Thanks Farmer for this graph. I have though about this myself but have not had the time.
Given the increasing rate of deaths from Swine Flu in the US, it is difficult to conclude that this pandemic is moderating.
This is especially the case given the fact that health departments nationwide have stopped testing specimens from those with ILI unless they are critically ill.
In May, I suggested that it was possible that the US would follow the Mexican epidemic model being approximately 2 months behind that country. Regrettably, this prediction has become true.
However, I also stated in May that if the Swine Flu became severe in the US during June that it would likely die out by July if indeed it follows the Mexican model.
I continue to think this is the most likely probability.
This means that the dramatic rise in US deaths we are seeing now will soon peak and by July will be much lower.
What I have learned since May is that while the new case rate and deaths from flu in Mexico peaked in May, there continue to be new cases and deaths from flu well after the peak. This was not something I expected to see as I though the advent of summer would squash the case rate.
The heat of Mexican summer may have reduced the case and death rate but not eliminated them. Dr. Niman says that this may be due to the fact that A/(novel)H1N1 has an avian H receptor that is most efficient at temperatures above that found within the human respiratory track. So the heat of summer would not necessarily be an impediment to this strain.
If the rest of North America follows the Mexican lead, then we should be within a couple of weeks of the end of the epidemic. I think this is probably correct.
Stay tuned.
Of course, when the fall rolls around in a few months, all bets are off.

There will of course be a steady stream of deaths, possibly even an increase, well after the new case numbers begin to decline, due to the fact that some people are dying 2 or 3 weeks or more after first becoming sick. That is one reason it is so hard to determine case fatality rates. You might try comparing current numbers of deaths to the number of cases a week or two ago (if the number was known, which is, of course, the other problem), but even then, you would have a problem, since some people are dying very fast (within 4 days of getting sick). I don't think we will see fewer deaths in July, even if the number of cases has peaked.

I don't know if I will get a chance to before my wife and I slip away for our anniversary, but I was thinking it may be interesting to sort the deaths by date and see if the number of healthy individuals dying is increasing relative to the number with "underlying" conditions.

Hopefully the CDC is tracking these deaths along with all of the accompanying epidemiological information. It is not to late for FT members to standardize the data collection (based on public news reports) for individuals whose deaths or grave illnesses were associated with H1N1.

Other information that could be included is underlying conditions, clinical presentation (what were the symptoms), cause of death, etc.

I'm fairly software-challenged myself. I can do basic math in Excel and add some shading, but the complexities of Excel are lost on me.

The unidentified death in Cook Co., IL announced today may be Mark Damper, the 8-year-old who died in Markham.
As for putting these on a spreadsheet, I have mixed feelings. It would be easier to organize but I don't know that everyone has Excel on their computer. Google docs is another possibility but the updaters would have to stay in touch with each other to make sure that they weren't trying to update at the same time. I'd be willing to help with whatever is decided, but I couldn't start until next week - I'll be away this weekend.

I'm on a Mac computer, so I don't have Excel or any other Windows programs. I think if we do a shared document it should be something everyone can access online.

Everyone (Winders, Mac, UNIXen) can use Openoffice.org and the open standard ODF for exchanging documents as well. Of course something designed for this kind of collaboration such as a Wiki or content management system would be better suited to the work.

Illinois has identified the 6/17/09 Cook County death as "an 8 year old suburban Chicago boy, resident of Oak Forest." I looked at a map and Markham, IL and Oak Forest, IL are right next to one another. So this could very well be Mark Damper. If someone could find a date of death on Oak Forest we would know for sure.
