Xinhua News Agency: On March 30, China held the "Forum on Traditional Chinese Medicine and International Cooperation to Fight Against COVID-19 Pandemic". Could you give us more details, the outcomes and consensus reached, for example?

Hua Chunying: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly held the online and offline "Forum on Traditional Chinese Medicine and International Cooperation to Fight Against COVID-19 Pandemic" on March 30. Political leaders and government officials from 28 countries and regions including President of Zimbabwe Mnangagwa and Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Stefanishyna, WHO representatives and experts had in-depth exchanges through video link.

Sun Chunlan, Vice Premier of the State Council said in her opening address that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a jewel of the Chinese people. Throughout the fight against COVID-19, TCM has all along played an active role. The eight editions of Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for COVID-19 Patients with Chinese characteristics were formulated by combining TCM with Western medicine. The efficacy of TCM products including the well-know three drugs and three formulas have been proven through practice. China has also been sharing its experience in using TCM for prevention, control and treatment without reservation. We stand ready to work with all countries to deepen cooperation in TCM basic theory, clinical efficacy and international standard, and to enable traditional medicine and modern medicine to interact and draw upon each other's strength, so as to better serve the health and welfare of all humanity.

The forum delivered three outcomes. First, it adopted the Initiative on Supporting the Application of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Global Fight Against COVID-19. The initiative called for renewed commitment to multilateralism to jointly deal with the pandemic, to take stock of and promote wider adoption of good practice, to continue applying traditional medicine to safeguard people's health, and to enhance international cooperation for the development of traditional medicine. Second, the forum paid tribute to the unique role played by TCM in treating COVID-19 cases. Ministerial officials of 13 participating countries and officials from relevant departments of the Hong Kong and Macao SAR governments shared how they leveraged the role, characteristics and advantages of traditional medicine with TCM as a representative. Third, the forum laid the groundwork for cooperation among participating countries in fighting COVID-19 with traditional medicine. The officials and experts agreed to strengthen solidarity and promote cooperation in traditional medicine. The forum is of positive significance for our continued fight against COVID-19.

WHO origin hunters push back as report assailed on all sides

(April 1): Nearly three dozen scientists vetted by the World Health Organization and the Chinese government gathered in Wuhan, China, early this winter to start the arduous task of finding the origins of Covid-19 and determining how it spread like wildfire around the world.

Six weeks after that trip, the working group this week delivered an analysis that laid out four possible scenarios and recommended next steps for digging deeper to find the pandemic?s genesis. The 123-page report, and a nearly 200-page supplement, was immediately engulfed by criticism, with a dozen nations including the U.S., the U.K. and Japan questioning its structure and insights.

The most unexpected detractor was WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who helped negotiate the details of the trip and agreed to the scope of the work back in July. He said the theory that the virus escaped via a laboratory accident needed to be more thoroughly vetted, a hypothesis that has been vigorously denied by the Chinese government.

?There?s obviously a lot of politics,? said John Mackenzie, an Australian virologist who led a 2003 WHO-convened mission in China to study the origins of SARS, leaving him well-versed on the delicacies of undertaking such a study. ?He should be standing by his committee?s report.?

?I just find it very strange that he?s demeaning it and he?s deflecting from it,? said Mackenzie, an emeritus professor at Curtain University in Perth who serves on the WHO?s emergency committee for Covid-19...

I have a had a chance to read all 120 of the report which is excellent.
Confirmed human cases well before the first cluster identified in the fish market show it not to have been the source. The first confirmed cases were in Hubei in week 52 of 2019. The swabs from the market show plenty of positive sample of surface contamination by humans in the market but none in any animal sold in the market or any of the frozen foods. The environmental samples were found on stalls of all types not congregated in on product. Test on the suppliers to the market found nothing in their animals nor has any animal been found with any intermediate form of the virus. There has been extensive sampling of all food animals - all negative.
The only animal samples found prior to the pandemic were the know bats and pangolins both of which are a 1000+ nucleotide distant from Sars-CoV-2 despite 10s of thousands of tests.
No serologically positive samples predate the know cases.
There is no increase in all cause mortality, SARI, pneumonia or ILI cases above baseline before 2020.
None of the WIV staff, or any other lab, have SARS-CoV-2 antibodies or had any COVID like illness.
Several methods of estimating the date of the first case all point to around early November.

Fact Sheet: Activity at the Wuhan Institute of Virology
Home | News & Events | Fact Sheet: Activity at the Wuhan Institute of Virology

For more than a year, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has systematically prevented a transparent and thorough investigation of the COVID-19 pandemic?s origin, choosing instead to devote enormous resources to deceit and disinformation. Nearly two million people have died. Their families deserve to know the truth. Only through transparency can we learn what caused this pandemic and how to prevent the next one.

