60 cases of violence againts journalist in one year time: AJI

Surabaya (ANTARA News) - In a one-year period since May 3, 2007, there were 60 cases of violence against journalists in Indonesia, the Indonesian Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) said in a report.

Of the 60 cases, 13 happend in Jakarta, 11 in East Java, and eight each in West Java and Depok, AJI said in its report issued on the occasion of World Press Day on May 3 on Saturday.

The violence was committed in various forms. In seven cases, the violence was done through threats, in five cases through harassment, in seven cases through eviction or expulsion, in three cases through imprisonment, in four cases through censorship, in 21 cases through phyical assault, and in eight cases through law suits.

Most of the perpetrators of the violence against journalists and the press were mobs and hoodlums, civil government, police and military personnel.

In one case, for example, two TV and one radio reporter were attacked by a mob in Bojonegoro`s town square on April 30 because of local resentment against some press coverage.

On April 2, two TV-One journalists who were doing their job were manhandled by people in navy uniforms in Cikarang`s business district, Bekasi.

In East Nusatenggara, on February 16, an Expo NTT journalist was tortured by the secretary of the Ende district administration, and on Feb 17, a Pos Kupang reporter was roughed up by four hoodlums who did not like a report in the newspaper.

Apart from physical violence against journalists, press freedom was also threatened by a clique of people using the power of money or their position. In one such case, Tempo journalist Metta Darmasaputra who was investigating suspected tax evasion by PT Asian Agri owned by business tycoon Sukanto Tanoto, was in September 2007 questioned and threatened by Jakarta police on the basis of information obtained by bugging Metta`s communications.

Indirect violence was also committed against journalists by such bodies as the public prosecutor`s office and Supreme Court such as [article ends here].

World Islamic economic forum is important, says RI`s representative

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia, like some other countries, believed that the Islamic countries in the world whose population is one-fifth of the world total, are playing a strategic role.

But the role needs to be intensified with a view to implementing several agendas and in view of global developments which had brought economy and politics increasingly linked to one another on the basis of mutual benefits, Irman, an Indonesian representative said.

Irman, Deputy Chairman of the 4th Regional Representatives Council (DPD) made the remark in the last day of the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) in Kuwait City, as carried in a press statement received in Jakarta over the weekend.

Irman said the role needs to be intensified, as many oil-rich countries are Moslem, but there are also poor Islamic countries.

He was quoting former British Prime Minister Tony Blair as saying that actually, the economy of Islamic countries is highly energetic.

Although one fifth of the world population is in the Islamic countries, but contributing only 4% to the world`s gross domestic product (GDP). Fuel oil shortages and food price hikes have also adversely affected several of these countries, as President of Abdoulaye Wade has said.

The Indonesian government`s policy of overcoming poverty by the "pro-poor, pro-growth, and pro job" scheme is practically implemented through investment for regional development and creating more job opportunities, education and improvement of human resources.

Irman also said that the House of Representatives (DPR) is formulating a regulation on syariah bonds and credits for small business enterprises through BRI, which since declared by the Presidnet in November 2007 had covered 310,000 households with a turnover of Rp 2.4 trillion.

With regard to efforts at overcoming food shortages, the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah provided US$ 100 million under a short-term program for the poor people in the Islamic countries, and in the long-run Indonesia

ASEAN maintained the Stability of Food

The member countries's ASEAN country agreed to maintain the stability of the price of food to press the influence of the condition for the global market.
This step especially to press the jump of the price of food globally that became the real threat the stability of economics in the South-East Asian region.
The agreement was poured in the statement with 10 ministers for economics in the ASEAN closing of Economic Ministers Retreat and Related Meetings the 14 in Nusa Dua, Bali, last night.
This meeting was also attended by ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan as well as several ministers for economics from several of the partner's countries ASEAN. The gathering ended faster a day from two days that were scheduled.
Come on said, the participants realised the height of the price of the rice in some time last.
This condition was in part caused by the height of the request, the rise in the cost of the production, the farm land reduction, as well as the temporary disturbance, like the unstable weather and the crop pest.

The condition was worried would affect the economy of the member countries of ASEAN. Karena, the ministers for economics agree to nation-nation the ASEAN member maintained the stability of the price of food in their respective country.

ASEAN countries will also try to pull investment from the other region in the agricultural field, one of them from the United States.
The step will be supported to transfer effective agricultural technology and the expansion of the agricultural land.

Malaysian Trade Minister Muhyiddin Yassin that was present in this meeting stating, his side was ready to carry out the statement together that. Not having named the figure, he said the Malaysian Government prepared the quite big fund to ascertain the availability of food in the country.

The agricultural land in Malaysia, he explained, it was confirmed will improve because at this time several regions were prepared.
"Crisis food in the Asian region was the complicated problem.
Therefore, international ASEAN must discuss," he said.

From several of delegation's members of the exporter's countries of the rice in ASEAN, like Thailand and Vietnam, could be revealed by the existence of the plan reduced, in fact stopped the export of the rice.
The reason is, to maintain the supply of food in the country.
Nevertheless, Commerce Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said that the Thai position already clear.

