DRC: The disease that is decimating Kwango resembles respiratory failure due to severe seasonal flu, according to the Minister of Health
 • Thursday, December 5, 2024 - 6:36 p.m.
The Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention, Roger Kamba, presented this Thursday, December 5, an update on the disease of unknown origin that is raging in the province of Kwango, particularly in the health zone of Panzi. During a press conference, he revealed that the first analyses carried out by health experts dispatched to the site suggest a respiratory distress syndrome, although in-depth investigations are still underway to identify the exact causes of this epidemic.

To date, 382 cases have been recorded, 40% of which are children. The minister also reported 27 deaths recorded in health care facilities, including 10 related to severe anaemia due to lack of transfusion and 17 attributed to respiratory distress. In addition, 44 deaths have been reported by community sources, although their direct link to the disease remains to be confirmed.
"We received, at the end of last week, a public health alert from the Panzi health zone, located approximately 417 km from Kenge, in a remote region with impassable roads, especially during this rainy season. On site, our teams identified a clinical picture marked by fever, cough, runny nose, headaches, body aches and, in some serious cases, respiratory distress," explained Minister Roger Kamba.
The minister raised the possibility that this disease is linked to a particularly virulent seasonal flu, exacerbated by the vulnerability of local populations, often affected by malnutrition and other comorbidities.
"We are in the seasonal flu period, which extends from October to March. It is possible that we are dealing with a severe form of flu affecting a population weakened by malnutrition and anemia. The observed mortality rates, around 7.8%, do not correspond to the profile of Covid-19, but we remain cautious in our analyses," he added.
To better understand and control this epidemic, the government has mobilized experts, including epidemiologists, laboratory technicians and provincial doctors, in collaboration with the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB).
The minister, however, wanted to be reassuring: "We believe that this is a phenomenon that we will be able to contain locally, once we have identified the exact cause."
The minister also stressed that 61% of children in Kwango province suffer from malnutrition, which could worsen the effects of this disease. Roger Kamba reminded the population of the importance of observing basic hygiene rules to limit the spread of the epidemic.

UNIDENTIFIED DISEASE IN PANZI IN KWANGO: SITUATION UPDATE BY THE MINISTER OF HEALTH
Christian KAZEMBE
Dec 5, 2024

Kinshasa, December 5, 2024

This Thursday, December 5, 2024, a press conference was held at the Salon Bleu of the Government Building to take stock of the outbreak of a disease not yet identified in the Panzi health zone, located 417 km from Kenge, in the Kwango province.

His Excellency the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, Dr. Samuel Roger Kamba, opened this conference by specifying that his services were alerted at the end of last week about a disease affecting this remote region, which is difficult to access, especially during the rainy season (two days' drive from Kenge). The disease is said to have broken out since October 24, 2024. To date, 27 deaths have been reported in health facilities, including 10 due to a lack of blood transfusions. The local community reported 44 additional cases, and 382 cases were confirmed.

As soon as the alert was issued, a first emergency team, composed of the Kwango provincial doctor, three epidemiologists, a laboratory technician and two experts, was sent to the site to carry out an initial assessment of the situation.

A second assessment was carried out on 3 December 2024 by the national health authorities. Although the results of laboratory tests are still awaited, initial information indicates 27 deaths in health facilities and 40 other deaths reported by the community.

The symptoms observed are similar to those of seasonal flu, including fever, cough, runny nose, headache and body aches. Some cases show signs of respiratory distress and anemia. These elements make it possible to rule out, for the time being, the hypothesis of COVID-19 and to direct investigations towards a possible severe seasonal flu epidemic.

The area concerned is particularly vulnerable, having been weakened by a typhoid fever epidemic two years ago. In addition, the supply of medicines remains problematic, and child malnutrition is a worrying phenomenon, with 61 malnourished children recorded in this region. Around 40% of children are currently affected by this disease of still unknown origin.

The results of the analyses are expected in about three days. In the meantime, a central team from the Ministry of Health is preparing to go to the site to strengthen response actions. As soon as the results are received, the Ministry of Health will determine the strategy to adopt to control this worrying situation.

The Minister reaffirmed that the alert is maximum and that measures will be taken as soon as possible. In addition, a mapping of symptoms is underway to help identify the disease in question more precisely.

Taking the opportunity, Dr. Samuel Roger Kamba, assisted by Director Dieudonné Mwamba, also provided an update on the Mpox situation, which is stabilizing. From nearly 800 cases recorded in the 48th week, this number has now been reduced to 400 in the 49th week, he said. The recent participation of the DRC in a conference on the fight against Mpox in Congo-Brazzaville has helped improve the vaccination strategy.

The second phase of vaccination in the first six provinces concerned by this action will begin next week, announced Dieudonné Mwamba.

The Ministry of Public Health remains fully committed to controlling this situation and is doing everything possible to protect the population.

DRC-Kwango: 12 new cases and 3 deaths linked to the unknown Panzi disease (INSP-COUSP report)

Friday, December 6, 2024 - 1:31 p.m.

The Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHOC), under the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), has released a report on the disease of unknown origin that is plaguing the Panzi health zone in Kwango province. The report indicates that 12 new cases and 3 deaths have been recorded since December 4, 2024, bringing the cumulative total to 394 cases and 30 deaths. The reported deaths mainly come from local health facilities, according to the head of the operations section of the PHOC.