The U.S. government does not know exactly where, when, or how the COVID-19 virus?known as SARS-CoV-2?was transmitted initially to humans. We have not determined whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

The virus could have emerged naturally from human contact with infected animals, spreading in a pattern consistent with a natural epidemic. Alternatively, a laboratory accident could resemble a natural outbreak if the initial exposure included only a few individuals and was compounded by asymptomatic infection. Scientists in China have researched animal-derived coronaviruses under conditions that increased the risk for accidental and potentially unwitting exposure.

The CCP?s deadly obsession with secrecy and control comes at the expense of public health in China and around the world. The previously undisclosed information in this fact sheet, combined with open-source reporting, highlights three elements about COVID-19?s origin that deserve greater scrutiny:

1. Illnesses inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV):
  • The U.S. government has reason to believe that several researchers inside the WIV became sick in autumn 2019, before the first identified case of the outbreak, with symptoms consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses. This raises questions about the credibility of WIV senior researcher Shi Zhengli?s public claim that there was ?zero infection? among the WIV?s staff and students of SARS-CoV-2 or SARS-related viruses.
  • Accidental infections in labs have caused several previous virus outbreaks in China and elsewhere, including a 2004 SARS outbreak in Beijing that infected nine people, killing one.
  • The CCP has prevented independent journalists, investigators, and global health authorities from interviewing researchers at the WIV, including those who were ill in the fall of 2019. Any credible inquiry into the origin of the virus must include interviews with these researchers and a full accounting of their previously unreported illness.
2. Research at the WIV:
  • Starting in at least 2016 ? and with no indication of a stop prior to the COVID-19 outbreak ? WIV researchers conducted experiments involving RaTG13, the bat coronavirus identified by the WIV in January 2020 as its closest sample to SARS-CoV-2 (96.2% similar). The WIV became a focal point for international coronavirus research after the 2003 SARS outbreak and has since studied animals including mice, bats, and pangolins.
  • The WIV has a published record of conducting ?gain-of-function? research to engineer chimeric viruses. But the WIV has not been transparent or consistent about its record of studying viruses most similar to the COVID-19 virus, including ?RaTG13,? which it sampled from a cave in Yunnan Province in 2013 after several miners died of SARS-like illness.
  • WHO investigators must have access to the records of the WIV?s work on bat and other coronaviruses before the COVID-19 outbreak. As part of a thorough inquiry, they must have a full accounting of why the WIV altered and then removed online records of its work with RaTG13 and other viruses.
3. Secret military activity at the WIV:
  • Secrecy and non-disclosure are standard practice for Beijing. For many years the United States has publicly raised concerns about China?s past biological weapons work, which Beijing has neither documented nor demonstrably eliminated, despite its clear obligations under the Biological Weapons Convention.
  • Despite the WIV presenting itself as a civilian institution, the United States has determined that the WIV has collaborated on publications and secret projects with China?s military. The WIV has engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017.
  • The United States and other donors who funded or collaborated on civilian research at the WIV have a right and obligation to determine whether any of our research funding was diverted to secret Chinese military projects at the WIV.
Today?s revelations just scratch the surface of what is still hidden about COVID-19?s origin in China. Any credible investigation into the origin of COVID-19 demands complete, transparent access to the research labs in Wuhan, including their facilities, samples, personnel, and records.

As the world continues to battle this pandemic ? and as WHO investigators begin their work, after more than a year of delays ? the virus?s origin remains uncertain. The United States will continue to do everything it can to support a credible and thorough investigation, including by continuing to demand transparency on the part of Chinese authorities.

Opinion: What if the former CDC director is right about the Wuhan labs?

Ingrained narratives are hard to correct. In his biographical essay ?Why Orwell Matters,? Christopher Hitchens quotes George Orwell on the ?power of facing unpleasant facts.? Orwell knew it was difficult but important to pull back from our political affiliations, biases and past conclusions to reckon with uncomfortable realities and potentially explosive questions ? questions such as: What if Robert Redfield is right about the Wuhan labs?
...
Richard H. Ebright, a Rutgers University microbiologist and biosafety expert, told me we must begin a difficult, uncomfortable conversation about this investigation?s scope and the vast implications if the theory is true. He said the entire genre of research Redfield was referring to, known as gain-of-function research (in which viruses are captured from the wild and developed in lab settings to make them more dangerous), needs to be thoroughly reexamined.

?The very fact that it could have been of laboratory origin, even if that cannot be substantiated, means we need to understand that there is risk in this research that may have triggered the current pandemic and surely could trigger a future pandemic,? he said.

