Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Australia have agreed to enhance their good defense cooperation, Indonesian military chief Marshal Djoko Suyanto said.

"We already have good cooperation particularly between the two armed forces and will cement it further in the near future," Suyanto said after accompanying visiting Australian Armed Forces commander Marshal Allan Grand (Angus) Houston during a meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono here on Friday.

Despite the close defense cooperation, the two countries had not signed an agreement that could serve as a legal basis for the defense cooperation, he said.

Citing an example, he said the two governments had not worked out the details of rules to implement an Indonesia-Australia Security Agreement signed in the eastern Indonesian island of Lombok in November 2006.

The chiefs of the two armed forces earlier held a meeting to discuss a follow-up to the Lombok Agreement as part of efforts to enhance military cooperation.

"Up to now, the two armed forces are still waiting for the legal umbrella of the defense cooperation. Anyway, the two armed forces already have good cooperation," he said.
