Human cases of avian influenza type A (H5N1) in China

CONCLUSIONS

These four confirmed cases of avian influenza A(H5N1) in humans all occurred in geographically distinct areas of China. The cases are epidemiologically unrelated though one of them may represent a mother and child pair.

The occurrence of these temporally associated 4 cases in three weeks does not indicate a change in the characteristics of the H5N1 virus, but more probably the result of a combination of factors.

These are (1) a natural increase observed at this time each year, (2) increased exposure of populations in contact with poultry in the context of the preparation for the Chinese New Year, perhaps complicated (3) by heightened awareness and testing of potential cases.

More cases may occur in the coming weeks as the Chinese New Year will result in large scale travel of populations and in trade and preparation of poultry.

Such sporadic cases are expected in a country where avian influenza is entrenched. While these cases not represent any increase in risk to Europe from A(H5N1) equally there has been no diminution of that risk.

There needs to be continued vigilance and ECDC, working with WHO, animal health colleagues and international partners will monitor the situation carefully.

Hong Kong: 12 Hong Kong Students hospitalised at Chengdu, Sichuan (1/23/2009) [CHP]

The students are members of a group of students and teachers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The group arrived at Chengdu on January 17 and is scheduled to return to Hong Kong via Chongqing today.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health has liaised with Chengdu health authority with regard to the medical conditions of the affected students.

The 12 affected students experienced mild flu like symptoms such as sore throat and cough since January 19.

One of them was diagnosed to have chest infection, and is now in stable condition.

They have been admitted to the West China Hospital, Sichuan University.

According to the clinical diagnosis of the attending doctor, the students have ordinary seasonal influenza.

They have not had contact with any poultry.

The relevant Government departments will continue to liaise with the Mainland authorities, with a view to providing assistance to the affected students.

The Department of Health will follow up on the medical conditions of the students when they return to Hong Kong.

Furthermore, the other 18 students and their tutors did not experience flu like symptoms.

They will return to Hong Kong later today as scheduled.

It also advised people to consult doctors immediately if they developed fever or flu-like illnesses after travelling to China or other affected areas.
Hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong people are spending this week's Chinese lunar New Year holiday with relatives in neighboring mainland China.
Hong Kong saw the first modern outbreak of bird flu to infect humans in 1997 when six people died and eight others fell ill from the H5N1 virus.

MALAYSIA has banned the import of chicken from China due to the bird flu virus which has killed five people in the republic. Veterinary Services Department director-general Datuk Dr Abd Aziz Jamaluddin said the ban, effective Jan 16, would only be lifted when the situation in China returned to normal.

"We don't have to worry about a shortage of supply as all private sector companies in the country which import chicken from China have enough stock for three months," he said here yesterday.

He added that the department had permanently frozen the import of chicken from Thailand since last year due to the virus.

"We cannot take chances as the breakout hit the country two years ago," he said, referring to the outbreak, and spread, of the Avian flu virus in Paya Jaras Hilir, Sg Buloh.

China had reported a total of six cases of H5N1 virus this year, with the latest being the death of an 18-year-old youth in the South China province on Jan 26.

Other deaths included a 19-year-old teenager in Beijing on Jan 5, a 27-year-old woman in Shandong on Jan 17, a 16-year-old boy in Hunan on Jan 20 and a 31-year-old woman in Xinjiang on Jan 23.