It has just had years devoted to its reexamination but Ebright, Lipsitch et.al did not win the argument and are still griping about it.

no, I mean a possible smaller, recombination, not the spike. Some evidence for a recent
common anchester in that area. In a low mutation area, though. But I didn't see
this in other bat-viruses.
Meanwhile we also got PrC31 with some other close areas with other sarbeco.
But the 2 nucleotides in >1000 positions remains top.

I do expect (70% , 3y) that firmish conclusion. It usually happens.
The smoking pangolin or whatever.

The Wuhan Laboratory Origin of SARS-CoV-2 and the Validity of the Yan Reports Are Further Proved by the Failure of Two Uninvited "Peer Reviews"

Yan, Li-Meng; Kang, Shu; Guan, Jie; Hu, Shanchang

The origin of SARS-CoV-2 is a question that has attracted attention from all over the world. It has been portrayed by some as a great mystery, although the laboratory nature of this virus is evident to people with trained eyes. The fundamental reason for this current situation is a large-scale, multi-domain, deliberate scientific misinformation. In an effort to defeat this scientific misinformation and expose the true nature of SARS-CoV-2, we have published two scientific reports. Our first report showed, using substantial evidence and logical analyses, why SARS-CoV-2 must be a laboratory product and how it could be created conveniently by following well-known concepts and established techniques. Our second report exposed a large-scale, organized scientific fraud, through which the nature of SARS-CoV-2 as an Unrestricted Bioweapon was revealed. Our efforts were immediately met by great resistance. Within ten days of the publication of our first report, two self-claimed ?peer reviews? came out to specifically criticize our report. The first review was published by four scientists from the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security led by Dr. Gigi Gronvall. The second review was published on the MIT Press and produced by a group of four scientists led by Dr. Robert Gallo. Although we welcome critical reviews of our reports, such reviews have to be honest, logical, evidence-based, and produced by qualified scientists. These two reviews, however, did not meet any of the criteria. Unfortunately, these poor reviews were nonetheless used by the media to defame our reports, label laboratory origin theories as ?conspiracy theories?, and further suppress the truth of SARS-CoV-2 origin. Building on these media reports, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime then greatly amplified its own voice and promoted the falsified theory that SARS-CoV-2 must have come from nature. In a continued effort to fight and defeat scientific misinformation, here we provide our point-to-point responses to these reviews. Part I of the document is our responses to the MIT Press review, and Part II is our responses to the review published by the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. We also included an opening statement at the beginning, where we summarized the main events of the Unrestricted Scientific Misinformation, including various cover-ups executed by individuals having close ties with the CCP regime, as well as Dr. Yan?s sustained efforts in exposing the truth of COVID-19. We sincerely hope that this document may help the world recognize the ongoing misinformation campaign and come to the realization that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is an Unrestricted Bioweapon developed by the CCP regime. We believe that this realization is crucial in defeating the COVID-19 pandemic and in protecting the global community from future bioweapon attacks.

Then there is the chance covid-19 is the result of a laboratory accident. If that?s true, it would bring the sharpest consequences, especially for scientists like those in charge of finding the virus?s origin. If the pandemic was caused by ambitious, high-tech research on dangerous germs, it would mean China?s fast rise as a biotech powerhouse is a threat to the globe. It would mean this type of science should be severely restricted, or even banned, in China and everywhere else. More than any other hypothesis, a government-sponsored technology program run amok?along with early efforts to conceal news of the outbreak?would establish a case for retribution. ?If this is a man-made catastrophe,? says Miles Yu, an analyst with the conservative Hudson Institute, ?I think the world should seek reparations.?

Unexpected novel Merbecovirus discoveries in agricultural sequencing datasets from Wuhan, China

In this study we document the unexpected discovery of multiple coronaviruses and a BSL-3 pathogen in agricultural cotton and rice sequencing datasets. In particular, we have identified a novel HKU5-related Merbecovirus in a cotton dataset sequenced by the Huazhong Agricultural University in 2017.

We have also found an infectious clone sequence containing a novel HKU4-related Merbecovirus related to MERS coronavirus in a rice dataset sequenced by the Huazhong Agricultural University in early 2020.

Another HKU5-related Merbecovirus, as well as Japanese encephalitis virus, were identified in a cotton dataset sequenced by the Huazhong Agricultural University in 2018. An HKU3-related Betacoronavirus was found in a Mus musculus sequencing dataset from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2017.

Finally, a SARS-WIV1-like Betacoronavirus was found in a rice dataset sequenced by the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in 2017.

Using the contaminating reads we have extracted from the above datasets, we were able to assemble complete genomes of two novel coronaviruses which we disclose herein. In light of our findings, we raise concerns about biosafety protocol breaches, as indicated by our discovery of multiple dangerous human pathogens in agricultural sequencing laboratories in Wuhan and Fouzou City, China.
