BERLIN: Straw contaminated with the H5N1 strain of bird flu was the likely source of an outbreak of the disease at a poultry farm in southern Germany that resulted in 160,000 birds being slaughtered, an official said Monday.
Ottmar Fick, the chief veterinarian in the Erlangen district of northern Bavaria, said it remained unclear how the straw, which was stored on the farm, became infected, although wild birds were a possible source.
Two experts from a federal animal disease lab were at the site, he said.
The virus was detected in ducklings at the farm Friday, and the federal lab confirmed the presence of the lethal H5N1 strain on Saturday.
Authorities ordered the slaughter of all 160,000 birds on the farm as a precaution ? a process Fick said was completed Sunday night. A three-kilometer (1.85-mile) exclusion zone is in place around the farm.
Several cases of the virus have surfaced among wild birds in Germany this year. Last month, it was detected in a domestic goose in the east of the country.
The H5N1 virus has killed more than 190 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
It is hard for humans to catch, but experts fear it could mutate into a form that spreads easily among people, potentially sparking a global pandemic. To date, most human cases have been traced to contact with infected birds.

Sofia. The European Commission was informed by the German authorities on Saturday of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza on a duck farm in Bavaria, in a region where infected wild birds were detected in July and early August, the press office of the European Commission informed.
Upon suspicion of the virus, the German authorities immediately applied the necessary control measures laid down under EU legislation, and the Commission will adopt a Decision later today to confirm the risk areas set up around the outbreak.
Avian influenza was suspected on the Bavarian farm when an abnormally high mortality rate was reported in a flock of almost 170 000 ducks. Diagnostic tests carried out by Germany?s national laboratory confirmed the virus to be the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. The German authorities immediately began culling the ducks on the holding and applied the measures laid down in the Avian Influenza Directive 2005/94/EC. This entails the establishment of a protection zone of 3 km radius and a surveillance zone of 10 km around the infected holding.
The area covered by the protection zone and the surveillance zone is classified as a high risk area (area A) which is surrounded by a low risk area (area B) acting as a buffer zone to the disease free parts of the country. Strict movement controls are in place, poultry must be kept indoors, gatherings of poultry and other birds are banned, and on-farm bio security measures will be strengthened. The Commission will adopt a Decision today confirming the A and B areas set up in Germany and the disease situation will be reviewed by the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health in early September.

Germany to enforce buffer zone around bird flu farm

The European Commission and Germany on Monday agreed to implement a 15-kilometre (10-mile) buffer zone around a Bavarian farm after the discovery of the highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 bird flu, an EU spokesman said.

German authorities on Saturday announced that tests on a number of ducks from the farm at Wachenroth near the southern city of Erlangen, 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Munich, confirmed the strain, adding that 160,000 poultry would be destroyed.

German and EU officials discussed the problem in Brussels on Monday and the Commission in a statement declared itself "satisfied" with the emergency measures taken.

The buffer zone is drawn around towns and hamlets and is not a perfect circle, European Commission spokesman Philip Tod explained.

It is however larger than the required protection and surveillance zones (three and 10 kilometres) which are routinely applied in such cases.

In the buffer area, restrictions on the movement of poultry will apply but culling is not deemed necessary.

The measures will be reviewed next month in light of the success in dealing with the outbreak.

H5N1, which in its highly pathogenic strain can also infect humans, sometimes fatally -- was found in other ducks in Bavaria this month and over the summer around 50 wild birds were found dead with the virus across the country.

Wild birds can infect domesticated birds with the highly pathogenic strain. Experts fear it could mutate into a strain that can be transmitted between humans.