Dr. Kitenge Richard, also a signatory of the report, said that transmission occurs mainly within households. “We generally observe that it is the parents who contaminate the children, or vice versa,” he explained. Regarding patient care, the report highlights several difficulties encountered on the ground, including insufficient logistics for the mobility of health teams, a lack of secure funds to support operations, and insufficient epidemiological staff, with only two epidemiologists present.

The report also notes the absence of pre-positioned emergency drug kits, untrained providers in Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR3), and an early warning system. These gaps make response efforts particularly complicated.

The Panzi region is also regularly affected by other epidemics such as Konzo, cholera, malaria and salmonellosis, often aggravated by high rates of malnutrition among children and adolescents. This fragile situation amplifies the impact of the current disease.

At a press conference in Kinshasa on December 5, Health Minister Roger Kamba said the disease could be linked to severe seasonal influenza, causing respiratory distress. He said the outbreak, first reported on October 24, is currently affecting 7 of the 30 health areas in the Panzi zone, including Makita Panzi, Tsakala Panzi, Kambandambi, Kasanji, Kiama, Kanzangi and Mwiningulu.

The health situation in Panzi remains worrying, and the authorities are calling for urgent mobilisation to contain the spread of this disease.

WHO supports Democratic Republic of the Congo reinforce efforts to diagnose disease in remote area

06 December 2024

Kinshasa – World Health Organization (WHO) is deploying experts to support health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo carry out further investigations to determine the cause of a yet undiagnosed disease that has been reported in Panzi, a locality in Kwango province in the southwest of the country. Laboratory tests are being conducted to determine the cause.

The WHO experts are joining the National Rapid Response Team and are on their way to Panzi. The team comprises epidemiologists, clinicians, laboratory technicians and infection prevention and control, and risk communication experts. An initial local WHO team has been supporting the health authorities in Kwango since the end of November to reinforce disease surveillance and identify cases.

The experts being deployed are also delivering essential medicines, diagnostic and sample collection kits to help rapidly analyse and determine the cause of the illness. The team will focus on strengthening response measures such as epidemiological investigation and collection of samples for testing, active case finding, treatment and public awareness activities. The team will also work with community leaders to support disease surveillance and promote measures to prevent infection and to identify and report further cases.

“Our priority is to provide effective support to the affected families and communities. All efforts are underway to identify the cause of the illness, understand its modes of transmission and ensure appropriate response as swiftly as possible,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, 394 cases and 30 deaths have been reported so far in Panzi health zone. Symptoms of the illness include headache, cough, fever, breathing difficulties and anaemia. Until laboratory test results are received, the cause is unclear.

Panzi is a rural community located more than 700 km from the capital Kinshasa. Access by road is difficult and communication network is limited. So far, the disease has been reported in seven of the 30 health zones in Kwango province. Most cases are reported in three of the seven affected health zones. A respiratory pathogen such as Influenza or COVID-19 is being investigated as a possible cause, as well as malaria, measles and others.

WHO will share more information about efforts to identify the disease as soon as available.

Unknown disease in Panzi: medical care team faces logistical difficulties

Published on Fri, 06/12/2024 - 15:03 | Modified on Fri, 06/12/2024 - 15:03

The medical team deployed in the Panzi area of Kwango, composed of epidemiologists, laboratory technicians and other health professionals, faces many difficulties that hamper their work.

According to testimonies collected on the ground, these experts are facing logistical and mobility problems in the field, as well as a lack of funds to carry out the response. The insufficient staffing is making the situation worse: only two epidemiologists are available to manage this crisis.

Challenges also include insufficient emergency kits and medicines, the absence of an early warning system – equivalent to an epidemiological intelligence centre – and a lack of training for local providers.

Since the outbreak of the unknown disease last October, more than a hundred deaths have been recorded, according to local sources.

During a press conference held on Thursday, December 5 in Kinshasa, the Minister of Health, Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba, affirmed that the Government is on high alert in the face of the emergency caused by the emergence of this hitherto unknown disease.

expert reaction to unknown illness in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Scientists comment on an unknown illness in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Prof Paul Hunter, Professor in Medicine, UEA, said:

“We still know very little about this other than so far there have been 376 people reported as affected and 79 dead, however given the difficulties in identifying mild infections in Central Africa, the infection likely has a much lower mortality rate than these figures would suggest. The illness appears to be predominantly a respiratory infection with symptoms

Someone asked me what I thought this disease is and I replied:

Well...the DRC has so many disease problems that it literally could be anything. Additionally, much of the population there is malnourished and not at their optimal health. Even mild seasonal flu could cause increased deaths.

Here are examples of the disease situations (scroll to the last post on each thread to see the latest):

Congo and mysterious epidemic, what should Italy do? Ciccozzi: “Monitoring immediately, also on flights”. Bassetti: “That country is Pandora's box for viruses”

The epidemiologist: “The real problem is the lack of information, even more relevant less than 20 days from the Jubilee. Now, Ciccozzi recalls, " the WHO has sent a team of specialists to Congo to investigate. The hope is that the presumed virus will be identified and sequenced. Only after this step do we know what we are talking about. With today's systems, even 24 hours are enough to get the result". “Monitor incoming flights from Congo”

But what should Italy do, especially now that we are on the threshold of the Jubilee? “We must set up a national epidemiological monitoring. Every time we record flu-like cases, we must understand what it is, even with a swab , to rule out that it is the flu or Covid.