"Was heard by me personally from his minister for trade that there is no plan to stop the export," he explained.
The export of the Thai rice this year reached 4 million ton increased against the same period last year.
However, Thailand as the exporter's biggest country in the world said will not have the problem with Asian food supplies.
"Price indeed increasingly rose, but did not have the problem with supplies because the yield will come back will increase possibly this coming July," said the official in the ministry of the Thai trade that reluctantly was named by his name yesterday.

Thailand that was estimated exported more than nine million ton this year rice rather stifled the market concern.
While India will also increase his yield.
Indian Trade Minister Kamal Nath could also state the defence after his country was claimed as the main cause of the price increase of food.
"We had the very big population, we indeed carried out the banning of the export of several types of the rice, but we also permitted the export of the type of the other rice," he said.
He also said, the level of inflation of food and energy that rocketed was the biggest challenge inside increased the growth of domestic economics.

Press freedom in Indonesia still under threat

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Press freedom in Indonesia is currently still under threat because of the existence of laws restricting it, and pressure from the public and law enforcers, the Legal Aid Institute for the Press (LBH Pers) said.

"A few government policies show a tendency of wanting to control the press such as efforts to revise Law No 40/1999 on the Press," LBH Pers Executive Director Hendrayana said in a press statement here Friday on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on May 3.

A government desire to curtail press freedom was also noticeable in certain articles in the Law on Information and Electronic Transactions (UU ITE) and the Law on Public Access to Information (UU KIP) which were enacted not so long ago, he said.

Article 37 , section (3) in conjunction with Article 45 in UU ITE read: "Whoever, on purpose and without having the right to, distributes and/or transmits, or enables people to access electronic information and/or an electronic document containing an insult and/or a vilification shall be liable to a penalty of 6 years in jail and a fine of Rp1 billion", he said.

The UU KIP`s Article 5 in conjunction with Article 38 states : "Whoever purposely misuses public information and/or commits a deviation in the use of information such as defined in Article 5 section (10) shall be penalized with a maximum jail term of 2 years or a maximum fine of Rp30 million," Hendrayana said.

"The laws, when they were being made by the government and the parliament, were expected to be able to guarantee the freedom of the press and the freedom to obtain and disseminate information but instead they proved to pose a serious threat to the freedoms by criminalizing the press," he said.

In addition, a threat to press freedom also came from the public, business community, the authorities and law enforcers who often criminalized and filed civil law suits against the press and journalists, according to Hendrayana.

Yet, under the country`s Law on the Press, anyone who thinks he or she has been harmed by a press report should seek redress through the mechanism to settle press disputes, namely using the right to reply , the right to rectify or lodging a complaint with the Press Council as the body authorized to settle publicity-related disputes.

"Therefore, LBH Pers demands that the government revoke the legislation that hamper and threaten press freedom in Indonesia," he said.

The institute also demanded that law enforcers (police, public prosecutors, lawyers and court judges) use the Law on the Press as "lex specialis" in settling every publicity-related law suit.

Hendrayana said in the period May 2007 - May 2008, LBH Pers had recorded 26 cases of violence against journalists, namely 15 cases of physical violence and 11 cases of non-physical violence. (*)

Increase the socialisation of the matter AI

The death of dozens of tails of the chicken that was followed by the extermination of the property poultry of one of the residents RT 06/I Semanggi because of being proven contracted the virus avian influenza (AI) or bird flu, cash made the resident around it feel anxious.
Along with ngudarasa several residents who were met Expose, on Saturday (3/5).
Sridadi
the Secretary RT 05/I Semanggi

I did not like that understand what happened to chickens belonging to the resident in RT 06 that, really was affected by bird flu or not.
But because the other poultry was also destroyed was significantly quite true bird flu.
If like that should from the related service or Chairman RW carried out the socialisation to residents around it, including the resident in our territory that his location was neighbouring.
So as the resident could make preparations and increase vigilance.
If necessary the resident around also was given by counselling about the disinfection and was given disinfectant to prevent the spreading of the bird flu virus.
Just frank, although often has been given by the socialisation by the official from the Community Health Centre, the resident in this region many that have an attitude did not care.
The proof is, still many residents who left the chicken and the poultry that were maintained by him wandering in the settlement
.

Hari
Kader PKK RT 07/I
Semanggi
Officially Pertanian (Dispertan) Solo and the RT side or RW that was relevant ought to at once carry out the socialisation to the resident around it, including our RT territory.
Therefore, the resident will not feel restless and wondering, that in the long run even provoked the speculation that unnot.
Many right the resident in this territory that did not know what in fact the bird flu?
How his effect, the method detected him, and how also steps in his prevention.
The resident here most had an apathetic attitude.
If not yet having casualties who fell because of the illness near them, they not yet would really believed.
Therefore, we really hoped Dispertan wanted to intervene immediately carried out the socialisation.

Suyoto
Ketua RT 05/I
Semanggi
The resident's knowledge in this territory concerning the bird flu illness still was very minimal.
Most they only knew him through the presentation in television.
In fact, rare also television gave the complete presentation, beginning with what and how this illness, how his spread, steps in his prevention et cetera.
Therefore, with the incident in RT one that there is several chickens that died because of bird flu, ought to become the warning for the Pertanian Service, Dinas Kesehatan, or the Community Health Centre side, to more again active carried out the socialisation.
With the incident, the resident definitely hoped lest the virus spread to the human body.
Therefore, knowledge concerning how the prevention, the handling, and the introduction to signs of bird flu really important to be spread.
