In Rio Grande do Sul, obesity is major risk factor for complications of swine influenza

Posted on 14/08/2009 at 11h25m
Wagner Gomes, O Globo

S?O PAULO - In Rio Grande do Sul, obesity appears as the main risk factor for complications of swine influenza. In the state, the percentage of deaths among the obese group of women overcomes and people with some kind of problem in the heart. According to the Ministry of Health, Brazil, pregnancy and heart disease are the main risk factors that lead to death of patients.

According to the Secretary of Health of the State, Osmar Terra, 20.4% of the 50 confirmed deaths until the 10th of August were above the weight. Pregnant women, who are in risk group, representing 12.2% of deaths, 8.2% and the diabetic patients with heart and lung with 6.1% each.

The Secretary said that the deaths in people over the weight is being investigated and is not yet possible to say which factors led to the complication of the table of confirmed patients with influenza A.

- Recently I visited a hospital in Santa Rosa, in the state. Of the six people hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with swine flu, four were above the weight. A survey will show what is happening, but it will only be ready in the medium term - Terra said.

Are considered obese people with body mass index (BMI) above 30. Terra said that not only the morbidly obese died of swine flu in Rio Grande do Sul Patients with 15 or 16 pounds above the weight is on the list of fatalities.

For medical infectologist Nanci Bellei, the committee that studies the influenza in the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI), those extra pounds, even without preexisting disease, have great difficulty in breathing. This may worsen before a picture of pneumonia, a major cause of death in patients with influenza A (H1N1).

- In other pandemics no association with obesity. Perhaps because the number of people above the weight was not relevant. Now, we need to know if the rate of obesity increased in the country. This would explain the higher number of obesity deaths - said Nanci.

The Secretary of Health of Rio Grande do Sul, Osmar Terra, estimates that the number of cases of influenza by the end of this winter should reach 60 thousand in the state. By its calculations, the swine flu occur in 90% of people. He says the worst winter in 20 years in the state, with more than 20 days with temperatures below 10 degrees, and the border with Argentina, are the main factors for the large number of expected cases. The Department of Health ga?cha confirmed until this Thursday 66 deaths per influenza A in Rio Grande do Sul

But the Health Minister Jose Gomes Tempor?o says that the number of cases will decrease gradually. The Secretary said that the drop Ga?cho vai occur when the weather warm. He explained that the peak of the disease in the state occurred in late July and that the situation has stabilized inside. The number of infections has decreased in Uruguaiana, a city that borders with Argentina, and therefore in the municipalities that are in the route of the truck drivers, and Caxias do Sul, Passo Fundo, Erechim and the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre.

For now, only the capital remains ga?cha with increasing numbers of infected by the virus H1N1. According to him, today announced the deaths of patients are hospitalized for more than 15 days.

- The epidemic down the mountain and came to Porto Alegre, but the situation should improve in the third week of August - Terra said.

Survey shows that 62% of deaths by influenza A in RS risk groups include
Confirmations of Friday not surprised authorities
Gustavo Azevedo | gustavo.azevedo @ zerohora.com.br

In announcing 15 more deaths by influenza A in Rio Grande do Sul, the State Department of Health confirmed yesterday that the virus is more lethal as the profile of the victim. Survey of Zero Hora showed that almost two thirds of the 70 deaths in the state - 62% - fall within the risk groups.

The obese and pregnant women, which became priority for treatment in hospitals and health posts, still occupy the top of the list of records fatal: together, represent 21% of cases. The progression of the disease in the state suggests, however, a diversity among the risk factors that have led or contributed to the death of patients.

Diabetic, hypertensive heart disease and should not be neglected. These comorbidities put together 10 cases so far. Another group that draws attention are the people with a mental disability, with five records. Yesterday, two people with Down Syndrome were in the list released by the government gaucho. The list is wide and reaches up to epileptics and schizophrenia.

The statistics point to another curiosity: children and the elderly, the health authorities pointed as priorities within the risk groups are not among the main victims. Of the 70 victims, 51 were between 20 and 49 years. Only four were over 60 and two under four years.

- Everyone has to avoid, but they should keep the extra caution, even with the decline of the cold. Contagion decreases, but the virus still there - alert the director of the Center State of Health Surveillance (Cevs), Francisco Peace

Despite the good news regarding the fall of admissions in ICUs, which led the Secretary of Health to announce a reduction in the rate of the disease, cases of death should not stop soon. Peace estimated that the number of deaths reaches 200 in the state.

- We have about 130 deaths reported waiting for exams. About 80% to 85% of the results are confirmed. This will not surprise - the director maintains Cevs.

Confirmations of yesterday not surprised authorities

The latest confirmed cases by the State Government took place between July 20 and Wednesday, but were released yesterday because of high demand dammed tests in laboratories in the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and State (Lacen), responsible for issuing of reports to the Rio Grande do Sul

- We received a lot of reports over the weekend and these new cases do not cause us surprise, because expected - suggests Peace
