Nurses rally for better conditions

Hundreds of nurses and students in Jakarta, Central Java and West Sumatra held rallies Monday demanding immediate enactment of the law on nursing.

The bill has been under deliberation in the House of Representatives since 2006.

According to protesters, the law is urgently needed to protect people from illegal nursing practices, as well as to restate the job description of nurses.

Rismanto, field coordinator of the rally in Banyumas, Central Java, said nursing was the medical profession patients most closely related to and an integral part of the medical field, but it lacked a clear and formal legal platform.

Four villagers die of food poisoning

Four residents of Mojoagung village, in Plantungan district in Kendal regency, Central Java, are believed to have died of food poisoning after eating corn mixed with rice.

The four victims were identified as Slamet Riyadi, 48, a caretaker at the Darussalam Islamic boarding school, his wife Sujinah, 30, and students Rohaniyah and Taryanto, both 15.

On Saturday, about 15 minutes after eating the rice mixed with corn, the four suffered severe stomachache and diarrhea. They were later taken to the Sukorejo community health clinic, but Rohaniyah died soon afterward.

"Hospital authorities took food samples from the victims for analysis. We are still waiting for the autopsy results," Naufal said.

There have been a number of food poisoning cases in Central Java in the past week.

In Banyumas regency, as many as 40 pupils from the SD1 and SD2 Bancarkembar elementary schools suffered food poisoning after drinking milk provided as part of the local nutrition enhancement program conducted by the local education office and the Baturaden Prime Livestock Breeding Center.

Riau haze blamed for rise in health woes

The Riau Health Office announced Monday 1,547 people were suffering from a number of afflictions from the haze caused by forest fires in the province over the past two weeks.

Residents in a number of regencies have developed respiratory infections, skin irritations, conjunctivitis and diarrhea.

"The diseases are always imminent during the recurrent haze and dry seasons," said Burhanuddin Agung, head of nutrition and medical care at the health office.

Data gathered over the weekend from Rokan Hulu, Rokan Hilir, Indragiri Hulu and Bengkalis regencies, indicated 1,095 people have already contracted respiratory infections.

The most affected area is Rokan Hulu, where there are 702 cases. As many as 150 people have reported skin irritations in the regencies, 29 of them suffering from eye irritation and 19 from conjunctivitis.

"The number affected could be higher because seven other regencies have not sent in their reports, including Dumai, which is likely to be the worst hit area," said Burhanuddin.

Surging numbers of people seeking treatment in Pekanbaru's hospitals and community health centers show that respiratory disease has doubled in the area.

At the Arifin Achmad General Hospital, for instance, the number of respiratory disease patients seeking treatment reached 25 each day compared to around 10 before the fires.

"The conditions are like this every haze season. Patients not only come from Pekanbaru but also from outside the city. Their conditions are generally not too chronic and they can still be treated as outpatients. Only six patients are currently receiving in-patient treatment," said hospital spokesman Nuzeli.

Besides those being treated for respiratory diseases and irritation, the number of diarrhea patients is also on the rise. In the past week, the number of patients in the four regencies has reached 254.

"Based on our experience, the number of diarrhea patients usually goes up during each haze season. There is no correlation between diarrhea and forest fires. It's actually the rainfall because rural residents still depend on rain for their source of drinking water. During minimum rain, they are forced to seek other means of water, even if it is unsafe. This is believed to have triggered the rise in the number of diarrhea patients," said Burhanuddin.

The Riau Health Office has set up health posts in 11 regencies and cities across the province in a bid to monitor and overcome the impacts of forest fires.

It has distributed 30,000 masks in Siak, Bengkalis, Dumai and Rokan Hilir; areas it predicts will face the worst impacts of the haze.

The health office has also distributed 2,000 free masks in Pekanbaru. The provincial administration has also requested the central government provide an additional 100,000 masks to replenish its stock.

"Other logistics, such as medicine, are still adequate," said Burhanuddin.

North Sumatra again blanketed in haze

Choking haze from forest fires in Riau and Jambi has blanketed North Sumatra for several days and threatens to spread to neighboring countries.

Based on reports from the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMG), the haze has reduced visibility to between three and five kilometers since May 18, from around 8 km previously, but has yet to disrupt flight schedules thus far.

The recent poor visibility in North Sumatra was attributed to haze from forest fires in Riau and Jambi, BMG Medan data division head Firman said.

Riau and Jambi contributed most to the situation despite the declining number of hotspots recorded in Sumatra over the past week, he said.

"Based on satellite images, we recorded 372 hotspots in Sumatra on May 17. This number had decreased to 207 the following day, and had further declined to 97 by May 20, but most of these were in Riau and Jambi," Firman told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Firman predicted that North Sumatra would be likely to experience choking haze until early June.

In Pekanbaru, Riau, the current intense heat in the lead-up to the dry season has raised concerns over the intensity of forest and peatland fires.

Threats against journalists probed

KUPANG: The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Police are investigating alleged threats against journalists made by a police officer who had been declared ineligible to run in the province's upcoming gubernatorial election.

NTT Police chief Brig. Gen. Antonius Bambang Suedi said he ordered military police to investigate alleged threats made by Sr. Comr. Alfons Loemau against two journalists from Pos Kupang and Timor Express dailies.

Antonius said he asked the two dailies to submit written complaints to the police. "I will take stern action against any police officer found committing such acts," Antonius said.

The NTT chapter of the General Elections Commission (KPUD) had earlier declared Alfons and his running mate Frans Salesman ineligible to run after the pair failed the verification process.

The pair's supporters brawled with riot police at a rally at the KPUD's office earlier this week, resulting in seven arrests.

When Alfons was visiting his detained supporters, Benny Jahang of Pos Kupang and Robert Kadang of Timor Express took his picture.

Alfons confiscated Benny's camera and deleted all the pictures on it. He ordered Robert to do the same.

"He yelled expletives and threatened to slap us," said Benny, adding that Alfons also tried to confiscate his cell phone, accusing the journalist of using it to take more pictures.--
