The Ministry of Public Health confirmed the first case of coronavirus imported (COVID-19) in the Dominican Republic.

Minister Rafael S?nchez C?rdenas reported that it is an Italian citizen who arrived in the country without symptoms of the virus.

The information was offered through a press conference in which other health authorities of the country and the Emergency Operations Service (COE) participate.

Public Health asks the population to take the official information offered by that entity and not be alarmed by the unofficial texts disseminated through social networks.

The confirmed Italian is in the Ram?n de Lara military hospital, located in San Isidro. The director of the hospital said that the patient arrived at dawn on February 29.

SANTO DOMINGO. -The Ministry of Public Health reported on Wednesday the positive diagnosis of 13 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the number of people with this disease to 34. The entity also reported a new death for a total of two deaths from the coronavirus.

The Health Minister, Dr. Rafael S?nchez C?rdenas, pointed out that these new cases are linked to the Costa Fabulosa cruise ship, which set sail from La Romana where 110 Dominicans disembarked, 17 of them have already arrived in the country and another nine are expected to arrive tomorrow.

The Minister of Health said that an agreement was signed with the Amadita and Reference laboratories to carry out the tests.

He also said that the signing of the agreement is endorsed by the World Health Organization PAHO / WHO and the agreed cost is RD $ 4,300.00 for each of the tests carried out and that he is authorized only to use the Berlin protocol as recommended by the WHO and preferably when necessary.

He also reported that patients must have a medical indication obtained through a doctor whose specialty is pulmonology, infectious medicine, internist, epidemiologist or any other doctor duly certified by the Dominican State.

Country-Specific Information:

• The Dominican Republic has 1,488 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 68 confirmed deaths.
• Flights to the U.S. are available through Jet Blue and Delta. Book flights directly through https://www.jetblue.com/ and www.delta.com. U.S. citizens who wish to depart the Dominican Republic should do so immediately or be prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.
• The Dominican Republic has put in place a number of measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 including:
  • • A national curfew that prohibits all traffic and movement of people from 5pm to 6am.
    • Creation of a national hotline for questions relating to COVID-19 if you have been exposed or are experiencing severe symptoms. Call *462 for further instructions, but note that English-speaking operators are limited.
    • Cruise arrivals have been suspended at all ports and coasts.
    • Public transportation, including buses, shared minibuses (guaguas), metro trains, and cable cars have suspended services, limiting the public’s ability to move freely in urban areas.
    • Events and public gatherings of all kinds suspended.
