Ana M. Marquez-Greene's dad is Jimmy Greene:

http://www.jimmygreene.com/jimmy-greenes-discography.html

In his short time here in Winnipeg, he simply wowed the local music community with his playing. We listened with awe and understanding as he drew us clearly and expertly into the higher realms of jazz. And the whole town came to know about his playing and his family through the local Jazz publication, DIG, that was started by Steve Kirby.

http://www.digmagazine.ca/2012/01/jimmy-greene-thriving-on-a-riff/

http://www.digmagazine.ca/2008/09/the-celestial-saxophone-of-jimmy-greene/

http://www.digmagazine.ca/2009/07/jimmy-greene-mission-statement/

He also spoke to nearly every high school jazz student in Winnipeg, in both a technical and spiritual manner. For example, in this piece which he wrote, the connection between transcribing, singing and playing is a concept Jamie Aebersold talked about decades ago; yet, Jimmy Greene articulates the concept, extends it, and teaches it far more effectively than ever heard before. He gives us hope that everyone can follow a process to learn the fine art of jazz:

http://www.digmagazine.ca/2009/01/transcription-learning-from-the-masters/

Perhaps that's one more reason why every musician-related family in this town has been crying. A nightmare for every parent, but also the loss of hope of what this child would have become growing up in a household with such musical, educational and spiritual brilliance.

Five dead, teen charged in Albuquerque shooting

(CNN) -- A teenage boy faces murder and other charges in the shooting deaths of a man, a woman and three children in a home on the outskirts of Albuquerque, New Mexico, authorities said Sunday.

Investigators were still combing over the home on the southwestern edge of the city where investigators found the victims Saturday night, said Deputy Aaron Williamson, a spokesman for the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department. It was unclear whether the teenager now in custody is related to the victims, nor would Williamson disclose whether the victims -- who included two boys and a girl -- were related.

Williamson said each victim had been shot multiple times. Several guns were found inside the home, including a "military-style" rifle he said had been used in the crime.

The teen is being charged with two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death, the sheriff's department said. He was arrested after being questioned at the sheriff's office and is likely to be arraigned on Tuesday, Williamson said.

Neither the victims' nor the suspect's identities had been released Sunday afternoon.

Re: A Very Sad Day in North America

It seems most of the recent mass shootings in the United States were by an individual who experienced a recent disappointment in the academic arena. This represents a loss of hope for their future.

Yesterday one person at the University of Central Florida called the police when he saw his roommate with a weapon. He may have saved many from injury or death. Never think that one person can not do something significant.

From University of Central Florida - where my son attends. I personally thank the roommate of Mr. Seevakumaran for calling 911:

"It appears as if Seevakumaran had a larger-scale timeline of violence planned. No individuals were named specifically, and he was acting alone, according to preliminary investigations.

'Times like today challenge us individually, as an organization, and as a university community,” said UCF President John C. Hitt. “The first test for all of us is whether we are focused on the safety of our community, and I am confident that UCF has passed that test. The safety and welfare of our students, faculty and staff, visitors, and neighbors is UCF’s highest priority. The test of compassion is also very important, and our prayers go to everyone affected by today’s incident.'"

We have posted about violence in the United States off and on since this thread was started in 2011. At one point I gave up because there is so much violence that the volume of material would fill its own forum. Statement by President Biden on Mass Shooting in Buffalo, New York

MAY 14, 2022

Tonight, we grieve for the families of ten people whose lives were senselessly taken and everyone who is suffering the physical and emotional wounds of this horrific shooting. We are grateful for the bravery of members of law enforcement and other first responders who took immediate action to try to protect and save lives. The First Lady and I are praying for the victims and their families, and hearts all across this country are with the people of Buffalo.

We still need to learn more about the motivation for today’s shooting as law enforcement does its work, but we don’t need anything else to state a clear moral truth: A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation. Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. Hate must have no safe harbor. We must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.

Curfew imposed after 3 killed, 24 wounded in Milwaukee mass shootings

May 14, 2022 11:27am Updated

By Kerry J. Byrne

Milwaukee erupted in gunfire Friday, with nine separate shootings that left three people dead and 24 wounded in the lakeside city of less than 600,000.

Three of the Friday shootings took place near Fiserv Forum, where the Bucks hosted the Celtics in an NBA playoff game.

... Seventeen people were wounded during a frantic mass shootout after the game in Milwaukee’s Water Street Bar District, a few blocks east of the arena.

