducks. "the dimension of the animal tiertoetung is apokalyptisch", said the BN regional chairman Hubert refuses. It made mass animal husbandry jointly responsible for the large effects. Instead of the rural enterprises the industrielle agriculture one promote. "ever more meats pushes for the market, intensified controls gives it however", did not criticize refuse. Re: H5N1 in Domestic Ducks in Bavaria

German authorities order 200,000 birds slaughtered over suspected bird flu infection
The Associated Press
Friday, September 7, 2007 MUNICH, Germany:
German authorities said Friday that more than 200,000 ducks would be slaughtered at two farms in Bavaria after tests indicated the presence of the H5N1 strain of bird flu.
The head of Bavaria's state office for health and food safety, Volker Hingst, said the slaughter was "a purely precautionary measure," taken after "laboratory indications of H5N1" were found. The birds were not visibly sick, he said.
The two farms are located near Schwandorf, east of Nuremberg, and have a total of 205,000 ducks. It was not immediately clear how the virus might have gotten there.
Last month, more than 160,000 ducks were slaughtered at another Bavarian poultry farm following an outbreak of the disease. Officials have said that contaminated straw was the likely source in that case.
The two businesses affected Friday are subsidiaries of that farm, authorities said.
The H5N1 virus has killed more than 190 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
The disease is hard for humans to catch, but experts fear it could mutate into a form that spreads easily between people, potentially sparking a global pandemic. To date, most human cases have been traced to contact with infected birds.

H5N1 is now identified on two farms.

> except the two factories in Trumling and Hofing apparantly
> no further poultry-farms are involved

said the county-councellor

ministry for concumer protection says HP-H5N1 was found in 19 samples

...out of 3300 from these 2 farms. 20 farms throughout German
had been examined.

with only 0.6% positives on those 2 farms
I'm not so sure, that there are no infections on the other farms.
They would have to test _many_ samples to be relatively
sure about this.