The epidemic is transferred material infected from animal to animal by direct contact, over excrement, saliva and tear liquid or over contact with such as transportation crates or egg cardboards. During strong dust formation also an indirect infection is possible over air. APDie time of the infection up to the outbreak of the illness amounts to usually 3 to 14 days. Two medicines can help humans in the improbable case of a H5N1-Infektion: The antiviral medicines Tamiflu (Roche) and Relenza (GlaxoSmithKline). Tamiflu gives it as tablet or juice, to Relenza as powder, which is inhaliert. They are called also Neuraminidase Hemmer. Neuraminidase is a protein structure at the virus covering. If this structure is blocked by the medicines, again formed influenza-viren cannot the landlord cell any longer leave and therefore not further in the body spread. The German Lands of the Federal Republic decided 2006, more as eight million doses of both medicines than precautionary measure to buy. They are to bridge the months between an Pandemie outbreak and the development of a vaccine. Erlangen, Germany - The outbreak of bird flu found on a duck farm near the southern German city of Erlangen last week was probably more widespread and of longer duration than first thought, veterinary officials said Tuesday. Examination of birds destroyed to contain the outbreak revealed that ducks from two other enclosures other than the one where the outbreak was first found had been infected, Ottmar Fick, head of the local veterinary authority said.

Fick noted, however, that it was unclear whether these birds had also been infected with the H5N1 virus, which is potentially deadly to humans.

He added that it was possible that the H5N1 virus had been present for some time on the farm but that the symptoms had shown only in one of the 15 enclosures.

Experts are still trying to find out where the virus originated. Earlier reports said it might have been transferred in straw.

Not all waterfowl suffered acute symptoms from the virus, and the incubation period could drag on over weeks, Fick said.

He added that it was not clear whether infected birds had been offered for sale commercially. "We cannot exclude delivery," Fick said.

Following the discovery on Friday, all 166,000 ducks and ducklings on the farm were destroyed.

The H5N1 strain of avian influenza is fatal to humans but cannot be transferred between humans. It has hit wild water-birds and some domestic poultry in other parts of Germany this year.

The most recent outbreak of HPAIV (highly pathogenic avian influenza)
H5N1 in Germany occurred in poultry at a huge duck-fattening unit. A
total of about 165 000 fattening ducks were kept strictly indoors in
several units. In a private laboratory RNA of AIV (avian influenza
virus) H5N1 was detected in samples from one unit holding 44 000
ducklings of about 4 weeks of age which were supplied to the farm at
one day of age by the end of July [2007].

Clinically overt disease and mortality rates increased and the
diagnosis was confirmed by the regional laboratory at Erlangen
(Bavaria) on Fri 24 Aug 2007. Samples were transferred to the
Friedrich-Loeffler Institute on the Isle of Riems immediately and
confirmed as containing HPAIV H5N1 Asia on Sat 25 Aug 2007. All ducks
on the farm were culled by local authorities between Saturday and
Sunday [25-26 Aug 2007].

Immediate epidemiological inquiries, paralleling the culling actions
on the farm during the weekend, initiated extensive trace-back
investigations. In particular, the hatchery supplying the day-old
ducklings, and all farms which had received deliveries from this
hatchery, were tested virologically by the responsible regional state
laboratories. However, no evidence of further infections at other
farms connected through trading or located in the restriction zone
has been found. Thus, the outbreak appears to be an isolated case.

The farm itself is situated in a so-called HPAIV risk area. Such risk
areas have been defined by the federal states of Germany in regions
with a potentially high risk of transfer of HPAIV H5N1 from wild
aquatic birds and relate, in general, to the vicinity of rivers,
ponds, lakes etc. In such areas all poultry has to be kept indoors.

HPAIV H5N1 had been detected 6 weeks ago, in a number of wild birds
(mute swans, grebes) in several locations in Southeastern Germany,
including the city of Nuremberg, which is situated approx. 50 km (31
mi) southeast of the location of the farm.

Further epidemiological investigations are ongoing to elucidate the
origin of the virus and the route of incursion. The results of
molecular phylogenetic studies are expected soon.

The German Veterinary Services submitted on 27 Aug 2007 a
notification to the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) on
this outbreak. The notification referred to the species involved as
"birds," for which the following figures were provided:
susceptible: 169 857; cases: 4000; deaths: 4000; destroyed: 129 857.

During the investigation of the Kadaver the experts found the virus also in ducks from other stables of the yard. First it was unclear whether it likewise concerns the dangerous type H5N1.
