A Very Sad Day in North America

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

Fox News is now reporting the killer as Adam Lanza, 20:

The shooter, who sources identified as Adam Lanza, 20, gunned down his mother and her entire class at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., according to sources. Lanza was found dead inside the school, according to officials. Eighteen of the children and six more adults were dead at the school and two more children died later, according to Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance.

Vance would not confirm the shooter's name, and earlier in the day there were conflicting reports over the gunman's identity. Law enforcement sources told FoxNews.com the shooter was Lanza. His brother, Ryan Lanza, 24, was in custody, but it was not sure if he faced charges.

[I still don't think this is right. Ryan Lanza does not appear to be in custody either, judging by his Facebook updates. And who is the second man arrested? - alert]

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

3:54 p.m. This is confusing, and we are going to get this sorted for you. The New York Post is reporting that the shooter is Adam Lanza not Ryan. Ryan is his brother and according to the Post's sources, Ryan is actually the brother being questioned. NBC is reporting that the shooter was carrying his brother's identification, hence the confusion. CNN is no longer identifying the shooter as Ryan Lanza:

Police Raid Sandy Hook Home Hours After Shooting
Police haven't yet disclosed what they are looking for on Yogananda Street.

Police have raided a home in the Sandy Hook part of Newtown, a show of investigative force that comes just hours after a gunman shot students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary today, killing as many as 27.

There were at least 15 police cars at 36 Yogananda St. as of 2:13 p.m. There are multiple armed police officers there, including one with a rifle at his side.

The 3,000-square-foot home is owned by Nancy and Peter Lanza and was built in 1998, according to property records.

"When I moved here it was beautiful. Still is beautiful," said neighbor Jim McDade. "When we came up here we found out what quiet was...My wife's at work and wants to come home. She can't concentrate well. ... You hear things like Columbine and all the other tragedies that take place, and say my God... If ther:(http://newtown.patch.com/articles/police-raid-sandy-hook-house

I edited some of the earlier articles that incorrectly identified the shooter. I left the links intact if people want to go to the sources.

On the ABC live news stream, a realtor from Newtown who lived close to the family/in the neighborhood stated he had Asperger's and emotional disorders and this was according to the deceased mother.

She also stated the mother was "strict" and that this was a source of issues between the mother and son.

Statement from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on the Newtown, Connecticut, School Shootings
DECEMBER 14, 2012

Contact: (202) 401-1576 , press@ed.gov

"School shootings are always incomprehensible and horrific tragedies. But words fail to describe today's heartbreaking and savage attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School. As the father of two children in elementary school, I can barely imagine the anguish and losses suffered today by the Newtown community.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to every parent, child, teacher, staff member, and administrator at Sandy Hook and the surrounding community. And our thanks go out to every teacher, staff member, and first responder who cared for, comforted, and protected children from harm, often at risk to themselves. We will do everything in our power to assist and support the healing and recovery of Newtown."

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

Fox News TV is reporting that both Ryan Lanza and his father are both alive and talking to police. They believe Adam killed his mother at the house where they both lived, then went to the school and carried out this massacre.

No bodies were found in New Jersey.

?When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ?Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.? To this day, especially in times of ?disaster,? I remember my mother?s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers ? so many caring people in this world.? - Mr. Rogers

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

Vigils, prayers, heartfelt sympathies and love to all the families of the victims. Sadly gun control will be an issue for some time to come, but most of us know we shouldn't be selling assault and automatic weapons to the general public. Bless one and all. Children subjected to this sort of suffering is an all too common part of our history. Rest in Peace

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

Heartfelt sympathies to all affected. I cannot imagine anything worse that losing a child or someone in this way.