“It was down here everybody had a gun, everybody had a gun,’ local resident Ron Allen told WISN 12. “You really couldn’t go nowhere. Everywhere you turned it was some type of altercation where somebody had a gun up.”

... The mass shootout came just two hours after another incident, also near Fiserv Forum, in which three people were shot during the final minutes of the game in the Deer District.

Video of the earlier incident shows panicked people screaming and running for their lives....

Mayor Lori Lightfoot enacts weekend curfew after 3 shot, 1 killed near Millennium Park 'Bean'
Chicago police said teen shot, killed Saturday night
By Tre Ward and Michelle Gallardo
Sunday, May 15, 2022 6:41PM

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced a curfew for unaccompanied minors after downtown shootings killed a teen and injured two others Saturday night.

Effective immediately, unaccompanied minors are not allowed in Millennium Park after 6:00 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday, Lightfoot said in a statement.

"We, as a City, can not allow any of our public spaces to become platforms for danger. Anyone coming into our public spaces should expect to enjoy them peacefully and must respect and exhibit basic community norms of decency. We simply will not accept anything less," Lightfoot said, in part. "I am calling on all parents, guardians, and caring adults to step up at this moment and do whatever it takes to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again and to encourage appropriate behavior when our young people gather anywhere in this great City of ours."...

...Twenty-six children and four adults were arrested in connection with the incident, Chicago police said. There were five gun arrests and seven guns recovered.

Two officers were also injured.

Police, who in recent weeks said they would be cancelling officers days off, and sending additional resources downtown, were forced to shut down streets surrounding the park.

Superintendent David Brown today said the police department's priority right now is making Millennium Park safe, but admitted that there is a possibility of displacement to other downtown locations. These large groups of young people appear to be drawn downtown on weekends, not by chance, but as a result of coordinated efforts to get them there born on social media, he said.

Texas - 14 children and 1 teacher dead in Uvalde school shooting

MAY 24, 2022
UPDATED: 5:22 PM CENTRAL

At least 14 children and one teacher were killed in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde County on Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott said. Others were also injured.

Abbott said the shooter is dead and is believed to have been killed by responding officers. The shooter acted alone, said Pete Arredondo, Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District chief of police.

Two hospitals in the area are treating those injured in the shooting. Uvalde Memorial Hospital told The Texas Tribune it had received 13 children and one adult from ambulances and buses. Two patients arrived at the hospital dead. Two children have since been transferred to San Antonio for treatment, while a third is pending transfer.

University Health in San Antonio is providing care for two patients connected to the shooting. The 66-year-old woman and the 10-year-old girl are in critical condition.

... Abbott identified the shooter as Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old Uvalde resident. The man abandoned his vehicle and entered Robb Elementary with a handgun and possibly a rifle, the governor said. The shooting started around 11:32 a.m., Arredondo said.

Uvalde is about 85 miles west of San Antonio.

Husband of one of the teachers fatally shot at Uvalde school dies from heart attack

Fort Worth Star-Telegram

FORT WORTH, Texas — The husband of one of the fourth-grade teachers killed in the Uvalde school shooting Tuesday has died, according to multiple news reports.
Irma Garcia, who was a 23-year veteran teacher at Robb Elementary School, was killed after an 18-year-old gunman entered the campus, barricaded himself in a fourth-grade classroom and fired dozens of shots — killing 19 students, Garcia and another teacher.

Garcia’s husband, Joe, reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after his wife’s death, according to Ernie Zuniga, of KABB FOX San Antonio.
Zuniga reported that the pair had been together since high school and married for 24 years.

The Garcias shared four children together and loved barbecuing, Irma Garcia wrote in her biography on the Uvalde school district’s website.

The couple leaves behind their son Cristian, who was completing Marine boot camp earlier in the year; Jose, who attends Texas State University; Lyliana, a high school student; and Alysandra, a middle school student...

Florida fifth grader threatened mass shooting: police

05/30/22 3:34 PM ET

BY ZACH SCHONFELD

A 10-year-old boy in Florida was arrested on Saturday for allegedly threatening in a text message to conduct a mass shooting, according to local police.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said the fifth grader at a Cape Coral elementary school had sent a “threatening text message,” and authorities arrested him later that day. He was charged with making a written threat to conduct a mass shooting.

The investigation came just days after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

“This student’s behavior is sickening, especially after the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno (R) said in a statement.

... Marceno’s office also posted a video of a boy who appears to be the fifth grader walking out of the sheriff’s office in handcuffs.

“Right now is not the time to act like a little delinquent,” said Marceno. “It’s not funny. This child made a fake threat, and now he’s experiencing real consequences.”
