Hi appleblossom,
IMO it makes sense for him to be counted in the Canada tally. I think it should be locale of death not nationality.... but I'm open to the alternative also. You could count him as 'US death abroad' and the Canada tally could list him but 'count' him...

We should probably decide this as I'm imagining there'll be other cases where people die abroad.

The first death in Texas was a Mexican national. He(?) was the only non-Texan to show up in our official tally, nevertheless, Texas breaks down resident versus nonresident cases. The nonresident cases are not listed in any county.

Why are the deaths of children going up even faster than the overall deaths? Is it because they take longer to die (though a few died very, very fast), or (for some obscure reason) the deaths take longer to be reported? Or is it just an anomaly?

(I would have expected the deaths of middle-aged people to increase more rapidly, as the virus began to spread from school children to adults).

It makes me sick to see how many children are dying of this and to know that there will be a lot more.

Through what age are you considering a child? I've not kept close watch on the exact age but doing more monitoring of ranges (very young, very old, middle aged, etc) as well as length of time from initial attack to death, types of symptoms. If you are counting all the way up to 18 then I think you could be seeing two mechanisms in play. The youngest could be subsequent bacterial pneumonia, the oldest should fall in the risk group from cytokine storms.

It maybe that it has nothing to do with greater CFR % in the children subset of total cases - but more of a factor in which simply more children are infected, and therefore you see more deaths - but the CFR for the group is the same.

We are seeing a high rate of middle age deaths as well, but children always have higher overall infection rates due to the fact that schools/camps etc are simply much more fertile spreading grounds.

But I am NOT saying that is the case. Guess we should run the CFR's by group infections and compare. Haven't checked to see if that data is available.

I was counting ages 0 to 18 (or teenager, when that is the only information given).

I know that more children are infected, so the CFR rate in children is much lower than for middle-aged people. What I am wondering is why the reported deaths of children are rising so suddenly. I would have thought that most of the earlier cases were schoolchildren, and that the deaths of middle-aged people would rise more rapidly as the disease started to spread to older age groups. The CFR among middle-aged people is alarming (whatever the CFR actually is, it is much higher than for children given that more children are infected) but I'm just surprised how the rate among children is suddenly rising. The CFR among children may even be higher relative to the expected death rate of children than the CFR among middle-aged people relative to their expected death rates.

hornblower thanks. I will make a notation on our list for "U.S. Deaths Abroad" but won't include those deaths in our official U.S. count. We might as well stay consistent with everyone else on location of death and not residency. As someone pointed out the first death in Texas was a Mexican resident, and Nevada has recently claimed the death of a New York woman who was visiting Las Vegas.

just some thoughts and info:

1. I think the Alameda report is a delayed one of the 2nd death. It mentions that the death was 1st reported on 6/10/09. Alameda County DOH has only 2 deaths posted on their site, updated 6/16/09.

2. AZ DOH added another death on their tally. Exact age is obscured by their change in reporting. By my guess, it is an individual < 25 years-old.

3. Re: US citizens dying abroad. It might be worth double-referencing them to their home state/country, for the potential tracking of infection/travel patterns that might emerge. Also, it would likely be initially unclear whether they just arrived, was passing through, or had a longer period of stay before becoming infected.
Note that the Pikes County, PA woman died in NY, but was counted in PA?s death total.

4. There is a media report today confirming both Edriana Ramirez and Mark Damper, Jr.

cutter, thank you! great research and links. I've corrected and updated our numbers with your info.

I did count the Pike County, PA woman as a Pennsylvania death, even though she was hospitalized in NY. My reasoning was this: it seemed she had only been transferred out of PA into a New York hospital for treatment, therefore she would have picked up the virus and become sick in Pennsylvania. people who are vacationing like the las Vegas woman and this U.S. man in Canada, could have brought the virus from their home state, or picked it up while traveling, so it's less clear cut in those cases.

I don't know if it's more useful for our death tally to reflect the place of infection, or the place of death. Does anyone else have thoughts on that?

#3 & #4 Florida - Thebes put up this article in the Florida folder about a couple in Madeira Beach, Edwin and Louise Kaczmarski, both 65, who had severe flu and were found dead by a neighbor, reported 6/11/09 *Louise had a heart condition.

appleblossom, thanks for all of your hard work. glad some of my info helped.

I have a thought to throw out to see if anyone has heard anything.
I stumbled across a number of reports from Jan-March 09 of unexpected deaths in children and teens, attributed to the seasonal flu. The reporting of these deaths, including their clinical course, sounds very similar to what is being described by in the present H1N1 cases. Could these have been early swine flu cases? I wonder if there are other deaths that were attributed to the seasonal flu?
This isn't an extensive list -- I just came across these:

Early non-correlated deaths?

- Jan/Feb 09, Colorado ? 4 children; 2 of these with 'serious pre-conditionss' (worst in 5 yrs; typically 2/yr)

- Feb/March 09, Long Island, NY ? 2 children (ages 9, 10; 1st flu-related child deaths on LI in 5 yrs)

- Feb/March 09, Maryland ? 2 teens (ages 13. 15), both with rapid deterioration after typical flu onset

- Feb 09, Boston ? 1 adolescent (age 12), rapid and sudden deterioration (at the time of this death, supposedly the CDC had reported only 4 child deaths nationwide for the flu season).
