Health Minister Rafael S?nchez C?rdenas reported Wednesday that authorities have detected at least five cases of covid-19 patients who have been reinfected with the coronavirus.

S?nchez C?rdenas explained that Public Health investigates the cases of those patients who with the first "positive" polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and who, after overcoming the viral load, give "negative" results, but later they present symptoms and return to be "positive".

He indicated that the Dominican Republic will notify these cases to the World Health Organization (WHO), in addition to investigating whether a laboratory error was made in the application of the PCR tests.

The official reported that the number of covid-19 infections in the Dominican Republic increased to 28,631, with 695 cases in the last 24 hours, and the deaths to 691, with 16 new fatalities. The case-fatality rate stood at 2.41% and 66.13 people per million inhabitants.

A total of 182 patients are in intensive care units (ICU): 50% in centers of Greater Santo Domingo, 26.92% in Santiago and 14.84% in Duarte.

S?nchez C?rdenas insisted that citizens must respect the curfew, physical distancing and the use of masks.

He explained that Public Health coordinates with the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) the procedure in which the fines will be applied to citizens who circulate without masks.

He trusted that the presidential and congressional votes on July 5 will be able to proceed without major problems and that he will continue to report on the pandemic, because "the elections do not suspend covid-19 in the Dominican Republic."

Covid-19 and its ravages in the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) Covid-19 has the Dominican Republic in trouble today after a major outbreak of re-emergence from the economic reopening, the electoral process that ended on July 5 and social indiscipline.

Every day Dominicans await the special bulletin where the figures for the last 24 hours are released, to see if the pandemic subsides, but just the opposite occurs, the disease grows and contagions increase.

Currently, according to health authorities, the number of infected is 50 thousand 113 people and the deceased reached 942, important figures for the number of inhabitants and the size of the country.

But perhaps what worries everyone most is the response that health facilities can give to the growing number of patients and especially in the main Dominican cities.

The Minister of Health, Rafael S?nchez, expressed this Friday that the hospitals were not collapsed, but that from there to being there is only one step.

Currently the country is at 83 percent hospital occupancy as it has 1,216 admitted patients, 245 of them in Intensive Care Units, that is, 69.4 of its capacity.

And in Greater Santo Domingo, one of the territories where the situation is most critical, hospital occupation is at 86 percent, and in the case of the Santiago province it is located at 96, hence that territory has been intervened today to try mitigate the effects of the pandemic.

Before this situation, the Dominican government decided to request the State of Emergency again to the Congress of the Republic, in this case for 45 days, to try to stop the spread of the virus with distancing measures and limitation of movements, among others, of course touch curfew included.

The opposition, which will be in power from August 16, supports the request, a notable change after the executive's last requests refused to support those measures that for many are necessary.

The Dominican Republic is currently facing a health situation with great consequences in which the death toll could grow dangerously, according to specialists.

Now the pressures that were from the political, electoral and economic point of view come to light among the causes that led to the outbreak of the pandemic.

In the opinion of local analysts, this new state of emergency and the measures it entails will subject the country to a strong economic burden and will see how far it can bear it.
