BEIJING, March 3 (Reuters) - The impact of bird flu and the economic slowdown may have cut China's poultry numbers by about a third or more in the last month, executives in the poultry feed industry said on Tuesday.

Although China has not disclosed any significant outbreaks of bird flu or the extent of the impact on the industry, feed company executives say the sector has suffered a dual blow from disease and a drop in demand that could keep stocks in short supply into the third quarter.

"There have been very few restocks after the Chinese Lunar New Year. Poultry stocks could have fallen by 30 to 40 percent compared to last year," said one executive from a leading feed and poultry producer.

A recent outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in Wuhan City of Hubei Province led to a mass slaughter of local poultry. Local residents report that cases of human infections have occurred in Wuhan’s Huangbei and Xinzhou districts. Local media has completely censored all news about the outbreak. According to a source from Dongxihu District of Wuhan, many chickens have been killed after bird flu broke out in Liji Town of Dongxihu. The source said that several hundreds of thousands of chickens have already been slaughtered in Xinzhou.

Ms. Zhang, a resident of Liji, said that many places in Wuhan have been affected by the bird flu, but the media is forbidden to report related news. She said, “The media aren’t allowed to mention it, and we aren’t allowed to discuss it with outsiders.”

Other locals have also reported cases of bird flu infections, and the mass slaughtering of chickens, in urban areas of Wuhan.

Ms. Chen, who lives close to Wuhan, said that people who have killed their chickens have not received the promised compensation from the authorities. She said that she has twice culled her flock, but received nothing from the authorities.

In January, eight people from Beijing, Shandong, Guizhou, Shanxi, Xinjiang, Guangdong and Hunan were infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus. Five of the eight infected died. On February 10, Chinese Communist Party officials publicly announced that the first bird flu outbreak occurred in the Hetian Area in Xinjiang Province. To date, no information on the bird flu outbreak in Wuhan has been officially reported.

Hong Kong birdflu outbreak blamed on wild birds

An outbreak of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus at a Hong Kong farm last year which led to the slaughter of 90,000 chickens was most likely spread by wild birds.


A team of government scientists has been investigating the outbreak near the border with China last December, which was the first at a Hong Kong poultry farm in six years.

"As with many epidemiological studies of this nature, it is difficult to determine the exact cause of the outbreak," leading scientist Thomas Sit said.

But he said the virus was "most likely to have been introduced to the farm by wild birds", playing down concerns the outbreak might have represented a mutation in the virus.

He said dust and dirt near the entrance of an affected chicken shed could have been contaminated by droppings from infected wild birds and blown into the shed area by a gust of wind.

However the scientists say other sources of the virus, such as rodents or contaminated clothing of farm staff, could not be ruled out.

Agriculture department director Cheung Siu-hing says officials will increase the number of farm inspections and boost routine blood sampling, but said further outbreaks could not be totally avoided.

"It is difficult, if not impossible, to say we can 100 percent prevent the spread of avian flu. That's why we have to learn from each incident. We can't afford to be complacent," she told reporters.

The outbreak was discovered after a dead chicken was found at the farm in the New Territories area of Hong Kong.

All chickens within a 3km radius of the farm were slaughtered, local farms were barred from selling chickens and eggs for 21 days and imports of chickens were banned for the same period.

China, the world?s biggest meat and poultry producer, faces high risks of animal disease outbreaks this year as new strains emerge and cases of bird flu rise, the country?s top veterinarian said.

China?s flagging economy has already slowed demand for meat and poultry, crimping sales of animal feed. Threat of disease has prompted farmers to cut hog and fowl numbers, further reducing demand for soybeans and corn, the main ingredients in feed.

?Disease outbreaks have been sporadic so far,? which doesn?t indicate any epidemics, Jia said. Still, the so-called type A foot and mouth disease is a challenge to deal with as no vaccines are commercially available, he said. Last month Shanghai veterinarians culled 440 cows after an outbreak of the type A foot-and-mouth disease.
