I am not sure where to post this, so please feel free to move this if it should be somewhere else.

Much attention has been given to some articles from Indo about changes in the genetic nature of the virus shown in birds, and I have read a number of analyses here and elsewhere. Mine differs very slightly to the prevailing interpretation and it is as follows:-

In essence what it looks like they are saying to me is this

1. These are the people who are making the statements: Translate as from the Bogor agricultural institute, which is part of the I Wayan group of private hospitals, and associated with teams at the Gajah Mada University, Udhayana University, and the Airlangga University. In other words, this is authoritative, and not the view of a single researcher, but the views of researchers across Indonesia.

Jakarta – the Expert in Microbiology of the Bogor agricultural Institute of I Wayan of the Health Faculty Firm Wibawan said that the bird flu virus to the potential poultry raged. From results of his research with the team of the expert in the health of the animal from the Gajah Mada University (UGM), the Udhayana University, and the Airlangga University were found that the gene of the bird flu virus to the poultry changed the form resembled the form of the virus to humankind.

2. The virus in birds is raging, and has become more like the virus that causes human infections (cleavage site alignment). The logical deduction from this is that the virus will have become more transmissible from birds to humans.

3. “Meaning that if in 1 day, 1 pen that contained hundreds of chickens could die, then if being effective this virus could attack many time insiders that simultaneously. Might not be waiting for the mutation of the virus with the spread model from humankind to manusia {human},”[/u] he stated.”[/B] Translates as that it is possible that a mutation in birds could occur that directly and en masse transfers to the human population; the virus may not have to follow a model where the virus becomes specifically human adapted and pass from human to human as a separate viral entity. The changes needed for a pandemic to ignite could arise in the birds - not humans.

4. The virus has become asymptomatic in chickens in some cases. In other words, people wont know if they have a sick chicken or a healthy one so all bird contacts must be treated as potentially infective.

5. Uptil now from cases that were found, said he, not necessarily the virus H5N1 effective attacked humankind. Meaning that not everyone that contact with the poultry that was infected by the bird flu virus could tertular the deadly illness. Translates as until now not everyone who has contact with this virus, has contracted H5N1. It goes on to state that up until now, there has needed to be a familial susceptibility to the virus.

6. “Jika {If} sometime in the future was found by five insiders of an available place of your relations or blood relations, afterwards simultaneously positive bird flu, significant that the virus H5N1 has begun to be effective attacked humankind did not care genetic him like what. However hopefully this not terjadi {happen},” he said. Translates as, if suddenly a situation arises where five members of the same family are sick at the same time, it is likely to show that the virus has been more efficient in passing from birds to humans, and that it wont matter if there is a genetic susceptibility or not. This would then mark the beginning of the pandemic, but hopefully this won’t happen.

“Virus bird flu to the poultry that we took his sample from this West Java, was researched by us. Results from seven examples of the virus, six among them showed the RRES code like the virus code in manusia,” he said in Jakarta, on Thursday (14/6/2007). Translates as, out of seven samples taken from poultry, six showed the same cleavage site as that found in human cases in Indonesia, showing that this partially adapted to humans ‘avian’ virus is widespread and therefore poses a significant risk to humans, in so far as the probability or risk that such a mutation for efficient human to human transmission could arise in birds is increased if there is widespread avian infection.

I hope I am wrong.

The situation Update 12 June 07 appears to be a simulation involving an earthquake. Doesn't appear to be flu related.

MAC compatible Power Point Viewer is available for free all over the internet. I highly recommend it since you are missing some good presentations without it.:)

I interpret the article as saying that 50% of a regency and city in one province have to be infected with H5N1 before they will announce a KLB. A KLB is sort of a state of emergency, similar to the USA calling out the National Guard.

I agree. That next sentence is critical to understand what's being said -- it's part of the whole quote of what the official said:

So, a KLB (state-of-emergency) will be declared if there are found to be human (& poultry?) cases in half of the regencies/cities in a province (in this case, Riau province). In this case, there's 'only' been cases in two regencies/cities out of 11 regencies -- not enough to declare a KLB.

I wonder if this is how it works in other areas of the country, too? I've always wondered what the criteria for a bf KLB are.

These reports make me wonder: policymakers in several countries still seem to rely on vaccination or ?better? vaccination in poultry.( Nigeria said no to vaccination).

Stopping or controling H5N1 by vaccination simply does not seem to be possible? Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand tried.

On top of that: vaccination seems to make the virus meaner.
