Indonesia sets aside 10,000 sq km land for rice farms
KUALA LUMPUR - INDONESIA revealed plans on Monday to set aside 10,000 square km for rice to boost output of the grain as countries around the region struggled to stock up on the food staple on fears of a global supply squeeze.
Indonesian Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono said the government would conduct a feasibility study for the programme, which could help soothe worries about rice supplies in countries such as Malaysia and the Philippines.

'We plan to have 1 million hectares (10,000 sq km) to be given for rice estates to cater for rice demand in Muslim countries,' Mr Apriyantono said.

'We have land, water and farmers in Indonesia but we need investors. I hope this programme will help all the Muslim countries, especially Malaysia.'

The Southeast Asian archipelago has been struggling to increase rice production, the main staple for its population of 226 million people, as it lacks good quality seeds, and faces intense competition for land and a shortage of fertiliser.

But Mr Apriyantono said unmilled rice output was forecast to rise 7 per cent in 2008 to 61 million tonnes on better yields and that there were no plans to import rice supplies.

'Actually this will lead to 65 million tonnes of milled rice,' he told reporters in the Malaysian capital. -- REUTERS

Indonesians decry fuel hikes, Suharto-era abuses in palace demo

JAKARTA - RIOT police sealed off Indonesia's presidential palace on Monday as hundreds of students gathered there to protest planned fuel price hikes and rights abuses under the former Suharto regime.
Police said thousands of officers were on standby as tensions across Indonesia mounted ahead of the 10th anniversary of the fall of the Suharto dictatorship, and with anger brewing over soaring inflation.

Police strung razor wire across the road outside the palace and lined up behind riot shields as the mainly peaceful demonstrators chanted slogans and waved banners criticising the government over a range of issues.

Chief among their concerns were the plan to hike subsidised fuel prices by as much as 30 per cent as well as the failure to prosecute Suharto's cronies for corruption and human rights abuses.

A similar protest in Indonesia's second largest city of Surabaya briefly turned violent when demonstrators tried to break police lines outside Airlangga university, ElShinta radio reported.

Iran to increase trade output with RI

Iran is seeking to increase its trade volume with Indonesia to minimally one percent of Indonesia's total international trade value, envoy said Saturday.

Iranian ambassador to Indonesia, Behrooz Kamalvandi, told Antara this would mean that if Indonesia?s international trade value were at US$200 billion, Iran would attempt to make up at least one percent of the sum, which would be around $2 billion.

?Currently, the total value of trade between Indonesia and Iran has only reached $400 million or about a quarter of our target,? said Kamalvandi, who was accompanied by press attach?, A. Yazdaninia.

According to the ambassador, Iran seeks to meet the target through enhanced cooperation in large bilateral projects, such as oil refineries and fertilizer factories.

The two countries have already secured two major projects in the region, namely a $6 billion worth oil refinery in Banten Province, West Java, and a fertilizer factory set to be built in southern Iran, a project in which each country will contribute 50 percent of the total investment value.

KAJEN - Sampel yang dikirimkan Dinas Kesehatan Kabupaten Pekalongan ke Laboratorium Health (Labkes) Semarang menyusul keracunan menimpa delapan resident Desa Werdi, Kecamatan Paninggaran two pekan lalu, diketahui mengandung kuman. Berdasarkan pengujian laboratorium, kuman terdapat pada semua sampel yang dikirim.

Kepala Dinas Kesehatan dr Hasyim Purwadi melalui Kasi Pencegahan dan Surveillan Penyakit, Setiawan DA, setelah menerima pengujian sampel tersebut, kemarin menjelaskan, sampel jamur mentah mengandung kuman Enterobacter aglomerans.

Sementara pada sampel jamur siap masak, menunjukkan adanya kuman Alfa streptococcus dan kuman lain yang tumbuh, antara lain yakni Staphylococcus epidermis.

?Pada muntahan korban keracunan diketahui terdapat kuman Klebsiella pneumumoniae dan Staphylococcus saprophyticus,? kata dia. Kuman tersebut, lanjutnya, yang menyebabkan korban mengalami mual, muntah, dan diare, serta demam.

Racun

Berdasarkan pengujian tersebut, kata dia, tidak ditemukan indikasi jamur tercemar bahan insektisida atau pestisida atau lainnya. ?Jamur itu sendiri sudah mengandung racun dan tidak ada tanda-tanda kesengajaan yang dilakukan terkait peristiwa keracunan waktu itu,? ujar dia.
